I absolutely adored the reveal at the end that the reason Boimler was acting so weird around Una was because she's the Starfleet recruitment poster girl in the future, complete with the "ad astra per aspera" motto on her posters. I legit got teary at that. This show has done such a good job of developing a character who was barely there in TOS into someone I am wholeheartedly invested in.

The Una arc in this was a bit heart wrenching. She starts thinking that she _does_ turn out to be the villain, as an Illyrian in Star Fleet, and that all she's ever striven for will be demolished by her worst fears for herself. And then finding out that it's exactly the opposite and she does get to be the officer she's always dreamed of being. The acting was great. There is an almost childlike wistfulness in her response. Super humanizing of a character that struggles with balancing humanity and the aloofness of being always perfect.

I loved that Uhura gets her shine. Uhura on TOS is the reason I got into Star Trek, science fiction, space, and that spark of imagination did so much for me. And my mom was the person to introduce me to TOS because she was a teen when it was on the air. So I was LIVING for Mariner's interactions with her. I got a chance to meet and take a picture with Nichelle Nichols at a Star Trek convention. I had a Boimler-esque reaction to Una. I was stunned into silence because I was feeling all the things. She was absolutely lovely. What I'll always remember is that when I took the picture with her, she called me back to take another. Quote, "Let's do it again. I didn't give you my best." I. DIED. on the inside. It's hands down my most favorite picture. Star Trek Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks give me so much life and makes my nerd heart happy.

One of my favorite moments in this episode is when Boimler gets on the saddle, he throws his leg over in a wide arc and yells "Riker" (just like how Riker always gets into a chair). I never got into Enterprise during its run until years after it had been canceled and I was blown away by how good it was as it finally did what I wanted to see in a Star Trek series. It alternated between single self-contained episodes and story arcs that could be two episodes, three episodes, five episodes or even an entire season long. I always felt bad after watching it that I never supported the show and felt as though I was one of the contributing factors that led to its cancellation.... If it had only gotten the same number of seasons as previous Star Trek series, we would have seen the Earth romulan war. =,(
@thebitterfig99034 ай бұрын
@@bigemugamer I've subsequently seen Enterprise. While it's probably still my least favorite Trek series (haven't seen the OG Animated Series), that's mostly because something has to be last, and the gap isn't as big as I'd have figured. Early Enterprise, I loved the enthusiasm. We've never been this close to a comet this big before, so let's check it out. The crew's excitement is infectious. There's stray clunkers and occasional Trek awkwardness, and the first season had too many grade-school "falls face first into boobies" gags, but overall it's still pretty good. I found the Xindi from Season 3 to be a drag, skipped most of that. But Season 4 really did something clever with those multi-part episodes. I think I mostly preferred the eager exploration to the preludes to the Romulan war, but on the whole it was a good show. Shran is an all-timer supporting character alien, up there with Gowron and Tomalak. Not quite to the levels of Gul Dukat, but that's a hard bar to clear. But most importantly, I came away from the watch understanding what someone else might love about the show. While I doubt I'll rewatch the series, there's episodes I'd rewatch.

I kinda thought we were going to get a glimpse of the NX-01 at the TOS era version of the Fleet Museum because they were going to cannibalize part of the ship to get the rare metal needed to make the portal work. A large part of me is glad they confirmed via dialogue that the current tradition of using pieces of a ship's past version in its current incarnation is still done in the 2250s...but another part of me was hoping to see both the SNW gang plus Mariner & Boimler swoon over the NX-01 as a mutual bonding moment.
@snorpenbass4196 Жыл бұрын
@@generalilbis Picard did in fact also do a little friendly nod towards TATV being not entirely canon by having the NX-01 at the museum be the _NX-Refit_ ...which was designed by the show's resident designer for the unfilmed Season 5, and would make TATV non-canon due to the finale having the old NX-01 look exactly the same. Basically, if TATV was canon, the NX-01 would have looked _very_ different. I suspect Frakes and the showrunners of the whole thing did as a little tribute _and_ take that to Berman & Braga. I didn't take Nurse Chapel's reaction as being sad about being a footnote, but distress about whether she is having a negative impact on him in terms of the things he is supposed to achieve in his future. That the changes he is making in part to try and be more connected with her may mean he's not able to do some of the things in the future that Boimler seems to think are so important and so contingent on him being his old self.
@heatherfyffe3618 Жыл бұрын
I think it was absolutely both. Worry that what she thought was a good influence on him was actually a negative thing, and that at the same time the fact that this influence doesn't last means that she's 'doomed to be a footnote'. Clashing thoughts in her mind... 'well maybe I fight for this anyway, maybe this is a love worth changing the future for... and then what if that means he doesn't become the person he could become... oh no...' Honestly I'm not a fan of Chapel-Spock -- for all the criticisms about people who are canon sticklers, I still think you can break canon *too much*. You can't just handwave away every canon break, you can't just dismiss every criticism based on canon, solely because you don't think canon matters, because it has to matter *SOME* or else we're just not even playing in the same sandbox. If these aren't actually the same characters we know later, then why are we visiting their younger selves? Why not just be visiting new characters? Sure we can 'massage' canon and we can headcanon and fanwank and retcon through a lot, but there's a point that's too far, where it's not simply a 'massage' but that it's different characters. And to me, Spock and Chapel *actually* having a romance is too far. BUT. With this one turbolift conversation with Boimler, I *may* be coming around. I might now be able to see how it all fits together to lead to the future characters we do know and have it make sense in-universe. Boimler just saved canon hahaha :)
@lovetheblue6659 Жыл бұрын
Good observation! I felt *exactly* the same!! She was more concerned that her influence was changing his persona than she was that their relationship was necessarily doomed.

I feel like this episode kinda paints her actions in TOS in a different light; like her conflict isn't so much "I love Spock and he feels nothing :( " as it is "I love Spock but I know I can't because his future lies elsewhere"
@kellyloganme Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting thought. My first reaction was that Nurse Chapel's reaction was because she was just starting to open herself to the idea of a romantic love that could overcome both of their sets of challenges. She had already allowed herself to be swept away by their passion but was clearly still fighting with herself. Still being in the early glow of newly expressed joy probably helped hold all the naysaying, defensive sides of herself at bay, but perhaps only just. Then Boimler reveals a future of Spock's that obviously conflicts with her dream of the *both of them* overcoming their emotional suppressions and being together and serious all the illogical, fantasy love arguments away, leaving her at the mercy of all her worst fears about Spock and herself. In fact, I'll bet she immediately decides that she is the one that messes up the relationship in the future, and that's why she feels so lost and paralyzed. Also, presumably she wants Spock to embrace his human side to be with her, but Boimler makes it very clear that it is the *Vulcan* Spock who does all the things the universe needs, so if she prevents that she is sacrificing untold numbers of people's lives for what she might see as a selfish desire for happiness.

31:28 when I saw the episode, and finding out that when they constructed the Constitution Enterprise, they put a piece of the last ship to bare the name Enterprise ie. the NX-01. Made me think about the theme song for Enterprise and realizing that, It has been a long road Gettin' from there to here; for NX-01 and It's been a long time, and that time is finally near.
@samfisher6606 Жыл бұрын
I loved this episode so much! I think my favorite part about this episode is that I was so caught up in the crossover aspect of it all that I forgot about the mention of the NX-01 having horonium. So by the time Boimler had that Eureka moment about the NX-01, I completely forgot about it. Ransom calling Una the “hottest officer ever” is hilarious. I just loved all the ST: Enterprise references in general.I also loved the changing of the history, giving Orion _scientists_ the credit for the discovery. The scene of the animated SNW crew and the way it breaks the 4th wall was the honestly the best part second only to seeing Mariner and Boiler geek out the whole time. And I think there was a reference to Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind in this episode. Who was Pelia quoting to Boimler?
@bemasaberwyn55 Жыл бұрын
My bet is Cochrane or Archer
@jessetaggart5573 Жыл бұрын
Pelia was quoting Cary Grant. While he was not mentioned by name in this episode Cary Grant was established to exist in the Star Trek universe on Voyager's "Year of Hell" then B'Elanna Torres wrongly remembered Clark Gable starring in the movie To Catch a Thief, when in fact it had been Cary Grant. Harry Kim believed that this mistake came from the identical initials of the two, C.G. This Voyager factoid I found on Memory Alpha.

I ADORE that they used actual FACT to solve the problem instead of some heist fiction. * USS Enterprise CVN-6 was built * The USS Enterprise CVN-65 used portholes from the CVN-6 in the captain's in-port cabin and conference room. * Steel from USS Enterprise CVN-65 is and will be recycled and used in the construction of USS Enterprise CVN-80 * Portholes from the CVN-6 will be used in the construction of the CVN-80 * The 80 will also have a time capsule with momentos from both ships. So it makes sense that the NCC-1701 has a piece of the NX-01 in it.

I liked the joke at the end where Ransom (played by Jerry O'Connell) sees the recruitment poster of Number One (played by Rebecca Romijn) and makes all these comments about her being the hottest recruitment poster girl in Star Fleet and basically drooling over her and of course they're married in real life.

1:25 Jessie is all of us here! I really don’t think I was prepared for how emotional it would make me to see Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome portray Mariner and Boimler in live action. It got me right in my soul and I loved every second of this episode. The only downside was that it left me wanting more, and I’m sure it was a logistical nightmare to make so I doubt it will happen again, but I’m so grateful for what we did get. It was so excellently written, blending both writing styles so effortlessly, and amazingly performed by all involved. Bring on the musical episode!

@@DonWan47 I laughed, as I know that feeling. I have the opposite problem, being in Los Angeles, I often see things "last" or tape delayed. I'm asleep when ST & SW eps drop, so I have to avoid Jesse's videos until work is over as well (5 pm PST). So, if I see something "first", it is fun! Like when I saw that the Mrs. Maisel eps from the last season dropped a day early at 7pm, instead of midnight, it was before anyone noticed! Kinda fun to be amongst the first, for a change!

I will say that one studio that we can support is A24. Even though they're an independent studio, they are meeting every demand from the Writer's Guild and SAG/Aftra. Funny that an indie studio can do that and the big 5 can't. Jessie, I I frigging loved this episode! I'm ashamed to say that I still haven't watched Lower Decks, but after this episode, I really have to. Everything in this episode was gold. I'm so happy to see how giddy you were for this one. It certainly warms my heart (well, that empty space where I should have a heart). Awesome review!!!

I had to watch it 3x before checking for this video here. I am processing this like cray cray. It's got the whole fans of fans thing that I always love... temporal police bait.. industrial design, pranks and hijinks... but what a lot of people might nor realize is that it's axis point is how sweet, wonderful yet totally amazing Tendi is... and how we all want to save her future.

@Geekus Жыл бұрын
I also love how Jack and Tawny tackled the acting challenge of bringing physicality to characters they’re used to voicing only, they move like their animated counterparts with just the right hint of cartoonishness while still being flesh and blood incarnations of Boimler and Mariner. Fantastic work! Oh gosh, and that really brief but powerful moment when Pike wishes he could have one more argument with his father despite never getting along, that cut to Mariner’s reaction speaks to her entire relationship with her mother without a word. It’s moment like that and scenes like Boimler regretting potentially impacting Spock and Chapel’s relationship that enrich Lower Decks emotionally beyond a mere parody. Overall it still felt like a SNW episode, and a great one at that, but the fact that Lower Decks energy could be compatible with, let alone enhance an episode of more center stage Trek I think is the definitive proof that LD has something truly valuable to add to Star Trek’s DNA and has indeed added it. Easily one of the most creative and enjoyable Trek episodes to date, I’d say it’s modern Trek’s “Trials and Tribble-ations” moment! 🖖

My favorite thing about this episode is the use of the animation. Not only were all the Lower Decks scenes done in animation, but the SNW intro was done in animation as well with the Lower Decks flare added to it, and the Romulan Ale was used for a cool animation joke at the end of the episode similarly a hallucination like another Paramount property, Dora the Explorer, which had almost the exact same joke. Edit: Also, I'm currently getting my mom and her boyfriend through Star Trek right now. Since I am all caught up, I'm doing a fairly well thought out viewing guide. Kelvin films to get them into it, and then skipping Enterprise for Spoilers about other shows and going straight into Disco season 1, watch the Cage, then watch Disco season 2 and move into SNW mixing in relevant TOS episodes. But I'll have to skip out on this episode until after Enterprise and essentially all the other shows and movies. And then I can finally get into more Disco. Though I'll probably mix TOS throughout the viewing order in general because it can be pretty dated at times. And I will spare them the pain TAS. And Short Treks isn't relevant enough to show them.
