Franco films receive a lot of criticism, but I enjoy his films for what they are, not exactly a revenge film but satisfied by the ending. A review on the fly works for me and liked your review of it. Rob reviewed Solange movie this week and you doing an exploitation review at the same time is wild and like to hear both of your takes on opposing sides of the aisle! Can't wait for your next review!!!

That was a good video. You seem to have the formula. Your residence makes for a vivid colorful set. You look so at home on that comfortable couch with those timeless funky pillows. You could have spent hours on that, and not seriously improved on it. You are a natural one take performer. I could go on about De Sade, but I won't. Just to say, he was a stone atheist, and the lewd behavior would not be done by a demonic cult but by the local monks. The business retired Franco, but he kept going. He would soon find Lina Romey, many years his junior. He probably died of grief shortly after her passing. RIP

Is this your first Jess Franco film? Man, now there is an interesting guy. Not all of his movies are great or even good, but he's pretty good at working through his own obsessions through low-budget exploitation cinema. You could probably psychoanalze him pretty well from his movies. But yeah, the soundtracks from his films are often great. He was a jazz musician himself and a lot of his 60s and early 70s movies have great music. I have the Vampyros Lesbos CD somewhere... He often does his best work with women who are his muses, the most notable being Soledad Miranda and Lina Romay. A thoughtful review, and I didn't mind it being unscripted. I often find myself with sort of conflicted thoughts when watching old exploitation movies and Franco films. Clearly the attitudes my be hopelessly sexist and seems to be exploiting violence against women, but you can tell Franco is often in love with his female characters and is very sympathetic to them and is always interested in their points of view. Another coming of age sexploitation film where the woman is more on board with the rites of passage is "I Am a Nymphomaniac" starring Sandra Julien.

Nice to hear you review a Jess Franco movie. I think he has about 200 movies that he directed in his career(most of them bad but I like the ones that are bad but entertaining). Eugenie is one of his better ones. I liked Venus In Furs, The Awful Dr. Orlof, and Bloody Moon(all great in a bad way). Supposedly he was a very talented jazz musician as well so his music should be on par.

Very thoughtful review and I love the female perspective you gave this one. Yeah, the whole young girl thing is pretty uncomfortable (as I think it’s meant to be - discovering sex usually is) and I like the “rites of passage” angle you give this. I streamed this movie about six months ago, so thanks for refreshing my memory. Franco made a few De Sade type films and Justine, while not quite as graphic as Eugenie, is still graphic enough considering the title character was played by Romina Power (daughter of Tyrone Power), who was all of 16. She was not right for the role and Franco was the first to say so. Franco made a Eugenie movie with Soledad Miranda, who was more age appropriate, that I’m dying to see. You mentioned Bruno Nicolai’s score. The scores in Franco’s films are usually awesome and Bruno Nicolai is one of my favorite Italian composers. His score in Franco’s A VIRGIN AMONG THE LIVING DEAD/CHRISTINA, PRINCESS OF EROTICISM almost left me in tears at the end it’s so moving - and that doesn’t happen often.
@KatieoftheNight6 ай бұрын
I've seen Justine pop up here and there but haven't seen it yet. Shame the casting wasn't the best choice but I'm sure I'll check it out at some point. You've intrigued me with the other scores you recommended!

I'm not sure anyone's read DeSade, dear, I think we're all just going off his plot summaries. I tried in my youth, but it's too much. A lot of it is simply cultural change in fiction style, but also he does not recognize the same barriers we do, and as someone from another time entirely, combines modern "harmless perversions" like bdsm and promiscuity with assaults on children, and other things that most modern readers do not wish to be titillated by. Long comment just to say, never apologize for not reading DeSade.

Truly one has to scratch one's head at the movie industry. Here is a man with no talent at all who made tons of films. How can that be? Some of us may have a few of his dvds in our collection but surely such movies could not have been a hit when they were made. In any case your next Franco film should be Female Vampire. Is it good? Noooooo. But it's interesting, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

Franco was chosen by Orson Welles as a second unit director for CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT because Welles was so impressed with one of Franco’s early noir films. Franco’s thing was starting in the late sixties, he made films at such a rapid pace it was literally impossible to keep a consistent quality. The fact that Franco made so many films and a good amount of them show true moments of beauty (in my opinion) would indicate talent. Can one argue with him making films at such a fast pace? Sure. But he had talent.
@halwasserman79057 ай бұрын
@@metaldams78 You may be the first person to describe any of Franco's films as noir. That is a new one to me. I am aware of his work on Chimes at Midnight. I have only seen a few clips of that one. The impression I have is it is not ranked with Welles' best. Anyway who knows what went on in the mind of Orson Welles? He was a great genius of course but surely most of the difficulties he experienced were self inflicted. How else do we explain that most other filmmakers were able to get their films made without any of the troubles he faced?
@metaldams787 ай бұрын
@@halwasserman7905 The two noir films - early ones, are DEATH WHISTLES THE BLUES and RIFIFI IN THE CITY. Franco started out as a more conventional filmmaker …and yeah, there’s no doubt Welles was a better director than producer.
