Just keep in mind the 512 he got to durability test was given to him the one he is giving away and the other one are likely not 512gb models and he probably only paid for 1 of the 3. I just wish they would have sent him a broken one to put through durability testing vs one that could have been sent to a buyer.

@Carl Gunderson lots of reports of different rma issues all it needs is a good screen for him to test if it has fan defects or bad analog sticks or bad WiFi as have been reported it would not really affect the durability testing while at the same time not take a fully working 512gb out of circulation. Instead he wrecks the top end model which is the one in most demand. He could have just as easily performed all those tests on a 64gb model too. Except the frosted glass...

For reference the Nintendo Switch has anywhere between 291 to 380 nits brightness depending on the model. Complaining about the steam deck's 400 should be more of a criticism of hand-held gaming devices' peak brightness as whole, rather than a device specific thing.

I've had the 512 in hand for a few weeks now. It is not very bright in full sunlight. Crazy that you can play AAA titles to 60fps, and still start at 12 watts or so for the entire thing.

I get it it's for science and helps others see if they want one and which screen is best but damn, I would have at least taken care of mine and not scratched, burned, and tried to break it in half steam. Man as someone still waiting for his Deck to arrive it was painful to watch the scratch tests! Btw there will surely be some shell replacements in the future, and screen replacement (and possible upgrade) are the most likely the first to arrive, so the scratched SD have a chance to be restored to its former glory (or better)!

It's so fucking wasteful. This whole video is pointless. It's not a $1200 phone advertising drop or scratch resistance--we're well aware it's made with very basic plastic and a normal screen since Valve have been very clear about keeping cost and weight down. If you're worried about the screen in a device like this, get a cover. That's it. We don't need a video showing complete destruction of a hard-to-get device right now, especially when there's global shortages.

Unlike most modern devices that JerryRig destroys, at least the Steam Deck is actually repairable - pretty much everything he does to it here could be fixed. This one still brought a tear to my eye though.

Making the screen brighter would mean more battery consumption. While the effectiveness of the anti glare coating can be disputed, it's a passive way to increase visibility without compromising battery life.

@@StrawberryKitten Usually when you want to be able to see a screen in an area with a lot of ambient light, like outside, you need to increase your screen brightness which drains battery a lot more. Having the anti-glare helps alleviate that a bit by reducing the blinding effect that external lights have on your screen so you don't have to turn up the brightness quite as much.

My real worry is the CPU, i've seen someone hook up a desktop gpu to it and it struggles to get over 60 fps due to the cpu only being a 4 core. It's fine for 30 fps but i really would like 40 minimum.

@@97JoMiller Oh no, the Steam Deck is a complete PC on it's own. I've just seen a video of a guy who hooked a full sized GPU to the steam deck, it's impractical but the fact you can do it shows how open source valve has made the device.

Imo would depend on the adhesive of the screen protector, i know there are some that can fill scratches to give the appearance of a new screen, so one like that could possibly make the anti glare etching a mute point.

It still scratches like normal glass. Just don't go rubbing stuff on it as it acts like sand paper and would need to be cleaned off with a wet rag to get rid of the particulates that the glass has sanded off

I was thinking: Since the "upgraded" glass is etched, it might be acting like a rasp or file, and not a smooth sheet of glass. The picks might actually be losing material when rubbing up against the glass.

It is great. This video is just a dogshit take. Making the screen brighter would have killed battery life. Going with a laser etching was the best way to improve playability on a portable. It works brilliantly for most lighting conditions. Being directly under literal filming stage lights isn't a normal use case... It's a very good etching job too (not Apple nano glass level, but not dramatically far off either). Go look at people that actually give a shit about gaming tech like RetroGamesCorp for a MUCH better screen glass comparison.

The Steam Deck passing the bend test might be more important than it looks. If you need a stress reliever when you ragequit (it doesn't need to be multiplayer), the Steam Deck might also fit the bill.

My order window came due yesterday for the 256 gig version. It's been 3 months since this video came out and I got in line. This is great because everyone was telling me it would be after Christmas but instead it's 3 months. I ordered another one (256 gig), I'm in the USA.
