Naw, not it. People are just too complicated for a simple matter. And then think they are right, even when it makes no sense. People are easily swayed by b.s. and it's not hard to hard to fool smooth brain people. Even tho Russell played on both sides of the ball, and they always argue about the number of rings, how can Jordan be considered the greatest, when so many more came before him. People are just too lazy for critical thinking, which is why, I avoid contact with most people. Most of them have brain damage, and don't even know it.

There are a lot of factors that play in on all of this, I seen an interview where Jerry West said MJ is the goat. When Bill Russell started that championship run there were 8 teams in the NBA. It was a lot easier to win in that era where there was a lot less competition and most of the talent was spread out on 3-4 teams. By end of his 11 championship run there was 16 teams I think but there was also the ABA and there was a lot of great players in the ABA. When the NBA and the ABS merged it became a lot harder to win championships and even harder to win 2-3 in a row. By the 80s it was considered impossible to win 3 in a row so when MJ put the NBA on lock down for 8 years everybody was amazed by his accomplishments. Not only was he the scoring champion but he led a team that didn’t have a list of all stars to 3 titles in a row took 2 years off n came back and did it again. He was also the only player in history to win the finals mvp in every finals appearance and a record 6 times.

I wouldn't say a league of 8 teams makes it "easier to win". Now - the rules made it easier to REPEAT as champion - bc you only had to play 1 or 2 playoff rounds if you were champion the year before.... I think back then the previous champion was given a 1st round bye automatically (even if you weren't as good in the regular season). BUt aside from that - having "8 teams" - which a lot of people for some reason use as an excuse to deny credit to those 60s players .... 8 Teams actually means there's MORE TALENT condensed on each of the 8 teams. That means each team is loaded with hall of famers... instead of only having 1 or 2 stars per team... back then each team had like 2 legends and 2 more Hall of famers AT LEAST. Nowadays talent is so spread out around the 30 - team NBA that you can make the FINALS - like this year's Celtics or Miami a couple years ago: and have virtually ZERO hall of famers on th team. That was hardly ever possible in the 80s or prior. It was during Jordan's era that the league became watered down. In the mid 80s, you needed like 4 hall offamers JUST TO MAKE IT through the Eastern Conference Finals!!! The Sixers, Celtics, Pistons all had 4 or 5 Hall of Famers AT LEAST. So it wasn't "Easier to win": In 1967 when Wilt won with Philly, he had to beat: 1. Oscar Robertson's team in Rd 1. 2. Then Bill Russell's celtics which had over 6 Hall of Famers. 3. Then in the Finals: 2 Hall ofFamers AT LEAST (Nate THurmond and Rick Barry.... who averaged more points in his career than Steph Curry has so far). So it wasn't "easier" to win in the 60s .... back then they had little expertise compared today regarding sports medicine, sports science, fancy shoes with cushioning and engineering. etc. I'm a coach - and have been for the past 10 years or so - I can tell immediate difference between some of my $100 shoes compared with the primitive Converse All Stars they were in the 60s: Imagine how strong you had to be to use those primitive shoes, and be over 280 lbs, but still jump over and over to grab 20 rebounds (per night!.. That's what Wilt and Russell averaged: 18 to 20 every game!!! And to block 8 shots per game (compared to today when the highest block rate is maybe 2.5 or 3 per game AT BEST). So people should respect those hall of famers more.... from the 1960s. That's the bottom line.
@wallacepemberton932
@wallacepemberton932 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrLarryLessor all that to argue math? Having a 1 out of 8 chance is greater than having a 1 out of 30. As far as the shoes, all 8 teams wore the same level of discomfort. I actually agree with most of what you said, I just think you used it to challenge the wrong statement.

@@axilmar254 What is amazing to me is people keep bringing up playoffs. In MJ's entire career he was the number one option, meaning he always took the most shots. That didn't happen with Wilt because he was asked to stop his scoring by coaches for team success. Now the higher pace argument makes Wilt even more great. Wilt was a Center, a Center has to go from baseline to baseline, 94 feet multiple times.He was 7'1 around 275 pounds. He has to fight for rebounds defensively then run down to thee other block score and back in those days men were hanging on him and fouling him then run back and forth at that pace for an average of 46 minutes a game. There is nobody that does that. Then or now. Don't get it twisted Wilt was not the tallest player in that era and there were a few 6'11 and 7'0 players so that myth about him playing against smaller player is trash.

I don't know what the heck you're talking about the freethrow line. A giant can't do how Wilt did it. Again the court is 94 feet long, when MJ did it he had to go down almost the end lets say 85 feet to run to jump 15 feet.By the way Julius did it first. Wilt could jump 15 feet from 3 paces above the top of the key. HUGE difference. As for giant, let's see some modern day giant do that, I would like to see that. Steals started getting counted in 73 74 season 3 points was 79 80 season. i remember in the 90s hearing about the greats and they were given proper respect those pre modern era players. I know i have watched a ton of classic games on the NBA channel years ago and loved them but its not like seeing a season after season. MJ got me and my friends together to watch Bulls games it was cool for a Sonics fan and a couple GS fans maybe a Lakers fan as well over and over for years. Phenomenal player. I think that is the best explanation i can come up with. Its only era not at all disrespect.

Winning 6 titles, in 8 years, versus 30 teams, is infinitely harder, and more impressive today, than winning 11 titles, in 13 years, versus 7-9 teams. Especially when you factor in things like free agency, the trade market and salary caps.
@bb1111116

Just the opposite. Fewer teams means a concentration of talent which makes it harder to win. The reason there were 8 teams in the 60s was because of the lack of money. As Tommy Heinsohn said, there were college all Americans who could not get into the NBA in the 60s because there wasn’t enough room. After Bird, Magic and MJ brought in $billions into the NBA, this resulted in a large number of additional teams. That has diluted talent.

You don't think MJ didn't get the fadaway from Wilt Chamberlain or the sheer willingness to never give in from Bill Russell or the creative game from a wonderful player like Elgin. Chamberlain was such a finesse player that players could copy many of his career skills and make them better, MJ perfected the fadaway, then who then perfected Wilts unstoppable finger roll and kareem perfected wilts Hook shot. Both Bill Russell and Wilt played in fast era's of basketball, they had world class athleticism, but the two things that make basketball harder are tiredness, when shooting and the ultimate ability to shoot while under pressure and fatigue, what you gained in entertainment you lost in points? Bill Russell was overrated quite frankly. If I'm being generous he's top ten all time based on his accomplishments but strictly as a player just counting centers there's at least 5 or 6 better players in NBA history. Wilt, Kareem, Shaq, Bill Walton when healthy, David Robinson pre injury. Olajuwon. Tim Duncan if you count him as a center. I'd take any of those guys over Bill Russell. I'd put Bill Russell slightly ahead of Patrick Ewing. People go on and on and on ad nauseum about how Russell was such an amazing team player. He was good but the truth is that he just played on far and away better teams. If Wilt had been on the Celtics they might have never lost a single game. Not really but you get my point.

I compare him to Bill Russell or Larry Bird and I remember watching Bird and the Celtics beating Jordan's team, I think it was the year before Bird retired. By then, Bird had his finger injury, had his debilitating back injury for about 7 years, and had 2 Achilles' surgeries. He was in pain even putting his jersey on but his team won with Bird not taking pain meds, and not being able to sit on the bench. Eh. Russell's overall game doesn't in any way compare to MJ's. In that era he could be an almost Dennis Rodman like talent and win rings because he had scorers on his team. That's simply impossible since the leagues merged and maybe even before that. MJ mastered literally every part of the game, at the highest level AND elevated his otherwise pretty average team. He made Pippen. No one else is even close. But Russell's ability to keep that team playing at the highest level for so many years was remarkable and almost certainly unrepeatable for a variety of reasons. He certainly set the standard.

Because the were on 10 teams in the league when Bill was playing. Easy answer once you realize that.

It seems pretty silly to consider Russel close to MJ given the eras. And baseball has always been a sport of individual skills.

It's only silly in the minds of you Michael Jordan fans. Because you people are brainwashed by the Michael Jordan loving media. But hey, if you really believe you're right, you can go on my program, and we can go over everything that you wrote.

@@theuniversegalaxynba Tim Duncan fan here but it's not fair to compare those eras. Just look at the old films and the old stats - they were playing a different game back in Russel's day. It is cool to get a response from the video maker but it's insulting to hear that I'm being brainwashed by the media. Let me at least have a stupid opinion on my own.

Ok so there are many problems in your second post. So again if you disagree you can go on my program. When it comes to both of your posts you have no idea why your takes are questionable, but if you really want to know, let's set things up, would you like to go on my program?

The difficulty in picking the goat is there are many criteria that can get used. Obviously, comparing one era to another is impossible. Championships is perhaps the best measure of a career? Given that, the best career ever is certainly Bill Russell, even though he did play in a weak era with few teams, but he still won. There are other criteria for best career and everyone can decide for themselves, but Jordan, Kareem and Lebron, in no particualar order, are 2 through 4. That is career, but not necessarily the best player. Greatest entertainer is important when we talk about professional basketball, who is easily Jordan, but I will leave that out of the discussion. But, remember pro basketball is about the entertaining the fans, and without fans there is no professional basketball. The best player to play a specific position doing what that position is expected to do is between Jordan at shootong guard and Chamberlain at center. Kobe, Magic and others are 3 on down. Best impact player for their generation is: Jordan, Chamberlain, Lebron. This is where Lebron does challenge Jordan. Most all-around skilled player is basically, the player that had essentially no weakness, and had tremendous strengths. Come on, nobody can touch Jordan! Is Bill Russell the greatest? I can't argue.

Russell played in a league with less teams, not necessarily a weak era. If you had to judge strength of eras I would put Late forties to early fifties as probably the weakest followed by the era after Wilt retired until Magic and Bird came into the league, then next I would probably put today’s era. I would put Wilt’s and Russell’s era slightly below the 80s and early 90s in being one of the toughest eras

Bill Russell was a team player. Jordan was all Jordan all the time. Jordan was lucky the teams he faced in the finals were old (Lakers) or inexperienced.
