JESUS AND BLACK METAL / Pastor Bob's Coffee Break

Dear Pastor Bob: How is it possible that God is ok with distortion guitar, loud thundering drums and harsh, loud, intense singing and shouting/screaming? Looking at the nature of Jesus which is loving, gentle, humble and He also has the qualities of the other fruits of the Spirit, I’m finding it hard to be ok singing with such intensity and ferocity. Are we maybe wrong here? How do you sing a worship song to God shouting and screaming? Let’s say I write a song about adultery and I convey it intensely as I feel it should be, can I see this as Jesus delivering the consequences through the music and my voice is basically His? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Thank you Pastor Bob for this message as I felt this was something that I've been needing to hear as of lately my Earthly parents aren't exactly fond of me listening to the heavy metal genre even if it's Christian metal!! It's gotten very old and tiring some having the same old discussion over and over, if you or anyone who reads this comment please be praying for them as well as myself. Also I like to add in that you are so spot at 3:50, 5:45 to 6:04. Especially at 3:50 as I can relate to this a lot as my current church seems to use the same song over and over that's gotten very old and dull in my opinion. Thanks again for a fantastic message you've shared with us. May God continue to bless you and your ministry in the heavy metal scene.

Psalm 150, perfect! Well said!! Some thoughts I'd like to inteject: Jesus sent his Disciples out in pairs to bring the gospel to the ppl where they were. He didn't send them out to build buildings for quiet church mouses to hang in. He told them clearly, that if they're not accepted, then just shake the dust off the feet & move along. (Noting that He didn't tell them how loud or how quiet they should or shouldnt be). In short summary, the disciples were asked to greet the ppl where the ppl where the ppl hung out. They were not told to change their styles to suit the ppl.

Interestingly enough... The night I met my wife (first time) I told her, "I'm into some weird stuff... you may not have heard of it... its called UNblack metal." So I proceeded to play her "Rites of Death" from Antestor.... We have been married 17 years in Oct and every time I mention it or play it she remembers our first date where the "crazy metal" guy won her heart. Once again you nailed it Brother!! God created the full spectrum of colors, just like He created the full spectrum music, food, and cultures. God created so much diversity because they all are able to reflect His glory!! I just saw an interview with Alice Cooper reflecting on his relationship with Glen Campbell. Musically, they were completely different genres of music Alice in Rock/Metal, and Glen in Country Music, but they were they were the best of friends. Both were brothers in Christ, so they could relate there as well. They loved and appreciated each other’s differences as well as their common ground in Christ. So, please even if you’re not a big fan of something appreciate the difference God has inspired and created through us. Especially, if we’re bringing glory to God through it. Just some comments from the peanut gallery. 😊

I've commented on a similar topic before, so here is an abbreviated version. Like analog tv/radio, the music is merely the carrier signal to get the message to the reciever. Some people, like myself, are tuned into metal, so this form helps me recieve The Word most clearly. The most important thing is to listen to what helps you receive God's message the clearest whether it be metal, gospel or contemporary. If something brings you truly closer to God, then it cannot be evil.

What Christ suffered during the procession to Golgotha and ultimately on the cross is more intense and brutal than any black metal or brutal death metal you can listen to.

This is not how the Holy Spirit works …you must have the Holy Spirit to be called a child of God. Your old life dies and your new life begins, with all things becoming new. It’s not about what we want or what we like brother. …pick up your cross and die to yourself daily. I was into metal and I loved collecting movies, but now, I don’t have that desire to watch the kind of movies I use to watch or even play the kind of music I use to play…ask the Holy Spirit to show you the truth, and to guide you.
