The school's rule also has flaw in it cuz many 3rd or 4th graders are much better than the 5th graders, so why would the boy have to waste his time til fifth grade when he could already be in debate team? This is not trying to have a "special treatment", this is giving out an opinion that the school should change or reconsider every situations like him. The mom defended for the boy because of the motherhood, other parents are just too lazy to say it out, or they think those rules are obvious while they're not!

its a protective measure against parents who might force their children instead of facilitating their learning. That's why the teacher said it's the boards rule; while exceptions can be made and are handled by ethics committees, rules are made for the general population. For example in my district, students cant join music lessons until the third grade. That is not to say children dont have the capability to learn music (indeed, many talented children pick up an instrument at three or four even), but because for a vast majority of children, they are not sure about their interests in order to commit to one seriously, and it is difficult for a teacher (unlike a parent) to force a child to pay attention. It also takes longer to teach unexposed younger children to read sheet music or work in collaboration patiently. Edit for clarity.

Great to hear about a parent protesting costly purchases. In my opinion, parents shouldn’t have to pay for anything in public school. The school districts are not allocating funds appropriately, and some teachers are just doing what seems easiest - telling the kids to obtain supplies.

Except at the very beginning, Jessica asked several loaded questions like "So you don't care about these kids at all?". That can't be answered properly, and she also went straight into an attack on his character that implied he was a coward. A smart debate/speech teacher would have said "I refuse to engage with you because you are not acting in good faith."
@Nlinzer3 жыл бұрын
No, you need to learn how to fight ad hominin attacks. In the real world people won't pull punches and ad hominin attacks are the most effective way of winning. Destroy people's faith in a person and no matter their argument you will win. Convince those watching your opponent is an idiot, is cruel and a coward and that opponent will lose no matter what. Every person learning debate needs to know how to fight against this, otherwise they are missing both a powerful tool how to defend and yes a powerful tool to attack. After all if you can do ad hominin attacks too. No reason to play nice and only defensively
@brandondavidson40853 жыл бұрын
@@Nlinzer The issue is that as soon as a person start calling you names, they've proven that they aren't going to listen to you anymore. You are not morally obligated to engage with people who just want to frustrate you
@Nlinzer3 жыл бұрын
@@brandondavidson4085 true, but if you want to win in a debate you need to know how to effectivly call someone names and defend yourself against name calling. Real life debates are a lot less fair, reasonable, and about issues then in mock debates. Even in a law court where clear Ad Hominin attacks are against the rules, if you can subtly do it its a very good way to win. After all Ad Hominin is affective. The question is whether Debate team is meant to prepare you for real life, or meant to give you a taste of what real life should be.

I know I'm echoing the sentiments of practically every comment here, but I really love how they wrote the teacher. Normally, a scene like this would have had her debate the debate teacher into submission, thus making the viewer wonder how this fraud even got his job. But the writers were savvy enough instead to run with the premise of the scene, having him understand her debate tactics and point them out to the class, using her to teach the students in a live environment. I know I'll be the 544th person to say "That's really great writing!", but that really is great writing.
