The lich succeeded in his goal but then what? It does make sense. Remember what prismo said in the original show? "the lich's primary function is to cause mass death. But since he can't do that while trapped in my time room he shut down. Like a machine without a purpose" that's exactly what happened here. He killed everyone. He can no longer cause death. So he just shut off.

I think that also kind of broke his illusion had of himself, I think he genuinely believed he was a machine serving Golb, up until he accomplished it and had the brutal truth about his apparent delusions

I think the reason that The Lich was depressed was because he already killed everyone, and so now he has no purpose. (Also, I've seen people mention the whole "Scholar of Golb" thing to be written in last minute, but they actually said that in the first episode that The Lich was ever in!) This is never said in the show, but I have a small theory that the reason the Lich's eyes were glowing green a bit when the portal thing was happening was because he was planning to follow them into Simon's head so he could do it all again, but then that other thing happened at the end and shit is wild.....

This isn't just a lich that won btw. Remember back in season 4 when we first met prismo? When the lich wished all life to be extinct? Prismo said he did it. Finn and jake survived cause they were in the time room obviously. When jake wished to change the lich's wish that actually created another universe where that happened. But the universe the lich's wish created still exists. That's why ice king just suddenly turned into a skeleton. That's the wish taking effect. It's a very cool detail. NOT A SPOILER BTW. This is just what fans have deduced

Cake being angry with Fiona does makes sense. With Fiona being traumatized by getting people killed she’s lost some self confidence in herself and her ability to protect others. She pretty much stoped Cake from grabbing the crown in Vampire world cuz she was too afraid. Cake would of had the time to snatch it if Fiona didn’t delay her, so she feels kinda frustrated that she didn’t trust Cake enough to do her thing. Also, if YOU where a lich and managed to kill everyone in the world, wouldn’t you feel depressed that there is no one els to kill and your left with nothing els to live for?

I personally think that everyone's actions adds up considering the entire show is essentially all three characters going through an existential crisis and the way they move through their plotlines actively strains someone else's. Simon is a man displaced in time outside of the familiar world he knew and also actively thinks about a time where he technically was worse off but living that way was easier because he wasn't as aware as he was now. Fionna actively feels that something is wrong and yearns for an answer to what she's supposed to be doing as well as some sort of break in monotony. Cake, arguably has a lighter arc about navigating her own new autonomy. She can speak now and also move as easily if not easier than a human, pairing that with a cat's innate individualism naturally she'd be more lightheaded about everything. to Fiona, yeah her cat is awesome but that's still her cat and as she gets disillusioned with the lifestyle she thought she wanted that she's actively chasing now, obviously she'd be more tense. She just accidentally jeopardized several worlds in a misguided attempt to chase what she feels she's been missing without considering repercussions. She's living an isekai fantasy essentially where instead of being the most overpowered hero in the universe she's just some woman with all the powers of being just some woman. Meanwhile Simon, who's essentially on a pseudo-s****de mission is willing to throw away his life to be ice king not only because it's easier in his eyes but also due to a lack of self worth due to being so displaced. No one is like him mentally, he's not a post apocalypse human, he's a roadside attraction at best. The one person he'd consider like him is now a chaos god and untouchable. Finn tries to help in one of the first Simon episodes by getting him not to think about it but Simon can't just not think about it. It's actively happening. It's hard to grieve yourself when you're still living. Anyway tldr: idk I think the show holds up when considering how near impossible it is for everyone to get the end result they started out hoping for without someone else getting upset when looking at how the characters think and act. Cake is independent but unserious, Fionna and Simon are both depressed and seek to fill a void they acknowledge is there but while Fionna seeks adventure Simon seeks escape and now that they know each other well enough they can't all get what they wanted at the beginning and all be happy about it.

Simon used "evil" Choose Goose as a spell battery, and although the specifics of what he needs exactly are unclear, that's why he used the Lych for another ritual at the end

I think the your commentary on the show has been valid. This really was more a story about Simon than Fionna and I can get why it didn't live up to expectations. (I still loved it, but no hate that you're not enjoying it as much as other people did. lol) I am hoping season 2 is going to be more about Fionna's world and not as much about multiverses, but getting glimpses of these other universes wouldn't upset me. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for you to find out who Jerry was and it was worth seeing your realization on why everyone was gone. I was surprised you caught the skeleton, but not Fionna looking at the drum set and the audience POV seeing what was in it.

11:05 While Finn had all the time to become a hero, Fionna only lived with humans (who are not as well known for being the most empathetic beings) and, in a new world in a new reality, she cannot understand that creatures, even the ones made of candy, have emotions and are living beings too. She didn't have a journey to become a hero like Finn, I think that takes time. Just like Princess Bubblegum was a Fascist and became less Facist as time went on.😂😂😂😂😂

The tape in the ice kingdom showed Ice King putting the crown in the drum set, which is why the camera lingers on the drum when the scene ends and they start to walk away.

That Lich is the first Lich of the main universe which arrived with Prismo and wished for the extinction of all life at the beginning of season 5, that's why he still had Billy's body, BMO says: "one day everyone was a skeleton, then Jerry came" basically the Lich's wish was applied, everyone in that universe dying instantly like Ice King and Gunter and then The Lich appeared after having disappeared from Prismo's room

I respect your opinion, but I think you're trying to compare the original's approach with F&C's approach. The two shows have a different "spirit" and F&C chose develop the main characters and the other characters around at the same time. And i think they're not showing as much cause they don't want to deliver everything at once and leave it for the next season (which has already been confirmed btw). I think this is very valid because, unlike the original, F&C it has a story with more connection between the episodes and less of anthology (even though the original became more like that over the years) and there's still a lot of time to develop both. The original had 10 seasons with MUCH MORE EPISODES IN EACH, ESPECIALLY THE FIRST SEASON and this is still the first.

I think we were all wrong about the Lich and what they actually were, even the Lich itself. They weren’t some machine of murder, at best he was some death/chaos religious zealot who was the most dead set on his own goals that he believed himself to be an unfeeling machine of murder despite the signs of him expressing emotions like frustration, and joy or being prideful and gloating over successfully tricking him. I think once he actually won, reality hit him. He was wrong. He believed so strongly that he was this one thing, but he just wasn’t.

Hey Lu do you still think Bonnie in 1x7 was bad? If so why? Bonnie was trying to save all of humanity from the vampires. If it seemed she didn't care that Martin and Huntress died, I think she did. They all had the that dynamic where they know they can die at any moment. AN dyou can't blame Bonnie for attempting to kill Marcy

Haha not really, I was just playin - I mean good and bad are hard to tell in this world theoretically though. Who am I to say who is ethically more justified in their situation. The vampires are clearly being depicted as the villains though, I just speculate other things for fun

I feel like you're either being unreasonably hard on this show.. or don't know as much about the lore as you think ^^U not to be mean but Fionna has been acting believably the entire show. She was an awful person but that's the point. She literally didn't see the alt timelines as real until she watched one die in front of her, at which point she became very cautious about them, especially relating to Cake; which is trouble because at the exact same time, Cake has only just come into her own with her powers.

Eh, agree to disagree. I'm not trying to just blindly like it because I liked the original, I'm here for an honest review. *Don't get me wrong I like the show just fine - but I'm trying to give a balanced view of pros and cons while watching it for the first time* It's not that she's too awful, it's more that she isn't interesting. If she were more awful actually, that would be more interesting. My critique of her and cake isn't really that they're not believable, it's that their characters seem to mostly exist just for the show to exist and for other characters/worlds to be explored. I'm not invested in their story, I only care about Simon and other side characters we've ran into along the way. And we should care about arch of the main characters of the story.

I'd argue that the Litch being depressed tracks with the original show. When the Litch got trapped in Prismo's time room after Jake changed his wish, he just shut down because he had no way of fulfilling his purpose. He only snapped out of it when an opportunity to escape presented itself. In this universe he won, but he still ended up without a purpose. Worse yet, he won, but has nothing to show for it.

You just make so many claims like "that doesn't make sense," which are things that DO make sense, you either just didn't catch stuff or don't remember from the OG show 🙄 Is this show perfect and without issue? No, but you can't miss things like Fionna finding the Ice Crown and then claim it "doesn't make sense!" or say that Cake's tension "came out of nowhere" when it literally showed you where it started in a previous episode. It's frustrating, but cute Pokemon meme.
