This was genius level hard core stuff. Jazz drumming. Biblical reference lyrics. Walls of guitar. 23 minutes of adrenaline. Jerrys Kids was the perfect band name.

Jerry’s Kids, the best to come out of that wave of Boston hc. Barely a secret, everyone kinda knows they’re the best, but you gotta spread the love. But seriously tho, they were the best. The timing, dexterity, the pure explosive energy and lyrics that told the truth about the paranoia and urgency of the early Reagan years and it’s non exclusion of nuclear war as an option to suppress the world and destroy youth culture. Not on these guy’s dime. Shout out to Jerry’s Kids.

Punk drumming. Just fast, with extra rolls. Not jazz at all.
@davidfoster59062 ай бұрын
@@The-Clockwork-Eye O.K its not jazz drumming as defined by Berkley school. I guess jazz drumming has an off beat sounding time on the snare. Some people associate jazz drumming with fast drumming like Crooper or be bop jazz. The drumming on Is This My World is still impressive. Chuck Biscuits was also a good punk drummer (NOT JAZZ!) You define jazz drumming.
@The-Clockwork-Eye2 ай бұрын
@@davidfoster5906 Just watch Buddy Rich. He defined it more than words ever could. Brian would never describe his drumming as jazz drumming. Mickey Napalm Death used to say the same about me, because I was faster than him, and he was promoted as the fastest... Which he wasn't, particularly around the kit, he just had a fast top speed... Chris Doherty once told me, after watching me play a set with Assert, in London, "that was the fastest drumming I ever saw in my life!", then he added, as if in respect, "except for our original drummer, Brian Betzger". I've had a lot of compliments after playing live, but Chris has seen a lot of fast drummers...I still take his word for it, I was on fire at that time. Thank you, Frank. (Intense Degree)

This album is excellent! And yes the drumming is insane, like Elvin Jones gone insane! There's a quote I read once that said something like "Hardcore sucks! Well, it seems all the other posts of this album have been taken down so maybe it's time to hip all you G+ers to this record. The band took its name from the Jerry Lewis muscular dystrophy kids. YES! YES! YES! THIS IS SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL! This four piece band, Rick Jones vocals and bass, Bob Cenci guitar, Chris Doherty guiar and Brian Betzger drums debuted on This Is Boston Not L.A. comp. (1982) with a different singer and one different guitarist. Their six songs were well played but only gave an occasional hint of what was to come. And what was to come is the magnificent album you're listening to now. Not sure this is for you? Just listen to the first song, all 1:44 of it. Focus in on the guitars and drums. If it doesn't completely floor you, maybe Jerry's Kids' debut album in 1983 is not for you. IMO these sheets of sound and drumming have never been equaled in hardcore. How can you possibly improve upon the musicianship on display here? It's spectacular, to say the least. When I play the original pressing for my non punk friends, their frequent response is "Holy shit!" and "They sped that up, right?" But this music is not just speed for speed's sake. This drumming is super fast, for sure, but delicate at the same time. Tremendously accomplished. And when they slow it down, as on Lost, the results are no less powerful. On a personal note, I saw them play here in New York City when Is This My World? was out. They played with the F.U.'s (another fine Boston band.) When the F.U.'s began their set, they said "Hi. We're Jerry's Kids." When Jerry's Kids played they said "Hi. We're the F.U.'s" And that was it. Ha Ha. Bet they fooled at lot of kids. Is This My World is one of the my three all time favorite hardcore records and to my ears grows greater with each passing year. One of the pinnacles in modern American music. I Don't Belong Cracks In the Wall Tear it Up Crucify Me Break the Mold Raise the Curtain Vietnam Syndrome Build Me a Bomb New World Lost No Time Is This My World?

That was the New Mexico Jerry's Kidz. A great band also. But this is Boston's version.

These guys broke up literally the day I was supposed to see them - I drove two hours only to find that they weren't coming. Thankfully it was a hardcore show, so there were four other bands playing anyway. Giant disappointment though - one of my favorite records ever.
