Jesse Glover Sticking Hands
Jesse Glover showcases the art of sticking hands and continuous movement that he learned with Bruce Lee.
Jesse Raymond Glover was Bruce Lee's first student and first assistant instructor in the United States. He met Lee in 1959 at Edison High School and taught Lee judo.
Jesse Glover started a Gungfu class, Leroy Garcia and James DeMile came and assisted him, which was the first ever independent Jun Fan arts related class. Jesse Glover was the first authorized martial arts instructor to be trained by Bruce Lee. He has developed his own method which he calls Non-Classical GungFu.
Filmed with the generous help of Seyfi Shevket and Spirit Wing Chun. Watch and Learn.

With all due respect to all of you, there seems to be alot of back and forth on credibility, ability and sincerity. In as far as my senior it seems that Mr. Glover in his final days was trying his best to show what Bruce had given him as a gift of self knowledge and to show not how devastating or awesome he was but how devastating and awesome the martial arts was to him. He was one of the few who was fortunate to train with Bruce and see first hand his mindset and how that influenced not just him but everyone to be the best they could be and use the martial arts as their vehicle. RIP senior, you will be missed.

It's important to remember that there were 3 distinct periods of Lee's marital arts development. Seattle student James DeMile once told Dan Inosanto that one would never know that the students from the Seattle/Oakland/L.A. Chinatown periods were taught by the same man. Despite the ongoing changes in Lee's art, the quality of his students was a testament to his genius. Jesse Glover, James DeMile, Ed Hart, Dan Inosanto, Dan Lee, Ted Wong, Bob Bremer, Larry Hartsell, Steve Golden, Jerry Poteet, Leo Fong, and several other students continued to teach Lee's art into their Golden Years. This process contradicts the notion that Lee left behind "a mess."

Yes, at the time that video was recorded, Jesse had late stage cancer that had metastasized through his bones to his spine and hips and neck and shoulders, and he adapted and distilled his own training to accommodate and circumvent or accommodate his weaknesses to the end of his life. We all work with what we have, and no style or system can do that for us. As for kicks, Bruce himself, apart from low kicks for destabilization of an opponent and entry, only got into kicks because they are dramatic and good for film. Bruce knew that the shortest neural pathway is through the fists. Kicks were accoutrement for Bruce, who was super-fast to begin with, and he was honest about that to the street fighters he first trained with in Seattle.

@@wolfgangrain4486 thanks for the information. I knew Jesse was unwell but wasn’t aware to what extent it had manifested. His speed and power is very impressive. I’m pretty educated on Bruce, his kicks in the movies were mostly movie stuff. But he had the mobility and power to execute kicks from any levels. His snap front kick, side kicks and low stop kick to the knee are amazing. The best film showing his kicking ability is game of death in my opinion.

@philosopher0076
@philosopher0076 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Izzo Wing Chun (Dominic)..Lee improved things. Wing Chun was left in the dust by Lee because it was too limited and too slow. He was right...and I don't care what lineage of Wing Chun or " who's " Wing Chun you want to bring up...they all have the same core principles and in fighting are too slow and not practical for many reasons. For your information, Jesse didn't do much Chi Sao...only when people wanted to learn some at seminars etc. He moved away from it because it was a waste of his time...as it was a waste of Lee's time when Lee realized it was a poor way to approach fighting. As Dan Inosanto stated, " He moved beyond Wing Chun because he saw how limited it was in different ranges and also that due to the use of two hands all the time and the center line approach, very impractical in combat." Inosanto then stated in video interview that Lee said, " Wing Chun might be useful if you are in a fight in a confined area, a bathroom." Lee went to the fastest combat art there is to find answers...foil fencing, of which his older brother Peter was a champion competitor of in Hong Kong. Lee also studied it not only under his brother's tutelage but under two instructors in Seattle in his college years. He was a researcher like no other in martial arts. He ripped apart and analyzed everything he looked at with a surgeon's eye. How many fencing books and manuals do you think Lee had in his home library with his own notes written in the margins of almost every page of every fencing book? Do you know how many fencing books? 68. Again... 68. And he had 2,232 other books on other martial arts and philosophy...and boxing and fitness. He read ALL of them..and notated in ALL of them. His wife has stated that he read many of them two and three times. He also took from boxing. His Jeet Kune Do was all about WINNING a fight. That's it, plain and simple. That is ALL Lee wanted to get out of his Art was one thing, to win in an altercation...rapidly, explosively and decisively. Boxing gave him blind side fighting to 90 degrees and with curved blows pounding to the back of the head. Wing Chun does not have that. It has only at most a 45 degree shift out angle when hands are engaged. Boxing and fencing gave many other things WC does not have...a few being broken rhythm and beats in fractions, plus feints, fading out of position, fakes, false attacks and much much more. And no combat art has as excellent evasive and nimble and adaptable, alive, mobile footwork as does the art of boxing. This was not lost on Lee at all. He watched matches on TV all the time. He went to boxing matches and he had 300 8 mm. boxing films of pro matches in his home collection with all the greats of boxing from 1910 up to 1969. He watched them endlessly, studying every nuance. Fencing has the FASTEST, most EFFICIENT footwork and attack of all martial arts. Lee realized and applied that and other elements and principles of it to his JKD. Realize Jesse did JKD. He left Chi Sao behind 50 years ago. What you see in this video is a 74 year old man riddled with cancer and in agony, barely able to walk on an also diseased leg... ( a year and half from his death ) playing hands in Chi Sao....something he didn't practice anymore since decades. What he practiced was efficient and direct....JKD is that. So don't criticize the man as I am pretty sure, after watching your videos, that a 60 year old Jesse Glover could have crushed you in a spar or real fight and turned your skin inside out and hung it on a coatrack in 10 seconds. Believe me sir. And I'm not just blowing smoke, being a testosterone fool and trying to insult you. I'm just telling it as I see it. I truly do not think you have ever encountered a real JKD practicioner. I mean a REAL JKD practicioner who actually studies Lee's authentic Art and philosophy of Jeet Kune Do. Anyhow, just for a brief lesson on WHAT JKD really is...here is a link with a little talk/interview with Scotsman Tommy Carruthers. He studied under Taky Kimura, Ted Wong, Jesse Glover and Bob Bremer. All of them top students of Lee. Listen to his explanation of what JKD is all about...and what it's NOT. [ Wing Chun, other Kung Fu styles, Karate, Muay Thai, TKD, Judo, etc. ] The Scottish accent might be tough to understand, but bear with it and take a hard listen. And Mr. Izzo...Lee left no mess. If anything, he tidied up the classical mess and streamlined combat to an essence of simplicity that cannot be found to such a degree in any other empty hand combat art. Good evening. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooiWYqmqrbmZaLs

@wolfgangrain1459
@wolfgangrain1459 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, Jesse started his own school with Bruce's blessing, including calling his method "Non-classical gung fu." It's easy for a "new" biographer who never knew any of the Seattle guys to inject controversy or conspiracy where there was none. It's the only way to sell garbage these days. You should be ashamed of yourself, accusing one of Bruce's closest friends and best students of backstabbing, when you know nothing of which you speak. Such opinions are easy when you're ignorant.

WOLFGANG RAIN I think I’ll take the word of a published author who believes in research over you, and unknown random poster on social media. @wolfgangrain1459
@wolfgangrain1459 6 жыл бұрын
Having spent over 40 years with Glover (also a published author and Bruce's first student and assistant); knowing Bruce's wife, Linda, and John Little who is probably the most prolific of Bruce Lee's many biographers, I can assure you I am not a "random poster." Beyond that, Jesse never had a commercial school teaching non-classical and never intended to. His group was always small. He only split from Bruce because Bruce needed to dumb down his teaching, add belts and ranks, in order to pursue a commercial school, and that was fine with Bruce as long as Jesse didn't call his method "Jun Fan" or "Jeet Kune Do." Jesse asked Bruce if "Non-classical gung fu" was ok, and Bruce said that was great. Non-classical method is not a rival to JKD, never was, never will be. But if you want to believe an uninvolved writer who was never there when Bruce lived in Seattle and never knew him, Jesse, Ed Hart, Leroy Garcia, Jim DeMile... as they say, there's a sucker born every minute, my friend. All the best.

Jesse NEVER betrayed Bruce and Jesse's school was NOT a rival school of Bruce's or Taky Kimura's. Read the letter from Bruce to Taky as proof. -I reckon Guro Inosanto isn't even aware of your disrespectful false comments about Jesse.
