Co-Pilots are trained as effectively as Pilots, and in some cases, they have performed the position of the opposite party. If the Co-Pilot says that the Pilot started randomly flipping things, then he probably did. Flight Attendants and Pilots go through an extremely intensive testing and training process, and Pilots get much more training than Flight Attendants. Not only that, but Pilots AND Co-Pilots have to get their Pilot's license before even getting employed with airlines, therefore all the training there comes into play too. These people are trained to know what an emergency is.

I list the cases: Japan Air Lines Flight 350 Royal Air Maroc Flight 630 SilkAir Flight 185 Air Botswana ATR 42 EgyptAir Flight 990 LAM Mozambique Airlines Flight 470 Germanwings Flight 9525 China Eastern flight 5735

Something interesting about this incident, the co pilot was able to save the day, by locking the Captain out of the cockpit. Earlier this year , the opposite result occurred, when the copilot locked the captain out of the cockpit, and purposely crashed the plane ( Germanwings flight 9525 ). We have yet to know what happened on the Malaysian flight that disappeared. Pilots have a high stress Job. we put our lives in their hands every time we fly, I understand that flying is the safest way to travel, but that is not excuse to not and try and make it even safer. we need to understand what made this Pilot snap, why after so many years of excellent service would he just snap. are pilots being over worked? is it sleep deprivation? could it be some medication he was on? - update I decided to do some research on this, seems the Pilot had a seizure from some left over traumatic injury as a child . he is current now has a lawsuit against Jet Blue, saying they should have noticed he was acting strangely , he missed the preflight meeting which he has never done, did not answer his cell phone and arrived disoriented that day.

+agriperma He's diabetic. Your comment actually makes you far too ignorant to be allowed to drive a car day to day let alone operate a commercial vehicle of any sort, who knows how many traffic laws you never bothered to learn and break every day. Your going to get someone killed that way. ...... The final bit of satire is to make it clear to anyone that ignorant discrimination no matter who the speaker or how well intentioned makes things worse not better. It has a good and a bad side as you can see here. There it saved them with the germanwings flight it killed them. Rules were adjusted so now a pilot can never be alone in the cockpit.
@Mortimer_Duke9 жыл бұрын
Changed TO what, precisely? So much constructive criticism from the peanut gallery about something so wrong yet so little better to suggest. As tragic as the Germanwings crash was, absolutely nothing suggests that adopting the U.S. standard of never allowing a single person to occupy the flight deck to all others' exclusion isn't wholly sufficient. If the world managed to every possible one in twenty millionth negative eventuality, it would grind to a halt. We already have the lessons learned from how the U.S. reacted to 9-11 by changing our ways of life and vastly giving up more freedoms than the perpetrators EVER could have imagined - only to be run over by a bus or hit on the head by a falling brick instead. Construct your own cocoon to insulate yourself from every conceivable negative possibility if you must. I refuse to live under it. Until then, you're welcome to drive wherever you need to go, but I believe that's even less safe than flying.
@nnelg81397 жыл бұрын
Andreaz Lubitz never changed that code. We know because the lock makes a noise when the code changes, and that noise wasn't on the CVR. Nor was the alarm made when someone tries to enter the cockpit using the wrong code. Regardless of whether you believe that the copilot deliberately crashed the plane or simply had a stroke, the fact remains that the captain didn't even try to enter the cabin using his code.

Copilot is a hero. Thank goodness there was another pilot on board who snuck into the cockpit with the copilot.
@twixeater19 жыл бұрын
+Missy Rabbit The co pilot could have landed the plane solo, even if their wasn't another pilot on board. Having the two of them just makes things a bit easier. Commercial jets are perfectly flyable with just one pilot, precisely BECAUSE they need to be so in case one pilot is incapacitated by illness, death (it has happened!), or in this case a mental breakdown. But yes, having that extra guy around was pretty handy from a pilot-convenience standpoint.
@Ryan-sw4xy9 жыл бұрын
+Biggus Richardus yes. it bothers me when news networks portray the first officer as some kind of apprentice, with less capabilities than the captain.

No, I am sorry, there is not two sides to every story. Sometimes, there just isn't an excuse. A man piloting a plane with innocent lives in his hands is expected to perform at 100% every time. No ifs ands or buts. Pilots suffering from mental illness should NEVER be allowed to fly a plane until they no longer have the condition. Otherwise, time to find a new profession.
@fhuber75078 жыл бұрын
Sometimes there's no symptom until the explosive mental collapse... Nothing for to report before the incident because nothing happened before.
@samhouston12888 жыл бұрын
Up until he had a full mental breakdown, there was no sign of mental illness, and it was probably a result of stress. There's not much you can do to prevent something like this, only train for when it happens. The First Officer handled this situation in probably the best way possible. He got him out of the cockpit and away from the controls.
@Eggemeyers8 жыл бұрын
Correct. However, self disclousure of a mental illness should never lose a pilot his job outright. If self reporting results in punitive action, no one will ever self report.
