I can't pick my daughter up at all, due to scoliosis and chronic pain, and when she was a baby I spent whole days sitting on the couch with her lying on me because I couldn't get up. You are a smart, loving, emotionally stable person, and you will make a great mom even if you can't pick your child up all the time, or ever. You and Claudia will make the greatest mommies ever, your family will be the most loving and stable, and that's more than a lot of non-disabled people can attest to.

TuckerFearnBentley um no have you ever heard of something called child abuse, being unable to have an abortion, being physically or mentally challenged and not being able to raise a child or simply being too financially unstable to afford to have a child ! Social workers are people who go to homes where children aren’t safe or can’t/aren’t being cared for. They don’t just TAKE children, that’s illegal. If a child is unsafe at its home, the government put them into foster care or they go straight to another family that has had been through extensive testing and checking to see if they are now fit to raise this child. Some people who don’t want to get an abortion will have set family’s who will adopt their child from birth. There is such thing as illegal adoption but the people who adopt don’t know it’s illegal, the ‘workers’ take/abduct kids from their home and put them up for adoption.

I have zero desire to have biological children, and hope to build my family through adoption. But I've never understood why people ask same sex couples who want biological children why they're not adopting instead. None of my straight friends with kids have ever been asked why they didn't adopt. "I want the experience of carrying a child" or "I want to have a blood tie with my children" are completely valid reasons to have a biological child instead of adopting, regardless of orientation or marital status.

In my opinion it is strange that there is a difference in the topic of adoption, depending on whether a couple is heterosexual or homosexual. I also find it rude to ask questions about a couple's family planning, which is very private topic. I believe that many couples do not consider the possibility of adoption or foster children at all. That's why there are still so many children in children's homes that don't have a family that loves them and I find that sad.

I have no experience in the adoption process. Are the children to be adopted in foster care or state care? Is state care keeping all the children in one building not in homes? The reason I ask is if they are not being cared for by families (foster care) I think the system needs to be improved in regard to speed of adoption approval as the children need to be adopted as quickly as possible for their own well being. So many stories start with he/she was neglected by their parents then put into state care then ended up on the streets/in jail.
@starsapart93114 жыл бұрын
@@superfluityme I think it varies by country, and I do believe the trend is toward foster care over group homes when possible, as group homes are associated with worse outcomes for the kids who spend significant time there. That said, I think where children are placed depends on a lot of circumstances, and some might end up in group homes because they've had difficulties with multiple foster families, or there aren't enough foster families available, or maybe fewer foster parents are accepting teens, etc. I think it varies greatly. That said, it's important to remember that the main goal of foster care is to reunite kids with their biological families if it's safe and reasonable to do so - meaning kids might spend time in foster care but not be available for adoption got years as the courts and civil services give the parents opportunities to get back on their feet, correct unsafe behaviors, etc. Obviously reuniting the family isn't always in the best interest of the child (for example if there's violence, drugs, abuse, etc.) but the point remains that the foster care period may be very long before termination of parental rights (TPR here in the US) occurs and children become available for adoption. It's complicated.

I didn't realize it at the time, but I grew up with a mother suffering from severe, at times debilitating, depression. She hid most of the signs from me until I was old enough to understand, but looking back I can see that she did spent far more time sleeping than "most" parents. I can safely say it never bothered me as a child or in hind site. I learned to entertain myself, enjoy reading, play quietly, and all in all "give mom a bit of time". As you say, the love was there, and that was enough.
@tabitas.2719 Жыл бұрын
@@franksonatra I think there is some difference between the mother and a sibling - your sister is missing her mother's love, so she'd be clingier and more needs than you can fulfill as a sister at your age. And as the OP said, kids will be disappointed at times - as long as I'm loving and patient and do my best to make up for it it's worked out so far (and our baby is only months old) - kids sense so much. It isn't/shouldn't be your job to offset your parents' doings for your sister on top of everything. It's hard enough as an adult at times. ❤

please look into ergonomic slings, wraps and carriers. babywearing allows the wearer to hold the baby securely while in a wheelchair or scooter, or when using crutches. it could also help reserve energy because the sling supports the baby you can let your arms relax (for example)
@codename4954 жыл бұрын

Also sometimes just the added weight is too much. I did babywearing for two of my kids, but my body wasn't strong enough to with my last child. My kids just know I can not carry them much, if at all. I can hold them sitting, but not long while standing. I also just can't play certain physical games the play with their father.
@krisb2944 жыл бұрын
Babywearing helped my scoliosis (similar to physical therapy), but I could not use soft structured carriers (Ergo, etc. I tried multiple & they all hurt like crazy). I found that a Christina's Ruckless (a paticular way to use/tie a woven wrap) is the best for me (with less mobility, it is getting harder to do but my spouse has learned how to help me). It distributes the weight very well & does not hurt me like many ties do. However, I can also do a FWCC (woven or stretch wrap tie) & a BWCC (woven wrap tie) rather well, they just don't distribute weight as well (but a FWCC has the lovely benefit of being able to be 'pre-tied' so that all you have to do when it comes time to wear baby is tighten it all & retie the knots).
@krisb2944 жыл бұрын
@FearnTuckerBentley I would agree that we can hold/carry babies too much; if that's all they've ever known, it can be difficult to transition into not being held/carried as they get older. Also, yes, carriers can be very dangerous if done incorrectly (not just for the infant, but for the caretaker as well). However, that does not make holding a child or using a carrier [properly] inherently wrong or dangerous. If you're going to use a carrier, learn how to do it first. Make sure the child is 'close enough to kiss', make sure they are not in a position that would close off their airway (bent neck or something covering their airway), make sure the carrier is safe for wearing (like osnaburg cotton=safe wrap vs quilting cotton=unsafe wrap. And not damaged or recalled), etc.

Right? I understand the bureaucratic need for a set dividing line, but how many people suffer needlessly because they fall just short of it? It's not quite the same, but I fall right around the point of meeting the diagnostic criteria for an eating disorder--as in, it'd basically be a judgment call for any particular professional whether or not it "counts." And while it's great that I'm not more significantly impacted, it's also made it really difficult to get help, and it's really hard not to feel like I'm lying when I talk about it. But in reality, what matters is that it DOES impact my life, frequently and substantially, and I shouldn't need to suffer *more* to have a right to get support.

Being declared legally disable is just a recognition of an already existing disability. It not like people is perfectly healthy and the moment they get the card, they get "cripple". I will say that sometimes having the "legally" title does help a lot though. My mother is "legally" blind, meaning that she has lost enough vision to not be totally blind but enough that she's considered disabled in certain aspects of her life. When she says she's blind, most people treat her as if she's totally blind, which she's not and doesn't want to be treated like she is. She still has some vision and does her best to make sure people realize that, yes, she needs a cane, and yes, she does qualify for special care because of it, but that no, you don't have to baby her. The point is to show that she only needs certain things but doesn't want to be treated as a child. Just thought I'd share that because it's pretty interesting to some people I've known. Lmao.

For the "asking about disability" thing, my rule of thumb that I tell people is "Don't make it the first thing you ask about." Definitely don't stop a stranger on the street and ask what's wrong with them, and when getting to know someone, ask about their life/interests/background/etc before asking about their disability. If you're probably going to only meet someone once, you don't need to know at all. I don't mind telling people about my disability, but it's extremely obvious when they're asking just to satisfy their own curiosity vs asking because they care.

Though I often get distracted even without any distractions so I find myself relistening to parts once I catch that I forgot I was listening to an audiobook xD Though I also listen at double speed which ends up being about as fast as I would read normally (though I tend to omit words as I read just because I'm used to speed reading things and will naturally ignore adjectives and adverbs and other fluff). That last part actually means I've caught things I missed before by listening to the book instead.

To echo what people said, there’s a quote from Midnight Blue-Light Special by Seanan McGuire (who is also queer and disabled and a fantastic author) that goes “Blood is thicker than water, but family isn’t just about blood. Family is about faith, and loyalty, and who you love. If you don’t have those things, I don’t care what the blood says. You’re not family.” All the best and best of luck to you

As a disabled parent of a 5 yo at age 53, there are days when I am sad about what I cannot do with my (very) physically active son. But then, he constantly tells me that I am the one he wants to snuggle with, the one who calms him, the one who cooks the things he likes, etc. Having a disabled parent has also made him more caring, both emotionally and physically than many children his age. He helps with my physical therapy with joy and a sense of fun (which makes it easier, more engaging and more consistent), and has developed patience because mommy sometimes needs mobility aides or cannot go as fast as he would like. In this way, he and I learn constantly from each other and he is the best motivation I could have to care for my health as best I can. Happy parenting!

Jessica, what you said about emotional stability is PERFECT. Obviously, I've only seen a glimpse of your life, but you genuinely seem to be pretty good at coping in healthy ways and being open about feelings and struggles, and it's so important for a child to see that. So many kids, if not most, end up trying to make sense of their feelings on their own because their parents simply don't know how to help them. We tend to focus a lot on the physical fragility of babies, so it's understandable that people would be curious how having a disability would affect parenting, but honestly, it's so much easier to meet a child's physical needs than it is to meet their emotional needs, especially as they grow, and it seems like you're in a good position to be able to do both.

Jessica, I have a lot of similar physical issues and I've dropped just about everything, but the only time I've dropped a baby was when I was 9 (and I've held a lot of babies- I was fulltime caretaker for 6+ kids, there was usually always a baby). It helps that babies generally are held close to the body, and there are all sorts of baby carriers that are easy enough to put on and off so you don't have to use your arm/ hands to constantly hold the baby when you need to carry them. Also, they now have all sorts of easily available adaptive equipment for disabled parents- baby seats that attach to your chair, wheelchair strollers, baby lifters, cribs that are easy to access sitting/ that don't require you to bend over the bars, and all other sorts of things I would have killed for when I was taking care of babies day in and day out.

You are justified, anxiety exhaustion is real and you need to rest. You are putting the pressure on yourself as part of your anxiety. I'd say if you could try to explain it to your older of the 6 that mummy needs a nap and it can be a family nap time or it's the time for the older children to help with the younger. I'm all about the nap life with my anxiety and depression and I know how hard it is for that aspect but you being a mother to 6 is incredible. Please be kinder to yourself. Your health is important to be able to provide for the little ones so denying yourself the sleep you need hurts you and them. You are wonderful and your children are lucky to have you.

I use a walker for balance, which helps me not get so dizzy so I don’t fall. It also has a seat so if I feel a fall coming (it’s weird, it’s all neurological) I can sit to avoid a fall & my endurance is terrible so I can sit for a rest. But I CAN stand up and walk, so I’ve been accused of faking. The rest of my disability are all invisible. Well, the doc gave me a handicapped sign for parking close (my driver, I can’t drive) can help me inside faster, especially this time of year in Midwest USA there’s ice and snow and things that make falls a bigger risk.

Would you consider having an adoption advocate and/or an adopted adult on your channel to discuss the real truth of adoption on your channel? I am adopted and the societal ideas around adoption don't tend to relate much to the reality of the adoption experience. You are so lovely about bringing awareness to the issues that effect your life, and adoption is something most people don't want to talk or hear about. I think it would be incredible to open up that discussion on your channel.

I am mostly housebound, so personally when I leave the house, I really like to just enjoy the experience and to some degree leave my condition behind. Having someone I don’t even know very well as me 101 questions about the most painful area of my life (then even worse, listen to their advice/opinions on it) is so not welcome!!!

I'm autistic and so many non-autistic people, not through negligence or abuse but through misinformation, lack of help and education, inadvertently harm their autistic children, it happened to me in fact. So I'd love to adopt an autistic child with my husband and he wants to too! He hasn't been diagnosed (he's american and doesn't have the money to pay for it) but we're pretty sure he's autistic too. As someone who didn't have the emotional support, not because of being LGBTQ+, but because of being a cis female, I can say that I would have rather gone without some of the other support I did have to have emotional support. I was raised in a very confusing way, both to hate being female but also that I had to be feminine and be completely subject to whatever my "man" wanted. Would have given anything to have such loving and supportive parents as I'm sure you two will be.
