I saw that he left the leftover bits hanging as it looks good and it's the universal standard. However Wado, old Shotokan and some old styles use to twist the hanging bits around the belt so that there are no loose ends. When I asked Yoshisiko Iwasaki (Wado ryu Shisan) why he answered that when he was just starting out as a white belt in Japan, the black belts when doing kumite (yes, you heard right...) would grab belt loose ends and give them a beating as they could not run away akin to a dog on a leash. Hence loose ends just for presentation (rei), but not for application (kumite).

I start to one side, left usually, then circle my body twice. It doesn't cross this way but feels more comfortable to wear. I used to wear it crossed but only the last few years I've uncrossed it. Of course no disrespect meant.
@KARATEbyJesse8 жыл бұрын
+Jimmy tay ilor Great! The method displayed in the video (crossing behind your back) is the traditional Japanese way of tying the obi (belt). A modern version without the "x" also exists, but some karate organizations consider it improper. We recommend you always follow the etiquette of your dojo and sensei.

A nice set of interpretations for memorizing how to tie the belt. Insightful too.
@teikarate2 жыл бұрын
i used to tie my belt this way, then at some point, maybe 25 years ago I started tying it a different way which gets rid of the cross over at the back, now I see both ways in different clubs. Interestingly I took Ju Jitsu up a few months ago and when I passed my first coloured belt, it was presented to me and tied around my waist by one of the instructors in the way you have shown Jesse. Made me think that the origin of this traditional way, was simply derived from the way the old judo instructors awarded the belts to students, i.e. it just made sense to tie the obi around the student that way while standing in front of the student. I like the deeper meaning though. :) p.s. I'm sitting my 2nd Dan on Friday, only 22 years after my 1st! I may just tie my belt differently.

Curiously in Japanese JuJutsu, at least the style I train (MotoHa Yoshin Ryu), we don’t tie the belt too tight, as it can be removed more quickly to use for tying and restraining techniques. We tie it the same way as this video though.
