Hi, Can you get text verification to your phone when you’re outside the country? Like bank verification code

Great question. So far, when I’ve used it yes! Disclosure, I also have a Google Voice number, and I use that more often for verification. When that fails, then I’ll use my Google Fi number.

That 50GB limit is tough. I hit that once and the 2G cutback was torture.

True, true. If I had another option that offers the same or better benefits with a higher limit for the same or lower price, then it’d be a no brainer.

That is the biggest reason why I haven’t made the switch to google fi and I’m still researching options for international travel or digital nomad communications. I’m not planning to returning back to the US every few months but once a year or two. I need to keep a US number for banking and emergency contacts. So, as of now the search continues.

I transferred my number to Google Voice a few years back. So far, all has worked quite well. There’s a few times where Two-Factor Authentication hasn’t worked (text/call didn’t come through), so keep that in mind!

Why not use your home WiFi and Viber Tango? If you travel use the hotel's WiFi and Viber. Buying a dual sim-card phone for travelling is most important.

You didn't mention of the virtual esims, like Airalo, as an alternative. This approach, keeping my T-Mobile number active (makes texting easy) and using Airalo for data seems like a good combination. What do you think? Am I missing something?

Allow me to briefly recount my recent experience w/ Fi. My family and I went on holidays to Ireland, June 5th to July 3rd, halfway through our trip, June 20 they decided that my june 16th payment didn't go through. Then on the June 22, Fi decided my account wasn't secure enough and needed verification. So, on June 23 they put my account on "partial suspension". This means I could receive text and phone calls but nothing else, no internet, no GPS, no email, no Google services, PayPal, wallet, etc..., needless to say that while traveling in the rural parts of Co. Antrim this was extremely inconvenient. So, I filled out the requested info and verified my payment had gone through on June 14, then I was informed that the partial suspension couldn't be lifted until it was reviewed within the next 48 hrs. After 46 hours and many communications they finally lifted the suspension and sent an email declaring they were "pleased to announce the restoration of service to my account." They offered no apology, no explanation, no compensation or acknowledgement of the time, money, and travel interruption this arbitrary suspension cost me and my family, they still have not. This is not the Google I've come to count on. I will be cutting ties with Fi and other Google services as soon as this billing cycle is through.

Thank you for the helpful video. I have just added a google Fi number as an ESIM to my unlocked ATT iphone. I both needed a 2nd number here in the USA, but also want an phone plan/number I can use with unlimited data internationally. I am a bit unclear how to set the iphone settings, while traveling abroad, to ONLY use the GOOGLE FI number and NOT allow my ATT number to be active (so as to avoid their $10/day fee). Can you offer some help and hints here.. THANK YOU!

Great question. Easiest way would be to remove the ATT SIM card if it’s a physical card. If it’s a eSIM, I’d start by disabling “Roaming” for it in the settings…or better yet ask ATT customers service how to disable the roaming.

You can also actually go to setting/cellular/click on your att number and you will see the option to turn off your att number while keeping your Google fi number active
