Many people in other states said Jessie Helm's was our punishment here in NC for eating coleslaw on BBQ sandwiches. I don't know about that. I always liked coleslaw on my pork bbq.

Jessie was a controversial person. He did have a child with a black woman, and it was kept quiet. After his death, the daughter was interviewed by Oprah. As hard as Oprah tried, she was not able to succeed in trying to have his daughter speak ill of him. The daughter said she knew who her father was, he acknowledged her, financially supported her, and she had a relationship with her father. Despite his faults, as well all have, he did the right thing.
