Hi Judy. Thank you for Anneke. For me she's my favorite singer. Her voice is so powerful and emotional too. With her band The Gathering she was a precursor in "atmospheric metal". Floor Jansen (Nightwish, After Forever), Sharon Den Adel (Within Temptation) and Simone Simmons (Epica) brought a lot to metal. Thanks for sharing

Beste Zangers (14 seasons) is a Dutch reality television show. In each series a number of well-known performers alternate as the central artist who picks songs out of their own repertoire (or favorite song) to be sung by the others. The original performer (sort of, but also not) judges the "covers" of their songs (own or favourite ones) done by the participants.

Nice first reaction Judy! To answer your questions wrt 'Beste Zangers', let me focus on the translation of that show's name: 'Dear Singers'. It also translates as 'Best Singers', but the concept is focussing on singing songs most dear, meaningful or in any other way relevant to their colleagues. Each episode one of the singers and their life story is central and connecting all the performances of the other six singers who each perform a dedicated, often quite customised, version of a song special to the singer in the spotlights. No competition, just singing, music and the love they share for it all. Great concept, great show. Now on Anneke, often referred to as 'god-mother of dutch female metal singers' or (as Devin Townsend calls her) 'Metal Tinkerbell': that's quite a rabbit hole to explore. Let's just first say that her voice is a one in a million, with her controls topping many scales and her tone and timbre definitely unique and very recognisable. Both a haunting siren and an enchanting fairy. You mentioned you'd want to hear Anneke sing in a similar setting as the world has come to know Floor sing in ... well, although Anneke started as lead singer of a doom/gothic/proto-symphonic 'metal' band back in 1995, which inspired many female vocalists in generations to follow, both that band (The Gathering, the band she left in 2007) and their and her music did evolve, a lot. The band moved from gothic metal to proggy/alt trippy rock while Anneke fronted them ('95-'07). And Anneke has touched upon almost any genre imaginable ... except opera I guess. With Anneke, The Gathering produced 6 studio albums and 4 live dvd's, all of which were highly acclaimed. Without Anneke, The Gathering also produced some very interesting material, going from doom metal in the early 90s to very progressive trippy rock to this day. Wiki knows. Now, once you've digested that, you may also wanna explore two more rabbit holes connected to Anneke's, namely those of Devin Townsend and Arjen (Ayreon) Lucassen. These are two hugely talented musicians in prog metal with each having produced numerous unique musical projects. Different, but equally enjoyable imo. And Anneke worked with them both on various occassions. Hey Judy, great reaction as always. The show is all about. Just put a bunch of singers together and let them sing songs a particular singer likes or wrote themselves. Each episode of this show one of the singers is put in the centre, in this case it was Karsu's turn, just like Anneke did here, all the other singers on the couch sang a song Karsu herself wrote or liked. And each of them tried to give their own twist on them. Hello - Joel the DJ here... The issue you raise is legitimate. Our research wasn't perfect on the origins of this cover of the song. I have trimmed the reference from our intro mentioning Kursu. This was our research, and not knowing the origins, we were mistaken in saying that. I am sure that Aneke and Beste Zangers show had permission from Mustafa Sandal - the error was ours.
