I bought this lathe 5 months ago and have nothing but good things to say about it. Nice video , keep up the good work.

Nice review Chad! I'm looking to up grade my current lathe to a little heftier unit and your review helped a lot! I might mention, that the lathe is mounted a little higher than normal for everydayuse...maybe at elbow height would be more comfortable...but you probably already knew that... Anywho, thanks for the review and sharing it with us...safe turning always!

Good lathe, health to enjoy. I have the Jet1442 and recently converted it to 3 phase and variable speed which made a good lathe great. I have started to wax the lathe ways to help the banjo and tailstock slide easy and it definitely works better than the oil I used to use. Would making a longer handle to slide over the original on the tailstock make it easier to get at? Best Wishes, Brendan.

Would you recommend this for a beginner? I’ve used a lathe a handful of times, I am dying to get my own lathe. Just want one that I won’t “outgrow” too fast.

This is an older video and it was a good lathe for me while I had it for sure! My favorite lathe to recommend to folks currently is the Record Power Herald as it has a lot of features that make it good for beginners but also one that you can grow with as you progress in your making, and it is a good price for what you get. I turned on the Herald for several years and then upgraded to their bigger machine but almost everything I turn now could be turned on the Herald. If you are on a budget, a really good way to look for lathes is by joining your local woodturning club as folks are often upgrading and selling their used but perfectly good lathes. (you can also keep your eye on marketplace, craigslist, offer up etc) Watching/reading lots of reviews helps a lot too while you are deciding what lathe is right for you

@@ChadSchimmel would that be the 16006 that you are referring to for beginner lathes? Thanks for the input, my local wood turning club hasn’t had a sale yet, one coming soon so I am most definitely keeping that in mind as well!

This seems like a really good all around lathe. I dont want to buy a cheapo one so I think I will keep saving up for one of these.

Chad, gotta say I really enjoy your videos - I have learned a ton from you. Question... looking to upgrade to wither the Jet1221 or the Laguna1216. I have seen your reviews on both. Woodcraft has the Jet at $722.00and the Laguna comes in at $799.00 - both not with stands. I am primarily doing pens. How would you compare this to the Laguna? Really interested to hear your opinion. Thanks - Kevin

Hi Gus, thanks for the message, I will say 100% you will not be upset with either lathe they are both quality machines. I used the 1221 for over 5 years and liked it and I have been using the 1216 for over 2 years(and still use it) and like it. If I was picking right now I would go with the 1216, I find it to be quieter and smoother operation the way it is laid out. I also like the placement of the power and the dial better. Full disclosure I am a Laguna dealer but I would tell you if I liked the Jet better because that is how I am. Again you will not go wrong with either but that is my 2 cents.

Yes Craig I have done some large pepper mills and some bowls. It seems to handle everything that will fit on it very well. Lots of power Thanks

Do you think this lathe would be overkill for strictly shave brush handles?

Hi chad, i have the same lathe, does your variable speed knob feel loose (excessive side to side motion)? Mine has a good amount of play in it so was wondering if it was normal. Also i noticed there is a lock ring on the other side of the tail stock locking handle, do you think it could be removed with lock ring pliers and reversed? I'd like mine on the front too.
