Hope you like the sounds I'm making. Of course, most flugel players are "trumpet players in disguise," but for what it's worth, I do try to play the instrument in a distinctly different way. For me, it's closer to a woodwind instrument. I like to play like an English Horn player, or maybe oboe, or maybe saxophone.

What a beautiful flugel sound! As a flugelhorn player myself, it often hurts me when I hear a trumpet player being capable of letting a flugel sound like a trumpet. You make it sound like it should be, warm, soft and mellow!

Thanks, sir. I try to play it as if I’m playing English Horn (for classical) and alto saxophone (for jazz/pop/commercial). Sometimes, if it’s being used as a horn, I’ll strip the vibrato and play darker. I think a lot of people get too swept up in playing with a dark sound. It has its place, of course, but there’s a whole spectrum of tone colors and the brighter ones are livelier.
