for those wondering why the scenes are reversed: this episode is a parody of the 1983 drama "betrayal" with jeremy irons, ben kingsley and patricia hodge, from harold pinter's 1978 stage play of the same name. it's the story of jeremy's years-long affair with his best friend's wife, told from end to beginning.

I actually did not know this, always just assumed it was an artifact of 90s post-modern experimental non-linear filmmaking (which was a satisfying enough explanation for me) but this fact adds another layer of depth to that. Nice one!

When I was in high school we read Betrayal by Harold Pinter about a month before this episode came out. We came into class the day after the episode and told our English teacher about it. One of my classmates had recorded the episode and we watched it during the next class. That was pretty fun.
