This week's Jerusalem Lights podcast takes a deep dive into an amazing study of Joseph's famous 'coat,' the special garment his father Jacob presented him with, sparking his brothers' jealousy. Why did Jacob not search for his precious son Joseph during the years of his absence? Jim Long and Rabbi Chaim Richman explore Torah secrets, as they ponder the garment's symbolism and examine teachings of the sages that track the garment's ancient origin and journey through the ages....ever since the Garden of Eden.

According to Artscroll Bereishis 37:3 -" A Tunic Of Fine Wool " the translation follows Rashi : a garment of fine wool . It was a long-sleeved embroidered tunic, made of Variously Colored Strips of fine wool ( Yafeh Toar ). Schottenstein Edition Interlinear CHUMASH ( Artscroll Series). Love this channel 😁 Shalom !

I really like listening to your midrash on this topic. Excellent insight on the father, Yakov, having to let the son, Yosef, suffer. I didn't know about the techelet as one of the colors on Yosef's tunic and Yakov using it as means to acknowledge Yosef later on. I do believe Yosef's and King David's story parallel the Mashiach's. Like Yosef, the Mashiach will reveal himself to us. May I ask, if the Mashiach is in Rome, why aren't we looking for proof in Rome? Additionally, could it be that we've missed Him (the spiritual blindness of the 11 brothers), and now we must go through a series of tests to prove our belief and for making teshuvah? King David came later, could it be that Mashiach will manifest himself like Yosef first, then like King David?

@jw9597 These Midrashic teachings are to be found in a multi-volume Talmudic-Midrashic encylopedia called Torah Shelemah (the Complete Torah), published in Jerusalem. My revised edition was published in 1992. The editor of this great work was Rabbi Menachem M. Kasher of blessed memory. The fly leaf describes the work in this manner: 'The sacred text of the Pentateuch, accompanied by Torah shebe'al-peh, and exhaustive collection of passages of commentary and interpretation gathered from Talmud, Midrash and other early sources, as found in the entire range of Rabbinic literature, from the earliest post-Biblical works to the Geonic period, drawn from all known volumes in print and from many rare early Yemenite and other manuscripts, with notes, references to parallel and other sources, and Maimonides comments on Talmudic passages found in his code.'

What if Joseph willingly gave up the coat to his brothers knowing how important it was and not willing to let it get into the wrong hands after he realized he was indeed going to possibly die. It would have been a valiant act of kindness and love to get it back to his father through his brothers?

Families/Parents of Hostages must be as brave as Jacob - as brave as they want the Hostages to be. It is an impossible situation, and yet they must hold on and trust Hashem.

Based on the Midrash there is some thinking that Joseph's coat was actually the covering that God gave to Adam which would have been made from a lamb or lambs, the first to be sacrificed. "Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them." Genesis 3:21

What came to mind "𝗰𝗼𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘀 " so a coat of many colors might depict many nations or peoples. tribes. note Joseph was accused by the Pharaoh's wife as she tore his coat when he denied her. Gen 39:12 oh you said that after I commented.

The clothing Yosef was wearing when Potiphar's wife (not Pharaoh's wife) grabbed him was not the "cloak of many colors." The many colored cloak was torn off of Yosef by 10 of his brothers and dipped in goats blood before it being presented to Yaakov Avinu.

Many scriptures , many prophecies definitely predict the re-unification of the 12 tribes of Israel ! Israel's complexion is different shades and colors. Artscroll quotes Rashi as writing" a long-sleeved embroidered tunic , made of Variously Colored stripes of fine wool ". A footnote by Rashi . After the quote it's written ( Yafeh Toar). Shalom .

Nimrod could not userp what legally belongs to another. Not even if he tried to do so by doing mitzvahs or dressing up like the heir. Israel is the legal heir so when he puts on righteousness it is his inheritance. Esav had the potential to be an heir but legally transferred it to his brother.

2 For Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the chief ruler; but the birthright was Joseph’s The record of Judah is the Bible. The record of Joseph is the Book of Mormon. 1 Chronicles 5:2 5 Wherefore, Joseph truly saw our day. And he obtained a promise of the Lord, that out of the fruit of his loins the Lord God would raise up a righteous branch unto the house of Israel; not the Messiah, but a branch which was to be broken off, nevertheless, to be remembered in the covenants of the Lord that the Messiah should be made manifest unto them in the latter days, in the spirit of power, unto the bringing of them out of darkness unto light-yea, out of hidden darkness and out of captivity unto freedom. 6 For Joseph truly testified, saying: A seer shall the Lord my God raise up, who shall be a choice seer unto the fruit of my loins. 7 Yea, Joseph truly said: Thus saith the Lord unto me: A choice seer will I raise up out of the fruit of thy loins; and he shall be esteemed highly among the fruit of thy loins. And unto him will I give commandment that he shall do a work for the fruit of thy loins, his brethren, which shall be of great worth unto them, even to the bringing of them to the knowledge of the covenants which I have made with thy fathers. 8 And I will give unto him a commandment that he shall do none other work, save the work which I shall command him. And I will make him great in mine eyes; for he shall do my work. 9 And he shall be great like unto Moses, whom I have said I would raise up unto you, to deliver my people, O house of Israel. 10 And Moses will I raise up, to deliver thy people out of the land of Egypt. 11 But a seer will I raise up out of the fruit of thy loins; and unto him will I give power to bring forth my word unto the seed of thy loins-and not to the bringing forth my word only, saith the Lord, but to the convincing them of my word, which shall have already gone forth among them. 12 Wherefore, the fruit of thy loins shall write; and the fruit of the loins of Judah shall write; and that which shall be written by the fruit of thy loins, and also that which shall be written by the fruit of the loins of Judah, shall grow together, unto the confounding of false doctrines and laying down of contentions, and establishing peace among the fruit of thy loins, and bringing them to the knowledge of their fathers in the latter days, and also to the knowledge of my covenants, saith the Lord. 13 And out of weakness he shall be made strong, in that day when my work shall commence among all my people, unto the restoring thee, O house of Israel, saith the Lord. 14 And thus prophesied Joseph, saying: Behold, that seer will the Lord bless; and they that seek to destroy him shall be confounded; for this promise, which I have obtained of the Lord, of the fruit of my loins, shall be fulfilled. Behold, I am sure of the fulfilling of this promise; 15 And his name shall be called after me; and it shall be after the name of his father. And he shall be like unto me; for the thing, which the Lord shall bring forth by his hand, by the power of the Lord shall bring my people unto salvation. 16 Yea, thus prophesied Joseph: I am sure of this thing, even as I am sure of the promise of Moses; for the Lord hath said unto me, I will preserve thy seed forever. 17 And the Lord hath said: I will raise up a Moses; and I will give power unto him in a rod; and I will give judgment unto him in writing. Yet I will not loose his tongue, that he shall speak much, for I will not make him mighty in speaking. But I will write unto him my law, by the finger of mine own hand; and I will make a spokesman for him. 18 And the Lord said unto me also: I will raise up unto the fruit of thy loins; and I will make for him a spokesman. And I, behold, I will give unto him that he shall write the writing of the fruit of thy loins, unto the fruit of thy loins; and the spokesman of thy loins shall declare it. 19 And the words which he shall write shall be the words which are expedient in my wisdom should go forth unto the fruit of thy loins. And it shall be as if the fruit of thy loins had cried unto them from the dust; for I know their faith. 20 And they shall cry from the dust; yea, even repentance unto their brethren, even after many generations have gone by them. And it shall come to pass that their cry shall go, even according to the simpleness of their words. 21 Because of their faith their words shall proceed forth out of my mouth unto their brethren who are the fruit of thy loins; and the weakness of their words will I make strong in their faith, unto the remembering of my covenant which I made unto thy fathers. 2 Nephi 3 Book of Mormon 600 BC
