Gordon Ramsey was handled the same way when he picked up American film opportunities. If you every watch his stuff before he came to America, he was passionate, but caring. American television really wanted to play up and lean into the dramatic anger- fueled AH. That's what got ratings at the time: shock. It worked, and he made a fortune, such that he can now truly be himself. Sometimes people do what they have to do, so there's finally room for them to be who they want to be.

First time seeing this guy, and I like him! I love how he started off saying he is not the "end all be all" judge of the work. So many other teachers try to make you their version of you. The "imperfect" parts of it are what make it so beautiful to me. Well done!

Jess I have a story with Nigel too ahah!!! Not sure if I have ever told you. 5-6 years ago when I was just starting out I had like a second portrait shoot in my entire life but I was SO PROUD of the photos!!! I used to watch Tony and Chelsey Live shows where invited guests would review the photos and one of them was set to be with Nigel... ofc I sent one of the portraits I took!!! To my surprise he DID review it. He didn't say anything bad (cheers to him) but he also kinda said it's nothing special (which it was tbh) but it gave me such a KICK to start creating more and more! Kudos to him!❤

Nigel's advice to own your work really sticks out to me. Owning your work is so important, but also so hard to do sometimes, especially as a woman who is a professional creative (I can seriously relate - the imposter syndrome is real sometimes). It's clear that you have a lot of talent and have developed some incredible skills over the years, so I'm glad Nigel recognizing and acknowledging that gave you the validation you needed to know you're killin' it.

I learned lighting in the early 1970s assisting Monte Zucker, then one of the top wedding photographer/ teacher / author in the US who wrote a monthly column on wedding photography in the Professional Photographer magazine and taught at the PPofA school and conventions. I got the job by cutting down all my painstakingly printed and matted Zone System prints after he had critiqued each of them in a way I’d never seen before. He took a pair of L-shaped black mat board cropping guides which he pulled in tight on the faces and other focal points in the photos and slowly expanded the frame asking me to tell him when I saw anything which distracted from the focal point enter the frame. It made me realize that when composing the photo and when printing it I had let myself get ‘tunnel vision’ on the subject and tuned out the distractions! My twenty 11x14 prints dry mounted on 18% gray 16x20 mats became a collection of borderless 8x10, 5x7 and for one photo of a disconnected couple two separate 4x5 individual portraits. What I learned about lighting from him was that it is CONTRAST with the background tone that creates a ‘magnetic’ attraction and tunnel vision in photographs and any form of art. What makes a ‘low key’ portrait pull the attention of the viewer to the FRONT of the face is using a lighting pattern which creates a “mask” of highlights on the FRONT of the face and keeps the sides in shadow. Clothing plays a role in this because if it contrasts more with the background than the highlights on the FRONT of the face on background darker than the skin it will DISTRACT. That is why he always had clothing consultation with his subjects and had them wear clothing with tone and color darker than caucasian skin but lighter than the dark background. What to do with a subject in a white dress? Put them on a white background the dress will not contrast with and use a low ratio lighting ratio with key and fill identical strength to avoid dark (distracting) shadows on the face. On a neutral white background COLOR CONTRAST and light neutral or cool-tone pastel clothing becomes the most effective way to make the FRONT of the face the thing that contrasts the most. For a full face portrait I will use a centered ‘butterfly’ pattern with lights as far away as I can get them for soft front-to-back gradients with the higher key light creating the mask pattern of highlights (and specular highlight 3D shape clues) with reflectors on both sides of the face just out of frame to make the FRONT of the face darker and warmer and the sides blend into the background. It is more difficult to shoot ‘high key’ (i.e. white background) portraits in B&W because you lose the ability to create contrast with color. For that reason it is easier to created that ‘magnetic’ attraction and ‘tunnel vision’ on a dark background with a subject in dark clothing using a “short” key lighting strategy with it 45° to the far side of the nose and 90° to the camera axis in an oblique view of the race or 45° from the nose and 135° from camera axis for a perfectly split ‘penny’ profile. In my first professional print competition and the MD State PPofA convention in 1973 I entered a photo of a black stage actor I’d taken in college giving an angry ‘black power’ salute with raised fist. It was very low key but with high compelling contrast on his face and raised fist. I mounted it with three tones of gray construction paper which made it look was mounted on a 3D box and titled it “Stand Up!” One of the judges was Jay Maisel very successful commercial photographer. I took home the trophy for “Most Creative Photo” because of the way the contrast of the highlights on the face pulled the eye to the face then up the arm to the raised fist then back down to the face repeatedly creating “hang time” and a strong impression in the mind of the judges. This was a principle I also learned from Monte about contrast and eye path in photos. If the face contrasts strongly with the background the eye of the viewer will go there first, but where do you the photographer want it to go next and will the attention return to the face or will the viewer decide they’ve seen enough? This is where relative contrast and the use of negative space become factors in composition and ‘hang time’ attention span of the viewer or judge. It is why the Rule of Thirds works so well in art IF the focal point also contrasts well with the background. The contrast pulls the eye across the context in the 2/3 of the frame it takes to get there and then creates so much negative space the eye isn’t tempted to wander off it UNLESS SOMETHING ELSE CONTRASTS and attracts the eye. In my photo of the actor the face and fist created a ‘ping-pong’ linear eye path. Even better is when three elements in the photo which have a contrast gradient between them create a triangular eye path which in a portrait you can create with arms and hands to lead the eye of the viewer form contrasting face, down one arm to the hands - which need to be doing something interesting adding context to the subject; i.e, carpenter holding hammer, MD holding stethoscope, architect holding plans, etc. - then back up the other arm back to the face. The more interesting the stuff in the hands is the more likely the viewer will take a second trip “around the bases” and that’s what makes a composition a ‘home run’ 😊

Another thing you are forgetting Jessica is that you are the only one of the two of you who saw the whole film roll, not to mention the rest of your entire body of work throughout your career. You went through the process of selecting this photo from the others. There are amazing qualities of the other pictures that you know are not present here. You are making mental comparisons that Nigel can't. Nigel couldn't see the stuff you loved about those other photos. He only sees what's good about this photo, not the good stuff that's missing from it. I truly believe it is impossible to demonstrate the best of ourselves and our talents within a single instance. I'm a singer and no single take of a song will ever be a true representation of what i'm really capable of. I think that's why we are so hard on ourselves.

I agree with your first instinct of the lighting.. it's obviously very beautiful and her eyes pop, but the lighting contrast doesn't feel intentional. I love you and follow you! Do you girl!

Hey my dear this is the sweetest thing to watch. And seeing you say that you love photography and you being able to work in the thing that brings you joy. It’s just so exciting. And also as an artist hearing him, say that you need to learn how to re-create this, that had me shook. Because sometimes I think of art as magic. And I’m like, but how can I re-create magic? It was magic! I’m just a vessel! So I’m sitting with that notion of being aware of specifically what I would need to do to re-create what happened on that “magical” night. That is blowing my mind. Thank you for this, my dear.

Good work. You are a truly talented photographer. I'm not a portrait or fashion photographer by any stretch of the imagination, but I do appreciate talent and passion as a teacher who wants the best for my students. Again, great job.
