As someone who has studied theology for years, "saying his name in vain" doesnt refer to saying "oh my god" it actually applies to fear mongering! Saying things like "god will send you to hell" and "god hates you" is taking his name in vain as it's claiming something evil under his name. THAT is a 'sin', not saying "oh my god". It's so funny bc its so hypocritical. In reality by saying that stuff YOURE the one taking his name in vain!

as someone that grew up in christianity, one thing that irritates me about “don’t say god’s name in vain” is that it’s always misinterpreted as “don’t say oh my god”, rather than how it’s supposed to be used which is: “don’t weaponise God’s name and use christianity to enforce your own agenda”. Like you can evangelise as much as you like, but don’t cherry pick, ask to talk about it, and don’t expect everyone to love you for being an asshole on someone else’s Fortnite game.

well. christians telling people that is different because it says something about their own moral character... I was never religious but i faced religious abuse that did harm me. When christians told me i was going to hell I wasn't afraid of going to hell I was afraid of what people who believed that were willing to do. After all, if me being a lesbian means I will be tortured forever then they could justify any abuse to 'fix' me, because any amount of suffering inflicted upon me was justified because by its very nature it was in their minds the lesser of two evils. No matter what they'd do even if it included harm it could not be as bad as eternal torture... The church also focused on 'saving souls' and that dying people should not be given medical treatment and food etc (or at least it should not be a priority) that was not as important as telling them about god because at least their souls were saved. That's the true horror in that kind of a mindset to me

Think of it like a good parent in a way- your kid does something you perceive as bad, you’re disappointed and want them to improve but it’s not like you disown them and throw them in a ditch or something. I think people would view religious people in a better light if they saw the good people and saw good priests, instead of the people just saying angry horrible things on the internet and using religion as an excuse for bullying others. In our religion we’re taught to respect everybody even if they do sins, and not attack them.

@@danaenae They were saying that this man, who doesn't appear to be a pastor or a priest or have any authority in the Church, does not have the right to tell random people where they end up after death when they clearly didn't ask to be told that and he doesn't know who they are outside of this game. And anyway, he doesn't decide where people go after death, neither do priests. That is for God to do, and I personally doubt he would send someone to Hell just because they didn't believe in Him the way Christians do.

as a christian: that moment when kurtis said “i thought christianity was chill” and did the whole love thy neighbor skit is literally most christian churches. last sunday, my church in conservative washington had a buffet for new years and didn’t even talk about god, we just ate food. my pastors daughter is alternative and has bright red dreadlocks and face piercings, our pastor compared coca cola having cocaine to jesus’s love for us, and one of the kids ministry leaders is neurodivergent and has a daughter with down syndrome, so they have a separate area made incase her or her daughter is overstimulated or needs a break. but then there’s christians like the 12 year old boy on my bus who tried to break my arm when i erased a cross on the window because my muslim friend was uncomfortable and too shy to speak up. anyways love jesus and love buffet services, be a chill christian y’all.
