On my visit to the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, as I explored I sang these words of William Blake celebrating the legend of Christ visiting this area (in the years not recorded in the Bible). "And did those feet...." It was a misty morning giving the legend an extra air of plausibility.

Magnificent, as always, Jonathan (Tom's contribution surely must be a 'given' by now)! I know you don't have the time to respond to 'comments', but can I say that it's always good to see those 'shiny' black shoes on the pedalboard - unlike quite a few other very talented and skilled organists who choose/find it easier to perform in colourful/jazzy socks! Perhaps it's a generational/'aesthetical' issue for me? However, it's only through KZbin that I am aware of these things! Best wishes to you both, as ever!

Somebody went to a lot of trouble to give us all the specs of the organ! Thank you. I have mulled over several possible interpretations of the poem but am still a bit hazy. If anyone knows for certain, can you please tell me what Blake was on about? As an American fan of horse racing, I first knew the name Ripon as an English racecourse without knowing it was in Yorkshire. Later, when I heard the Crawley girls say, "I'm going into Ripon," I was astounded. In the course of Downton Abbey, the characters referred to several other place names which I knew as horse racing venues, including Pontefract, York and Catterick, where they went to a motorway instead of the racetrack. There was at least one other which doesn't come to mind.
@epincion2 жыл бұрын
In the first part of the poem Blake is referencing an ancient myth that Jesus himself visited the British Isles (Glastonbury to be specific). This is just one of a number of such visitations to other European nations that were part of the highly superstitious world of myths in medieval society. These grew because in the New Testament we hear of Jesus birth and early childhood and then nothing until he appears as an educated adult (probably in his 30's) and starts collecting disciples. Its in this unknown period of Jesus life that the medieval world put together fanciful ideas of Jesus travelling widely in Europe. The second part is an elegy to a lost supposed buccolic past (the green & pleasant lands) that Blake (a very mystic poet) feels are being swallowed by by the Industrial Revolution with its 'dark Satanic mills'. It was a time of massive social change and dislocation with England changing from a mostly rural world living by the rhythms of an ancient society to an industrial nation with new towns and cities full of factories belching smoke and surrounded by shanty towns of dispossessed poor in a sea of absolute poverty & working under terrible conditions. Parallel with the industrialisation of England went a process known as the 'clearances' whereby the landed gentry who legally owned all the land forced tenant subsistence farmers off rural land in order to build vast agricultural estates and not coincidentally to force a supply of cheap labour to the mines and factories that they also owned. When you watch Downton Abbey be aware that that gilded world of a fantastic estate was made possible by a pyramid of terrible injustice. Blake's poem was a call to arms for social justice and also for a return to 'old ways' - the latter being somewhat due to looking backward with rose tinted spectacles at a supposed golden age that really never existed as Blake imagined.

Jerusalem by Sir Hubert Parry (1848-1918)🇬🇧🏴 And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England's mountains green? And was the Holy Lamb of God On England's pleasant pastures seen? And did the Countenance Divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here Among those dark Satanic mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold: Bring me my arrows of desire: Bring me my spear: O clouds unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire.
