Jesus’s Yoke | Rabbis and Disciples Pt 8 | EP124

In the final episode of our series Rabbis and Disciples Pt 8: Jesus’s Yoke, Brad Gray helps us overcome the age-old problem of becoming too familiar with the Bible. When we’re too familiar with a passage of Scripture, we start believing we already know what it means. In doing so, we forget there’s so much more it has to teach us, and we rob it of its explosive power to transform our lives. Believing we already know what the Bible means is the fastest way to become resistant to its wisdom.
This is why this episode tackles one of Jesus’s most well-known sayings. Because when you set Jesus’s words from Matthew 11:28-30 in their historical and cultural context, an entirely new and challenging picture emerges. As a Jewish Rabbi, Jesus frequently utilized a teaching technique called Remez, which means “hint.” His words in Matthew 11:28-30 are hinting at other passages of Scripture his audience would have been familiar with in order to make a new and powerful point. We’ll explore what’s behind hints like, “Come to me,” “I will give you rest,” and “my yoke.”
Because once you understand these hints, you realize Jesus is making a bold and audacious claim. A claim no other rabbi ever made. It’s a claim that is deeply challenging and utterly compelling. In Rabbis and Disciples Pt. 8: Jesus’ Yoke, we’ll have to answer Jesus’s question: “Will you empty yourself of yourself and let me fill you up?”

so thankful to have found these resources! They are a great blessing! It seems we have gotten so far from the real Jesus, the Jewish Jesus. He is so patient with us. But after watching this series and the one on Jesus and Galilee I am asking myself if I have been a true disciple of Jesus? Or whether I just knew about him. It seems like we have gotten so much from the gentile world in us, so much pride against our jewish roots, that we have missed so many blessings. Paul the apostle warned us against becoming proud towards the original olive tree, the root that is upholding us. This teaching has shown how truly meek and lowly Jesus is. He has become softer in my eyes, and I am so thankful that I am living under His authority! May we be one, Jew and Gentile, once again and so fulfill the great comission in a more powerful way!

I never realized about these connections with this verse. I remember the phrase Jesus Christ spoke, referring to Himself when He said, "I Am". Then the Pharisees criticized Christ for blasphemy. However, I'm glad you helped me dive deeper into the Scriptures and have helped me understand the Culture and significance of Christ's words. My Yoke, i.e.: "My Kindom, My Law and Commandments, and ultimately, My Wisdom" - Jesus Christ. (P.S. Thanks for this correction. 😊👍)

Very interesting video brother. I'm curious then to know how Yoke being used by Peter in Acts 15:10-11 and Pauls usage of it in Galatians 5:1-2? Do you belive the yoke in these instances that are considered bondage is obedience to the torah?

Great and insightful question. In both of those texts (the Acts council and the Galatians debate), the context seems to be about how to handle the Gentiles. Are Gentile followers of Jesus required to adopt the Jewish identity markers of Torah keeping (circumcision, kosher, etc.) in order for their faith to be complete? This is very enlightening. It's amazing that Jesus Christ overtly called the Scriptures His Scripture. I just want to know why you referred to the Isaiah passage as post-exile. Isaiah was active in a time prior to the exile. Are you an adherent to the two Isaiahs theory?

Hi Joy, thank you for your comments! I referred to the Isaiah passage as post-exilic because it falls within Chapters 40-66 that reflect a time period after the exile. Now, whether Chapters 40-66 were prophetically written by Isaiah in his lifetime or were written by his disciples following the exile is a matter of debate. And BibleProject does an outstanding job of laying out the options for interpretation in their video here: bibleproject.com/explore/video/isaiah-40-66/. Personally, I think it makes more sense that Chapters 40-66 were written after the exile, but that's just my take on this particular subject matter. Thanks!

Jesus is comparing the Torah to the Halakah of the Pharisees that continues after 11:30 in 12:1-8. The Torah is light compared to the heavy burdens of additional rules (Matthew 23:4).
