Bill Russell was an excellent rebounder in an era where teams took a lot of shots, and didn't shoot all that well. Aside from his rookie season, NBA teams averaged 99.0-109.4 FGA per game, with his rookie season at 94.6. FG% in Russell's career ranged from .380 (first season) to .441 (penultimate season). After Russell's career, the NBA's FG% dipped below .440 only twice (and even then, only as low as .437), both in seasons in which the 3-point line existed, which naturally brought down total FG%. So you had an elite rebounder in an era where a single elite rebounder could produce serious scoring opportunity disparities. He was also widely regarded as an elite defender, which dovetailed nicely with elite rebounding. During Russell's career, the Celtics were 1st in the NBA Defensive Rating (points allowed per 100 possessions) in every season except 1967-68, where they were 2nd. Amazingly, they were often below average, sometimes last, in Offensive Rating (points per 100 possessions) - they just made you even worse at offense than they were. For example, in 1963-64, they were 9th of 9 in Offensive Rating at 90.1, but produced a defensive rating of 83.8, for a league-best net rating of +6.4. The Celtics were, in some sense, only the second worst offense in the NBA - the worst being "Whomever the Celtics are playing tonight."

The fifties and sixties Celtics were fantastic teams but never had the following attendance wise that the Bruins had and still have. I never understood why the last place Bruins were always sold out but the multiple year world champs had seats available. I guess Boston is a hockey town being an original six team. I still loved Cousy,Sharman,Russell,Heinson,Satch Sanders,K.C.Jones, and all the other greats that played in those days.

@@Neo5GT NBA wasn't prime time in the 50s. It had started a few years prior. Bruins were established. Prior basketball leagues failed, there wasn't a ton of interest. People talk about the greatest coming from this era, but that would be similar to saying the GOATs of the NFL were Bronco Nagurski and Don Hutson. All cities had racial tensions and it wasn't white vs black. NHL thought non-Canadians were lesser. Boston had tension, but the didn't have a Watts. Not everything is about race.

If Wilt had played from the start with the Lakers it's arguable that the two things he needed to win against the Boston Celtics would have been available? His coach in 1962 coach McGuire said that "Wilt has been simply super-human" and commented on how the Warriors lacked a consistent second scorer, a playmaker, and a second big man to take pressure off Chamberlain. In Jerry West and Elgin Baylor you had a consistent scorer twice over and a real play maker in Elgin Baylor add a peak Wilt Chamberlain and the lakers would have been practically unstoppable?
@BoosterGoldEarth6
@BoosterGoldEarth6 Жыл бұрын
I'm incline to agree with you, although I believe if Wilt was on the Syracuse nationals from his rookie year, the entire decade looks different. But that another story for another day. Would Jerry and Elgin sacrifice? Who would be the coach? Bc when Wilt showed up only he sacrifice shots and what not. Jerry and Elgin didn't change their game at all.
@blueblur2273
@blueblur2273 Жыл бұрын
@@BoosterGoldEarth6 To add Jerry recently said in Wilt's new documentary that Elgin struggled playing alongside Wilt because of how much Chamberlain liked to operate in the low post and clog the lane. All 3 guys were immensely talented but there is obviously issues with style of play. I think a better fit for that Lakers team is Russell as he doesn't get in the way of anything they do offensively and only enhances it. If the Lakers had Russell in the 60s instead of Boston then no doubt that they are the team of the 60s and probably end up with more championships.

Russell was extremely good, but he was by no means a fan favourite. There's obviously the fact he was black, and he played in the 60s, but that's certainly not all of it. Russell always had a contentious relationship with basketball fans. He was (rightly) angered by the racial abuse he received throughout his career, and as a result had very bitter feelings towards fans. He refused to smile for photos, sign autographs or talk to kids. This was understandable when you realized Boston fans had broken into his house and vandalized it. It was basically his tremendous respect for Auerbach that kept him going. Russell refused to attend his parade for his last championship, his number retirement, and his hall of fame induction. He didn't really reconcile with Boston until 1999 when he actually attended the re-retirement of his number. So the short answer is that the NBA probably didn't want Russell to represent the league, and maybe more significantly Bill Russell probably didn't want to represent the league.

Bill Russell accounce Celtic game for many many year. He and Cousey. I think Basketball have the best player announcers. They really fill you in about what going on. They even see fights better. I have this suspicion about Doug Collins, eager to see fight, although all about 'condemn' brawl on the court. He just see 'this.' He see 'that.' It pretty cool, what West do, as member of Lakers organization, but as a person, he not a 'known' quantity like Walton, Russell. Only organization person, who people feel like they know, just from watching game, Pat Riley. He the most exciting coach to watch, although if you from the Northeast, you a Celtics fan.

No the person who you're suppose to listen to is the coach. If the Showtime Lakers operated the way you're talking about then Pat Riley would have never been successful in the 80s with them as a 1st time head coach. But because they brought in to what he was selling from the start they were successful. Wilt was notoriously a hard player to coach and had he just brought in to how the coach wanted him to play(which was like Russell) the Lakers would have been successful right from the start. The irony is that when Wilt decided to actually start playing the way Kolff wanted, Kolff was gone and the Lakers had their most successful season ever and finally won a championship.

this myth that gets perpetuated only in the sports world that somehow Boston was the only city in America in the 1960s where there was racial tension is laughably hypocritical.

Well, when you have a respected, high-profile, Jackie Robinson-like sports figure who brings championships to the city almost annually. However, when he and his Black family move into a White neighborhood and the house is vandalized and trashed and he tells about it, well as all the other racist actions he sees, what do you expect the city's image would become? Especially when other Black athletes from other sports (Jim Rice; Reggie Smith; Sam Cunningham, Mike Haynes, etc.) within the same city have similar, negative experiences. As Bill Russell wrote during his playing days, "Boston, itself is a flea market of racism" and "I didn't play for Boston. I played for the Celtics."

@@JAWrightonline you're right, there was only one racist city in the entirety of america at any time. thanks for the all-encompassed insight. thank goodness no other sports figure has ever written about any other city being racist at any time otherwise we'd have to pay attention to the recent kkk meetings in ohio, or the lynching in san diego 4 years ago, or churches being burnt to the ground in the carolinas, or any of the myriad of other recent racially motivated hate crimes that perpetuate in every other city and state in this country. And while Rice said in 2008 when responding to torri hunter that he never experienced any racism at home or on the road, there are plenty of other athletes with anecdotal experiences that SHOULD make you feel free to label the entire area as racist, no matter what decade those athletes played in. I'm not going to bother debunking any other claim you attempt to make about any other athlete since your mind is already made up. but it would be interesting to find out what you think about what bill russell had to say about philly or any city in the south he had to play in. it'd be interesting to find out what you think about why the celtics were the first to integrate while the red sox were one of the last, and the reasons why both of those things are true. i'm jk, it wouldn't be interesting to hear your opinion on those things at all.
