How many horse/rider combinations will be removed from Olympic competition? I'm not sure what the rules are concerning age when the games are delayed as they are from 2020 to 2021?

There is not set age limit for horses or riders in dressage. The only age restriction is that horse must be at least 8 years old to compete at FEI levels. Most horses are retired usually around 18 years old sometimes before or later. It all depends on the well-being of the horse and the discretion of the owners, trainers, and riders. However, quite a few horse and rider combinations will not be competing in the Tokyo 2021 Olympics even though they have already qualified. For example, both Laura Graves and Kasey Perry-Glass, both American team riders have retired their horses this year since they felt it was best for them. They didn’t want to push their horses into another year of intense competition. It is sad that we won’t get to see them compete at the Olympics but I highly respect both those ladies for putting their horses first rather than catering to their own egos, that takes real horsemanship. Not sure if the USA will even send a team for Tokyo 2021 and if we do it won’t be nearly as strong as it would have been with 2 of our best horse/rider combinations both opted out.
