If you thought the gas was bad alone, consider... 1.The Canadians were in their first big operation, 2.were poorly led, 3.had a communication breakdown, 4.used the ineffective Ross rifle, and STILL held the line against the overwhelmingly superior German forces. Funnily enough Arthur Currie lead a division at that battle and later lead the Canadians as a whole.( He lost contact with both his flanks and had to ask a British commander for help. He traveled on foot and was denied.)

Wow. Canada isn't forgotten...and the game shows the Battle for Neuve Chapelle and Second Ypres. If it shows Passchendaele and/or Vimy Ridge, this game will have officially surpassed any other with regards to historical accuracy.

@LauchlinM. 10 жыл бұрын
Daf lastname By nothing militarily, you of course don't mean thousands of Canadians laying down their lives in the following: the Battle of Britain (amongst the legendary 'Few'), the Battle of Hong Kong, the Battle of Dieppe, the Italian Campaign, D Day via Juno Beach (and the only Allied troops to reach their objectives until they were stopped by the 12th SS Hitlerjugend Panzer Division under Kurt 'Panzer' Meyer), several operations during the Normandy Breakout, the Liberation of the Netherlands and having fought the Battle of the Atlantic from the beginning to the end. Also, Mexico did not contribute until late in the war like the rest of the Americas. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_history_of_Canada_during_World_War_II en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_history_of_Mexico#World_War_II And that's if you don't count Newfoundland troops among Canadian troops for *both wars*. Sincerely, a patriotic amateur Canadian historian. PS Sorry for the semi-rant.

I keep wondering why so few games do the first world war. The only reason I can really come up with is that there weren't any genuinely good or absolutely evil sides in that war.
@ZogDaMegnivizint
@ZogDaMegnivizint 10 жыл бұрын
The general strategies employed during that war wouldn't have made very compelling Triple-A game-play, in an industry that has been dominated by FPS games with heroic lone-wolf protagonists for three generations. Infantry in WWI were literally cannon fodder, the "lone-wolf" was the one lucky bastard who was stabbed to death in the enemy trench rather than cut down by machine-gun fire in no man's land. Not much action-hero potential in that. Most games about WWI are flight games or very back-endy strategy games, which have limited appeal. Couple that with the insatiable cultural appetite for stories about WWII, and you can see why the Great War gets overshadowed.
@bleeters5984
@bleeters5984 10 жыл бұрын
ZogDaMegnivizint Still, it's something that media in general has just side stepped and not used as source material all that much, especially compared to the tidal wave of attention the second world war has recieved over the years from pretty much any kind of fiction you can think of. And yes, I imagine the first world war being a horrific bloodbath as part of an empirial dickwaving contest with no real 'good' or 'bad' sides is probably part of that.
@bwcmakro

Well, you can hardly make an interesting game about sitting in a goddamn trench for months. There is a shooter game "Verdun", it's, I believe, in early access on steam and is... Adequate. Not amazing, but not too bad either, kinda feels like a more arcadey version of Red Orchestra 2. In WW1. The thing is, it feels like an okay WW2 shooter with WW1 guns. There isn't much game-wise you can do, that'd be interesting and fit WW1 setting. WW2 games basically got everything a WW1 game would have, but on a larger scale and with more variety in soldier equipment.

People always talk about sitting in trenches but that's pretty narrow minded since it doesn't have to be set at the western front during the status quo, the eastern front was brutal to say the least and in 1918 the allied forces were starting to push into Germany before the end of the war.

What do they teach u Americans about WW1? Jesse is a history guy and he didn't know stuff we learn in grades 8-12 here in Canada lol. We learned about all those stuff even the little things like the urine masks, american, Canadian, and all the others involvement in the wars.
@LordDragox412
@LordDragox412 10 жыл бұрын
Well, nobody teaches things like these too deep in regular school. If you want to learn history, you study it at university :P Stuff they teach in schools is forgotten in a matter of year or two if it's not futher needed. I remember about urine masks from chemistry lessons, where it was mentioned as a "fun" fact :P People just don't care about history unless it's their personal interest. So it's not forced into young heads like it used to be back in the day. I feel like I've pretty much wasted all those years I invested in school, as I don't remember anything or need anything from that, and I only remember "fun" facts xD Public schools don't teach, private schools also don't teach, they just require knowledge. Schools are just... boring, and that's the problem. Learning should be fun. Whenever I had a cool teacher, it motivated me to get additional knowledge from that subject, and stuff stayed in my head. Jesse's brain is just a little bit rusty, so I'm sure he knew things like this, but simply forgot them over time as he's not a teacher anymore. No matter if you have a master degree in something, if you don't need to actively use your knowledge, just like in Jesse's example, you'll forget small things over time. Maybe. I don't know. I've a brain injury that trashed my short-term memory so it could be just me not remembering anything ;] I have sticky notes that remind me about other sticky notes, and I forget about them. Totally. They're right next to me, but somehow I'm just ignoring them all like they're supposed to be there. I recently had some on my monitor too, that reminded me to look at the sticky notes wall but I had no idea what all those sticky notes were trying to tell me and I just threw them all away. But my long-term memory is quite nice, and after few weeks I remember things a little bit and they confuse the hell out of me. I even recently bought new sticky notes and I forgot about them for two weeks and I later went to buy new sticky notes and found out I already had some. And then I've never really used them because I forgot about them again, even through they were sitting on my desk. Nah, not really. I'm just bored and I'm writing random stuff. I should go to sleep, I think. I'm weird. :D

vtc193 Exactly, although as someone who enjoys history in general I feel it's a shame. The way the American education system works, you go and you learn something in a social studies class and then you learn it again the next year and the year after that, always in very slightly more detail. And you know which subjects are going to be focused on the most. At least, that's my experience with it. Might be different for other people. Anyway, I just wish that I felt like I was actually learning something new every year instead of having to go read up on the subjects in my free time to actually learn. What made me particularly sad is that I recall being in a history class and being the only one who even knew who Archduke Franz Ferdinand even was... near the end of my time in high school. I get that history's not for everyone, but that's just sad.
@TheGhostCakes
@TheGhostCakes 10 жыл бұрын
Depends on what level of course you take, Because WW1 was one of America's less involved wars where we joined at the dead end of it, You learn about roughly 1-3 weeks worth of Causes, Weapons of war, Russia, The Chain of events, M.A.I.N theory, Effects on all sides, and a small bit about psyche and trench warfare.

In Canada we learned about the urine masks because the battle of Ypres (site of the first chlorine gas attack) was one of the most important Canadian battles, probably second only to Vimy ridge. I guess other battles like Neuve Chapelle, Passchendaele and Battle of the Somme were big deals to, especially if you're from Newfoundland (wasn't apart of Canada yet) because of the 90% casualty rate of St. John's road. Kind of rambling now, anyway the point is that although Ypres was a major battle and something Canadians were proud of because a lot of soldiers sacrificed themselves by staying in the gas to fend of the advancing Germans it probably wasn't a big deal for other nations, especially ones that weren't in the commonwealth. I'm sure Jesse knows about battles we never studied, although it is true that Canadians do learn a lot more about The Great War in high school compared to American public schools. Sorry if this wall of text was not concise and probably riddled with grammar mistakes.

***** Spoilers- Well tbh I only saw the ending so I'm not 100% sure, but I do know this. Emile was able to bring Carl home, but Carl almost died, but Anna saved him. IDK about lucky Freddie but I'm sure he's still alive. Unfortunately, Emile accidentally killed one of his officials. Then he was put in jail and was sentenced to be executed (you know, like strapped to a pole and getting shot). So they showed his daughter getting a letter from him and him reciting it while showing a cinematic of him being escorted out of prison and being tied onto a pole. Then you hear a gunshot when the letter ends.

people forget that the Canadians actually did allot in both world wars. like the 5th Canadian armored, which fought in Italy, being a part of the breakout at cassino or the 3rd Canadian infantry that took Juno beach in ww2. the 3rd and 4th infantry and the 5th armored also fought at the battle of Somme, which was one of the bloodiest single battles of the war. we should commemorate and respect our Canadian brothers a little more and not try to steal their glory like we did in France when the 6th armored was about to liberate Paris.

the thing that killed the most wasn't the gas , the bombs , shells or the guns it was the mud . more soliders droned in the mud then anything else. also to give a idea about the amount of shells , bombs and bullets fired . farmer in france still die today due to unexploded shells or mines and in some area if you can just find scattered bullets laying around from ww1

Canada sacrificed very much during the battles of Ypres and Passchendaele.... A salute to the iron willed men who withstood the gas attacks from the German forces.

something i find confusing about this game is its about war, yet there is no blood or gore or anything really that shows the horrors of war. and apearently you cant use a gun for some reason

It's better than the Call of Duty way of showing the horror of war by putting it in our face none stop until we grow indifferent to it.

WWII is always the one mentioned. But I don't blame them. WWI has a lot of WTF moments. Like charging at the machine gun because they say it was "Honorable" or something *Facepalm. Or the calvary charge. There's just a lot.

This game is inaccurate. First of all they didn't have gas pipes, they had gas shells. 2nd of all you can't just simply walk to Ypres, it would have taken ages

He said he'd force his students to play this game if he were still a teacher but it sounds like Jesse would have learned more than a thing or two about the Second World War if he didn't just flick through the historical entries the game gives you.

No it was college watch the podcast :) he mentions it multiple times. I assume he's acting at some points or he just doesn't know the little things like the pee on the cloth. He probably just knows the main overview of everything.

Gabriel Hasenoehrl When and where does he mention teaching college history? He has some high school teaching award and high school teachers often teach AP courses but they aren't in depth at all.
@mikelikegaming

Gabriel Hasenoehrl He mentions constantly that he was a high school teacher and he has a award for teaching high school students. I have never heard him mention teaching college students or classes. A masters degree means he has an in-depth knowledge of a tiny sliver of history and I'm willing to bet it wasn't anything to do with the First World War.
