Learning weapons has many benefits, including strengthening of the hands and arms. A beginner uses a sai as a held, foreign object. At an advanced level, it is about using an object as an extension of your own body - as part of your body. When you understand this, any object can become a weapon, and everything you touch becomes a different experience - even a fork. The elementary understanding of karate is to learn to defend, the advanced understanding is how to live.

We also have something like this in Malaysia. It’s known as tekpi. More than a weapon, it was also important as a Hindu-Buddhist symbol. How this weapon came to existence in Southeast Asia is totally unknown. It may possibly came from Indonesia or India. Tekpi is made of iron or steel, the basic form of the weapon is that of a sharp and pointed, dagger-shaped metal truncheon, with two curved prongs projecting from the handle. The prongs extend from the hilt and are useful for grabbing away an opponent's weapon. This kind of weapon is practiced in Seni Silat Kuntau Tekpi whereby this martial art is heavily emphasise on the use tekpi weapon. Fun fact, Seni Silat Kuntau Tekpi is an ancient martial art that was existed in the 18th century in Kadaram, modern day Kedah, Malaysia. This art was originally taught to Commander in Chief, Royal Guards, and also Royal Army of Ancient Malay Kingdom to fend off Siamese army at that time. You should consider visiting Malaysia to learn the brutal art of Seni Silat Kuntau Tekpi and give your thoughts about Malaysian heritage. Cheers 🥂

Hello Jesse-san! I have been studying Kobudo for some time under Shihan Roger Wehrhahn of Mountain Teachings. Thank you for providing such amazing and free content to the world. It is a truly selfless act and I have learned a lot from you. I noticed something that you are doing that I have been told should not be done, The thumb placement on the Sai when in the natural grip should not be above the Moto - the location where the Yoko or prongs extend out from the weapon, and instead should be placed below the Moto which still provides support but protects the thumb from getting struck when using the Sai in bunkai against another Sai or other weapon. It took me some time to get to the point where it is now very natural. Thank you again for all that you and your family do. The content you provide is exceptional. Arigato gozaimasu

Nice, as Raphael is skilled in the use of his sais. He is able to use them for the Kobudō to trap his enemies weapons within their prongs or use them like daggers, stabbing his opponent. Holding them in a reverse grip between his fingers as well as use the pommel of his sais to increase the effect of his punches combining of his Ninjutsu with his Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, MMA, Pro & Greco-Roman Wrestling, Sumo, Lucha Libre, Street Fighting, Krav Maga, Defendu, Regular & Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu, Ansatsuken, Taijutsu, Aikido, Judo, MCMAP, CQC, Sambo, Sanshou, and Systema.

Thanks for the great video. One caveat, you mention the high cross block to block a baseball bat which is much heavier than a bo. Make sure you block to one side and step to the other side if it is a baseball bat. This way the weight of the bat is less likely to pass through the block. Many people could block the bo, but not a properly striking bat. Another option is to move in, block close to the handle where the centripetal force is less and move toward the side. Thanks again for the videos. The dojo Skeptic.

You know, Jesse, your Sai strikes look and angle just like the Gow Choi strikes of Kwongsai Southern Mantis, to include the body dynamics. Uechi Ryu is quite similar to Southern mantis and, according to George Mattson, the Sai figures largely in that style, although Kanbun Uechi brought no weapons kata back with him from China. The "phoenix-eye fist" of the mantis Gow Choi (hammer fist) could also represent the forefinger around lower tine grip that some Sai practitioners use for better control, presumably adapted from a European rapier grip.

Jesse, I was taught a military style of defense by my father who was in the Lao Royal Army during the Vietnam war while in his teens. It was fairly similar to FMA, Pencak silat, and Muay Chaiya/Muay Lao. The two forms of a Martial Art: sport/warfare. Let me know your thoughts on this art of war I was taught. In the Art of War, there are 5 dimensions to combat/war. 1st dimension is range fighting/long distance striking. 2nd dimension is CQC via close range striking, clinch, grappling, trips, throws etc. 3rd dimension is ground defense/fighting, wrestling. 4th dimension is extensions/weaponry. The last which is the most important is the Mental/Spiritual warfare. "The Art of fighting without fighting" in Bruce's words. I believe with this aspect in mind, one can be prepared for a home invasion because in the end of it all Martial Arts is for defending and protecting not only yourself but those who can't defend themselves. God bless your journey Sensei Enkamp in the mighty name of The Sensei Jesus Christ Amen
