I used Jesco's methods for setting up my listening position and my speaker placement in my brand new garden studio. It worked perfectly, then I treated the room well and finished with Arc 4. I cannot tell you how pleased I am with my mixing room. I can't recommend Acoustics Insider enough! 😎

Just to chime in and clarify something, nulls would be at 1/4 wavelength with peaks at 1/2 wavelength when talking about the width of the room at around 40:15. Have to say, Jesco is a great help to lots of home studio producers who are wrestling with acoustic issues, kudos. Bottom line is measure, change, measure, rinse and repeat. Lol at the 'F' word!

Great episode. In all my 5 home recording studios I’ve setup in the last 25 years ( since I was 15 ). I agree 1000 percent with all of this. I’ve debated online many times with newbies who regurgitate B.S. rule of thumbs about flatness and speaking placement without knowing much depth on the subject.

the guy nails it at 21:20 an 56:12 d 23:20 couldn't agree more, what ever you have you'll have to learn that system and adapt to have your mixes translate properly, stop chasing perfection, and analyze your system from a translation perspective if that's what you're aiming for. I treated the room to get it in a ball park and am using ' Mastering digital room correction - you tube video '' minimum phase inversion filter from Mr. Serko (obsessive compulsive audiophile YT channel) created in REW and it's a bliss. I have Adam audio A7V' s.

Amazing interview as always! I remember getting a comment from a friend saying, 'so when are you going to make music?' After a year of building the studio... That hit me hard and I wrapped up all the rabbit holes I was going down and finished and got on with it. It's hard when you want everything to be the best it can be... and playing with two variables that make that an impossible task... Budget and perfect doesn't exist. I think we just have to do our best and move on knowing we did that. And like was mentioned, upgrade as we get better. I know for myself now I really value the upgrades and can actually hear the difference because of having the time in the 'not perfect' room making and mixing. It's one heck of a journey!

So interesting guys and it had me grinning from ear to ear,as I was fully engaged the whole time😄. This is right up my street and I have gone down the exact same rabbit hole and realised that once you get to a certain point where things translate pretty decently just get on and make music!! I say that whilst looking at new gear😂 and not making music!! The real gem for me was about choosing the sub from the same manufacturer as speakers, which now seems so obvious so kh750 here I come👍🏾. Thanks guys.

Like with a lot of things in life, there is the one extreme of “nah it’ll be fine” and the other of “OMG! I can still here that null at 100Hz! My room’s not perfectly flat!”

Great timing for this vid!!! Am literally in the midst of ripping the studio apart and rebuilding to treat and improve positioning. Ripped away most of the foam and will be replacing with a to of GIK. Re-oriented the room (stupidly was positioned along the narrow with to maximise equipment access - ignorant that it was bad for acoustics! Swapped out the speaker stands (on option 3 now and option 4 with DHL arriving next week!). On my 4th desk option to optimise ergonomics and minimise the reflection surface and allow the listening position to be improved (speaker placement) Changed the screens and stands reduce reflection and narrow the speaker placement width. Upgraded the monitors to slightly larger near fields Adding the GLM gizmo to manage the speakers (you did not mention the G brand, they do a lot in this space and just announced a new controller that extends the control to headphones too). Finally now and that’s the hardest part…. Thinning out the equipment in the room so that there is less of it. Debating whether to swap the single large sub for a pair of slightly smaller ones. Should be all done on 2 or 3 weeks! So thanks so much for the vid, gave me a lot ideas, helped confirm things I’d already learnt along the way and also helped me understand WHY some of these things matter. But in all honesty I can’t wait until I’m out of this rabbit hole and can forget about it and move back to just making music ha ha.

The thing to know is that many successful artists and producers became successful with poor acoustic environments and making poor acoustic decisions in order to feel better about their space aesthetically .. They just got on with things, it was their focus .

@@natdenchfield8061 very true. Could not agree more. But if you’re building your ‘dream’ home studio because you enjoy the process then it is good to learn and grow. None of it is essential I quite agree. But like any hobbies these are many corners to explore and fill in. Pub intended. Also just because you don’t need something as a must have to achieve a goal, does not mean that that if you can you shouldn’t. It is all about choices and priorities. For me it is same type of hobby as restoring classic cars or woodworking. If I was doing it purely as an ‘investment’ I’d not bother at all. Waste of money as far better returns putting the cash elsewhere. Fk all money in music these days for majority. 🤣

When starting from scratch with treatment if you were going to fill your room with 10-16 panels what thickness of trap would you recommend - 5cm? 10cm? 15cm or 20cm? Most rooms I see on youtube and studio pictures don't tend to have particularly thick panels - maybe 5cm or 10cm max.

Great episode! Did I understand correctly that my ears should never be in the middle between the acoustic cloud in the ceiling and the floor?
@WorkingAudioTools3 ай бұрын
Depends on the room. The middle of the room is a pressure point so you just have to take some consideration and experiment
@andreasedenekendahl17703 ай бұрын
@@WorkingAudioTools so as long as the listening position is below or above the middle it should be kind of better?

Measure it and find out
@natdenchfield80613 ай бұрын
Not the cloud, but in the centre bwtween any two solid boundaries. That's where the dip of the strongest mode of that distance will occur. Between ceiling and floor is more critical when you have about an 8ft high (2.44 m) or lower because it's harder to treat either (floor treatment would get in the way of walking .. ceiling treatment can end up too low). If your ceiling is heigh than that, unless you like to sit on a high pedestal, it then won't be an issue anyway.
