Today we travel back into the world of Panzer Front to look at another wacky vehicle. Last time we looked at the E-79 which is a somewhat more conventional vehicle. This is far from the case with the Aureole which is powered by two jet engines.

Hey Cone, I'm a big fan of the Fake Tank Series, and I was wondering if you could cover the Type 61 MBT from Mobile Suit Gundam, the tank not only has some actual MBT traits but it's very unique for an MBT to have Two Guns with a Caliber of 155mm Each plus a 3 man crew

The 75mm version is in the game, you have to go to the extra mission and replace a tank with it. The 75mm version has the 75mm StuK37 L/24 cannon and is painted dark yellow with full skirts. Also the E-79 has an early war version too. Panzer Front has a number of interesting extra missions including M1A1s vs T-80s

It might be used to help fight oil fires, but it was built to power wash buttoned up military vehicles to remove any trace of persistent chemical weapons, so the crews can safely exit them. Alternately, it can power wash a flight line of aircraft caught on the ground by persistent chemical weapons. Its first purpose was mass decontamination It is the ultimate, self-propelled power washer unit. If I recall correctly, the jet engines are repurposed from MiG-21 Fishbed aircraft

@@richardbell7678 No idea where you got this idea from, but the tanks shown were pure firefighting vehicles (or better said the "same" vehicle before and after replacing the T34 chassis with a czech made T55 variant and adding the second jet engine) and their construction makes ZERO sense in the context of NBC decontamination as it is designed to spray large amounts of water over an enormous area. Decontamination stations try to keep the contaminated substances under control, not wash them out over squaremiles of uncontrolled countryside.

If I understand it correctly, this tank is supposed to be propelled not by a turbine but by the thrust force of the engines. That however causes a huuge problem many other tanks, especially soviet tanks, also had, but far worse: an abysmal reverse speed.

Outside of the jet power, the design is like a Swedish S-Tank, Jagpanzer IV, and Jagpanther all got drunk one night...and this is the result. The low profile may help for ambush and stuff but doesn't seem to have great gun depression. Which, if maybe it could be hidden hull down, just the gun popping out with the sloped back armor/top hull to help deflect rounds, then maybe it'd make some sense as a design. Great vid Cone, love me Fake Tank Fridays and looking at the Panzer Front game.

The ones with the jet engines on top are firefighting vehicles, they used MIG-15 (and later I think 21) derived jets to blow out fires, mainly oil fires. At least one Hungarian example took part in fighting the oil well fires in Kuwait for example.

this kinda looks like something a person who got has no knowledge of tanks would imagine the strv 103 to be if it was described to them. "It's a very short, highly angled front hull with no turret and a large main caliber gun mounted in the front. The tank is surprisingly nimble and fast due to it's short track length. further more, it was the worlds first tank using a jet turbine to be issued to a military."

This reminds me of the BMW GT 101/102/103 project that the germans were supposedly developing during the war. tracks are made to be slower than any other movement method on purpose, the force required (and overall additioned fricton) to make the tracks spin just by pushing the tank externally is far greater than on wheels or anything that glides like planes, boats of skis in snow. all of that "resistance" would just send all that equivalent thrust backwards instead of pushing the tank forward. Im not even talking of tracks not being able to reach speeds jet turbines excel at. TLDR: tracks are made to be driven through rotation not through translation and external hull push and they cant go fast enough without wearing down so much.

Now, i only have very limited info on the tank mounted versions of the turbine extinguishers, but there are also several on a truck chassis, but most just with strong fans instead of jet-turbines. They are used to extinguish large industrial fires and fires in chemical plants, to bind dangerous gases and fumes, and (in the version that don't have the turbine) to evacuate smoke from tunnel fires. The first one you showed (Hurricane) is not even soviet, but from the FRG built on a leftover T55-A from the NVA. It was built to help extinguish the oilfires in Kuwait, but never used. the most common version is probably the LUF 60, but there are also many other versions. I think they are most common here in germany, at least i have never seen a firetruck-producer outside of the german companies build them.

I imagine it would be similar to the Abrams in terms of how loud the engine would be, which considering this would be a tank destroyer and would more than likely be used a flanking/ ambush vehicle it would probably not be ideal since being loud isn't ideal if you want to be sneaky. On top of that, it looks incredibly vulnerable to infantry attacks considering there's no front mounted machine gun port

Ehm, i've never ever heard the name Aureole, buuuut, it does look a LOT like a theoretical version of the AMX 50 Foch TD, which due to the severe lack of the desired gun was drawn up as an alternative that would use captured German 88L71(IIRC?) guns. From what i read, many years ago, this TD went well beyond the initial concept drawings, but not all the way to full blueprints. The issue with the guns were "solved" when they dropped the initial 90mm gun idea and instead fitted a 100mm gun to the Foch, making this variant instantly obsolete. And while i never saw anything about testing it with any form of jets, the French were very much playing around with a little bit of everything at the time, so it's not out of the question that someone could have drawn up something "outrageous". Might have be zero connection, or it might be the game makers read the same article i did, along with an article about jet/turbine engines in ground vehicles and just fluffed it together as they wanted it according to the rule of cool.

Did it have powered tracks if not why even have tracks. Also 1 plausible application is is blitz defense ausuming that it could reach a speed that whould seem reasonable with 2 massive jets

Let’s see, turbojet aircraft in WW2 had very short ranges due to fuel consumption, so a much, much heavier vehicle that also has to deal with ground resistance is somehow supposed to be practical?

Im assuming that by “jet powered” it means armoured vehicles propelled directly by the jet thrust and not, as is available with some modern armoured vehicles, having the drive train driven by a gas turbine engine instead of the more traditional diesel. I’m actually surprised at how long it took Wargaming to introduce “rocket propulsion” into World of Tanks, considering their propensity for taking ideas that were ill conceived or just plain ridiculous and shoe horning them into the game.

@ 2:30 you're completely wrong about the "anti-tank rifle plates" offering "limited protection due to the extreme spacing". In spaced armor, the biggest factor to determining efficiency is how large of a gap you can get between the plates. The bigger the gap, the more space and time you provide the projectile to tumble and deviate from its initial trajectory, striking the main armor at an oblique angle, which is the sole purpose of spaced armor in terms of defeating kinetic projectiles. In essence, there is no negative to having a bigger gap, only a smaller gap.

I wasn't referring to the spacing from the side of the hull I'm talking about the giant portion of the side armor left exposed with no plate

@@ConeOfArc appreciate the clarification cause in the video, to me, it sounded like that you were taking about the spacing and not the coverage.

Looks very much like a Jagdpanther yet use the gun mantle of a Jagdtiger, as least one thing is sure, you cannot fire the Aureole on the move.

I have a request if you don't mind. There is a Russian tank program I have seen on the internet called Teletanks, ehich were apparently fully radio controled T-26 tanks, with articles on Wikipedia and even Popular Science, yet the only evidence I personally could find presented for these was a single picture of a T-26 flame tank with an extra radio antenna, and a network of broken links, unreliable blogs, and tangentially related projects. To me it seems reasonable that such a tank project existed, but I haven't been able to find anything to confirm it myself. Additionally, according to the Wiki article and a few other blog style articles, the tanks weren't super reliable and rather expensive, so it could fall into the cursed by design or fake tank series, depending on if it actually existed or not, or if it is just another example of a game of internet telephone.
