Actually the best way to improve pull ups is get a chair or anything that would support a lot of your weight. Stand on it and use it to take some of the pressure of your weight off of your arms. Eventually after doing many of those you will get to where you can do actual pull ups with no assistance. If you have a buddy you can have them hold your feet from behind which helps take a lot of weight off your arms as well
