Honestly, as a Christian, Im honestly so tired of church and the other things including it. Jesus is great and I love him but his people really arent. All these opinions they carry about sexuality and women really have me hanging on by a thread.

@@WilliamAfton984I’m a Christian in a similar boat as you. I’m interested to know what u mean when u say the opinions of women in the church. I’m brushed up on a couple of verses regarding women but I’m not too familiar.
@WilliamAfton984
@WilliamAfton984 10 ай бұрын
@@xpertrex5991 Well, my church is really one of the less problematic ones when it comes to women. But they still think women can't be leaders of men, nor "pastors". We are also told as females that we are responsible for mens actions, such as "We are supposed to raise great men to lead" It just feels like we should sit idley by and let men do all protecting and providing, when this isn't the case and we should be leading together, not have one behind the other.
@WilliamAfton984
@WilliamAfton984 10 ай бұрын
@@xpertrex5991 But we're also told we have roles to play. I have heard a lot of times that girls in the church have to also be an example of femininity, and in this context would basically be polite, encouraging and letting men lead in certain things. These aren't necessarily bad things in itself, but it is only pushed onto women from my experience. Not to mention we are deemed as physically inferior, which yeah might be true in a lot of places but it is honestly disheartening to look at a man and think that I couldnt fend for myself. As females we have the idea of gender pushed onto us so much, and churches usually forget that different personalities exist and it is not just two genders that have two different roles. We're all so vastly different and one can be the nuturing type and the other can be the more headstrong. Or even both. I might have a bias because I kind of loathe being a girl myself, but being told that I have to sit by and let the men take care of the harder things and provision, it makes it so much worse. not to mention theres family members whom I know that are very misogynistic but carry out to be "Christian". Yet their thoughts are completely false. But even hearing those things and them being justified is terrible, and sometimes I even think being a girl is much more of a curse then a blessing. This might not only be the churches fault, but they definitely help with this. Especially when using scripture (usually taken out of context) .

Agreed, not being neurotypical or able-bodied isn't a disease to be cured. It can cause issues or be a problem in of itself, but it isn't a flaw. grew up in nigeria as a catholic and long story short it’s one of the most homophobic countries in the world for a reason. the religious haze is so thick and people there are so convinced that their beliefs are the truth (yes, my parents included), that visiting home suffocates me. i never knew true freedom until i went to canada for 12th grade. it was incredible. i had the space to make friends and address my concerns without fear of someone i knew finding out and tattling to my parents. the ppl i did know from home were usually in the same position or at the very least respected my privacy. and man, i never knew that “love” until i came to terms with my queerness, and engaged more and more w those queer & deviant spaces. i never felt listened to, much less related to anything until i discovered these things existed. it makes me so sad that i was on track to be as intolerant as my family and ppl back home, even with my doubts and concerns. i just didn’t know the alternatives were this easy (its not that easy but it’s easier than i believed for years. that cognitive dissonance was a real bitch for a while though). it’s so difficult having been atheist since my first year of uni, and its been abt 5 years and counting. hearing them lecture at me abt america losing god and the lgbtq community and misogynistic bullshit while somehow still being aware of feminism… god… anyways. i appreciate this. i keep coming across these typa videos and it’s like i just can’t stop infodumping in comments. i’ve been scrolling through the comment section and once again, i feel understood through all these people who share similar negative experiences with the church. sending love to everyone ❤

I was raised Jewish, and it was such a violent shock to hear that the Christian version of the second coming involved so much death and destruction. That’s why more and more people (myself included) are turning away from Christianity. All that pressure to “live the life of Christ” to a tee is what gives so many people trauma and fucks them up mentally. It’s just not worth it and would rather live life without that big of a burden.

I was raised christian and went to these 'retreats' occasionally where they sunrise to sunset made you converse about Jesus, but we always had some sort of "cry night" where people were supposed to be vulnerable and open up about their past traumas in front of everyone, sometimes in front of strangers. Mine divided us into smaller groups, and because my actual friends were all in my group, I fell for it. Only recently I discovered this phenomena is common in youth groups across America to brainwash teens into worshipping Jesus through talking about your trauma. Is that not the most cult-y thing you've ever heard?

@@linyoungpai4519 I've not done much research in the Quran, but that's really interesting to me! I think that's an issue I see a lot with folks, people seem to either fall into believing prayer alone cures stuff, or believing it to be an aid, not a cure. It helps ensure treatment will work, allows you to recover quicker, or just generally is a sort of good luck charm to pray in times of sickness, but it's not going to cure you. I'm saddened to admit how many people seem to have passed on from things like COVID thanks to the view that they'll just pray it away if they catch it. No one close to me, but a not minute number of folks. I'm sorry your mom is thinking that way. I can't even begin to imagine how frustrating that must be. My closest experience was my mom treating the fact I'm trans as a "phase" but even she got past that after I started HRT and she saw the tremendous results and how bad I was suffering in silence. It's not at all the same, but my point is that I can empathize with the frustration of a parent not taking you seriously in times or topics of weakness/illness. I hope you nothing but the best, kind stranger. You seem like a lovely person.

Spiritual people are sometimes so detached from reality, to think the answer to these very WORLDLY problems is “turn to X or Y (spiritually) :)” is just.. no. Why. Therapy works. I was raised Christian and still got a mental illness before middle school, the two are completely unrelated, religion didn’t cause or heal my mental illness. My mom always said God gave us medication for a reason, to help us. We have medication and therapy for a reason. Honestly, I do think people need both, one or the other isn’t enough. It doesn’t need to be “therapy” but someone you trust, someone to talk to, someone that listens to you. Therapist, counselor, nurse, whatever, as long as they’re there for you. At some point maybe that isn’t enough and you need an actual therapist, but just *someone* can help you get through until that.

What always gets me is so many christians don't realize, even IF their god were real, that wouldn't make him worthy of worship. Proving he exists wouldn't be enough to make him a god worth following. If their god has allowed his children to suffer, has let people grow sick and die as some "test", has condemned souls to eternal torture for mortal and temporary sin-- he is a maniacal, egotistical, hateful creature that deserves condemnation. He is no god worthy of devotion. If you follow anyone or anything only because you fear repercussions, that is not love.

I was NOT pleased to hear this... I remember distinctively saying "Oh... but we do that all the time here. Sounds really similar to my experience. I was raised in an apostolic Pentecostal church that felt like a cult. I had a lot of questions growing up and they were always half ass answers. During one of the women group teachings (I was 16 at the time) we were told not to wear makeup, jewelry, wear revealing clothes, some of us not to cut our hair, or else we were 'jezebels.' At 16, I was living with my mom, so at this moment I was visiting my dad (my mom had sole custody of me and my siblings, and also I was very fond of makeup and my mom, siblings and I didn't go to church anymore) so you can imagine how that sat with me. Once in daycare, which was run by the church as well...I went and got something my teacher told me not to. She said "God will cut your toes off" and my smart ass said "they are still there!" I don't follow any religion now because I have had some other experiences but yeah, it was basically a cult and I hated every minute of it lol.

All it took was her negative reaction to me coming out as bi (and turning it into a conversation about religion) to say, “nope, this is not a community I want to be a part of.”

I was raised Christian and was practically brainwashed until I agreed to be baptized at eight- when I was a child, who knew nothing other than the adults were telling me I'd live in eternal pain and suffering if I didn't let an old man hold me under water. When I was 12, I stopped believing because if there was a god like the Christians pushed, why wouldn't he save my mom? Why did she suffer so much on Earth that she took it upon herself to end her life? And then on top of that, she was damned to eternal suffering because she couldn't take it while she was alive??? Yeah, no. My parents beat me and verbally abused me, took away all privacy (they'd even watch me shower), burned all my notebooks, etc. until I pretended I was saved again. They used the Bible to hurt me and scare me and justify years of abuse, even outside of that time period. It was disgusting. I've known some true Christians, who love and accept and help all without condition. My grandma knew my Older Sibling and I were queer and she took our partners in like they were her own. My grandfather knows I'm queer and polyamorous and has accepted all of my partners with loving, open arms. He's never once seen me as anything other than his baby girl, it's never mattered if he understood or agreed withy lifestyle, he's always accepted me for me. That's what being a real Christian looks like. I don't know how my parents got so fucked up, but the religious trauma is real.

Seriously, the people who say "Get over it, it was a long time ago" about enslavement, are the same who still cant get over the murder of Jesus. Even though he resurrected.

so my family (not including my parents) got into a bad accident while on vacation. we unfortunately lost my aunt who i had just met that month. it was extremely traumatic. it made me so mad when my mom and my family would say “God does everything for a reason”, there was absolutely no reason why my aunt had to pass away. She was in a lot of pain beforehand and she decided to let go. When we came home, my dad was telling me (he’s an atheist) that a couple years ago, he was working w a man who constantly asked him why he didn’t believe in god, and then said to him, “one day god will try you and you will start believing in him”. When the car accident happened to us, he started to think to himself, “was that man right? does god exist and this is the way he’s showing me?” but then he said “i don’t want to believe in a god who wants me to fear him in order to believe in him. that “god” put my kids in danger and caused me to lose my sister”. i eventually had to get surgery and after being 6 weeks on crutches, i can finally walk tomorrow. this “god” didn’t heal me, my doctor healed me. but hearing “god does everything for a reason” during all of this, has made me so mad.

Good for your dad honestly! I think spirituality can be great if that’s a personal choice, but when so many people use fear and threats of eternal misery to try and force people it’s just sick. Especially how often it’s done to children. Also, hope your recovery went smoothly, and I’m really sorry for your loss.

True story: my mother brought me to a hotel conference room where a church was congregating, they believed you can get rid of the evil inside you by getting physically sick, like coughing, spitting, PUKING!!!!! People were throwing up in buckets- it was like mass hysteria! And it all seemed "normal" at the time. Fk my childhood lol

Oh my that sounds awful!! To add on to that horrid theme, the church I was raised in had a youth group event called the 36 hour famine, where you would get together with the youth group for a weekend to help serve or clean up at a local church camp. Why is it called the 36 hour famine you may ask? Because during those 36 hours, you were not allowed to consume anything other than water. No nourishment while doing free hard labor!! And get this, after the event was over, they would have a huge pizza party and people would get sick afterwards from overeating so soon after they starved themselves. They said it was a way to "get closer to God" because every time you felt hungry, you were supposed to think of God. Or something like that.

@@AshaSara we just talked about this in my theology class! he flipped the tables of the people overcharging for sacrificial animals because they were defiling the Temple with commerce and classism. the poorer people were unable to afford the "pure" animals and so they were seen as less worthy to be forgiven with the sacrifice they gave.
