Really enjoyed this! Going to do this on one of my clients today. Ive been a color specialist for 6 years now and I gotta say, I really appreciate how long and detailed this was!! When I watch other people’s demo videos I get so frustrated because they speed it up so much I can’t even see the sectioning! So THANK YOU!

I finished cosmetology school in 2002. It's crazy how things have changed. There are so many things we did not learn. I guess they stick to basics. Then you learn more in the salon. I love that we have u-tube and Pinterest. If I had this back then I would of felt like I was not alone. Back then I had so many questions for other stylist and now we can learn from all over the world. I'm thinking about to going back to school. I have been out of it too long. Plus I also want to go to a make-up school. Thanks for showing your techniques on blonde. I love the money highlights. I wish you would show more highlight and lowlights on brunette. I use to get both but ask for copper, dark brown, red, and golden blonde. That would be a interesting video. I even love when you can do a platinum blonde highlights on top of a another blonde, and a 1-2 more. I love that look wish I could pull that off. Another thing I would love to see how to put extensions in.

I always do the lows first as they also need time to deposit and you don't have to worry about damage. I always use a Bonder in my lightener. And do 2 highs to every low. My lows are chunky sliced and the highs medium to fine. I'm very tedius with my high weaves and pay close attention to how much space is between each weave. When rinsing, I isolate my foils. Usually dropping the lows first really well. Unless I use the lows to tone the highs. It depends. I'll be celebrating 40 years behind the chair soon. #lovmywork

So happy to see you back! Love your color videos! Something I have been doing lately when I have to smudge and tone is applying my toner all over and then laying my root smudge directly over top! Sort of similar to you doing the root smudge and then laying the toner over top, only doing it in the opposite order! (I like to add a little clear to my toner so it can process longer, otherwise the toner would be done way before the root smudge! Clear helps me process them for the same time!) Huge time saver overall! Question for you- do you rinse the olaplex off of the ends before you apply the toner, or do you do it directly over top?? Thanks, love!!!

Shannon VanFleet I was wondering the same thing. Would the olaplex keep the toner from completely coating the hair shaft? I've been told that doing O#2 AFTER toning keeps your toner longer, so would putting the toner OVER #2 do the same?? Anyway-GREAT IDEA!!! I'm going to do my root smudge/toners your way from now on. Eliminate some rinsing time. Thank You 😊

Do you have a problem with your root smudge fading and getting brassy? I was told by a Redken Educator that Shades EQ will always fade back to the underling tone of the level. Great video! That’s pretty smart of the people who came up with the idea to use a piece of photo frame plastic as a balayage board. The regular boards are overpriced IMO. I can’t stop laughing but I think “money pieces” has to do with something else. I can’t help it. My closest sibling was a boy and anything done at the very end that was totally bada$$, no matter what it involved, he would say “woah money shot!” It never failed. I remember way back in 1997 a stylist did verticals and I loved it! No root smudging back then though...my hair always looked much better after 2 weeks.

When you do a root smudge... What decides what level of toner you use? Do you just pick the save level as their natural color? I've been having a hard time finding a perfect tone to use as a smudge... I find that often it gets a little too ashy or a little too warm (dont think my clients notice this. maybe it's cause im so picky but it's a problem for me cause I want it perfect)

Jessi Gish I JUST found your videos last night and I'm OBSESSED. I went to beauty school in 2001! This was way before it was a "thing" to go to beauty school bc all of my friends were going off to college. Long story short, I did hair for about 6 years before I became burnt out. Unfortunately, I learned a VALUABLE lesson. The lesson was I should have been WAY more picky about the salon I chose to work in. I was an eager 18 year old and SO passionate about the beauty industry, but at the time, I was working with women in their late 30's- early 40's and they just didn't have a desire to learn more about the hair industry. I am so passionate about the beauty industry and unfortunately that environment just sucked the life out of me😔. However, I will say that the hair industry was nothing like it is today. All of the different techniques now are AMAZING!!! Probably the best thing I learned at the salon I was talking about before was the slicing technique for highlights. The salon owner I was working for was INCREDIBLE!! She would apologize to me and say that she was sorry that she wasn't a good teacher! Lol. However, I watched everything that I did and soaked up anything and everything I could. She used to laugh and say that balayage was for lazy stylists. I know that's untrue, but it's incredible to see a stylist TODAY, doing the number of foils you do and also see the placement. I learned about those "money pieces" before they were called money pieces but I LOVE the name because they TRULY are MONEY PIECES. I can tell how passionate you are and you are an incredible educator as well! Never apologize for your videos going too long, I could watch you do hair for hours. It's so relaxing to me! Anyhow, I wanted to contact you to see where you were located and if you could do my hair. I've watched hundreds of stylists over the years on KZbin but never wanted to travel for them to do my hair but I would travel to wherever you are just to have you do my hair!! You are truly ONE OF A KIND!!! The industry needs more stylists like you.

How long do you leave the toner on? You said you might leave the root smudge on for 8 minutes before you tone so it’s a total of 10 minutes.? Does that mean you only left the toner on for two minutes?
@taylorgoss97287 жыл бұрын
Hi Jessi! I do a lot of work like this. Balayage is my specialty. I was just wondering how long a service like this takes you. I use pretty much all of the same product you do - LOVE shades! And also, how much would you charge for this? And also for something mid back? I get so irritated sometimes because I live in a more rural area but people bring me in all these Pinterest pictures which I don't think they understand that those girls are either hair models or pay like $500+ not including extensions for their hair and don't realize how much work this really is and how expensive our products are... it's like girl I'm spending 3-6 hours sometimes more with you + cost of product + cost of my booth rental and they think it's going to be like $100... girls be trippin! I've recently raised my prices but it's still not enough. I live in California and i do Bay Area work and they are expecting an at home price and it's really frustrating. Do you have any tips for me for what I can tell them when they complain about the price? I've honestly gotten to the point now where I'm like then go to that place that charges you cheaper then because I guarantee they will be back when I have to color correct their hair 😂
@RobertoRiosbiz5 жыл бұрын
Taylor Goss Rule of thumb You charge according to the area if you’re living in a very wealthy area you can charge a lot of money since you are using high-end products and taking your time to do a fantastic job if your salon is located in an area where income is low you have no choice but to charge according to what they’re able to afford.

So as far as the sectioning goes, when you are baby lighting like that, roughly how thick or thin is each individual section? And on a prior video.... or maybe a later video not sure, you wipe the fools and start an olaplex treatment, do you just do the mask or start the No. 2?
@justjessiiii6 жыл бұрын
Usually they are thick enough where you can still see the tail end of your comb through the section, and then slicing the top of that! So they do end up being pretty thin!! It is olaplex no. 2!
