I've had this same lathe for over 7 years and love it! I'm so glad you're getting into woodturning. It's the most fun I've ever had. There are so many areas to explore. I started making pens, then moved into bowls and lidded boxes. It's all so much fun. They all require you to learn different techniques, which makes it more fun. Everything I know I learned on KZbin. There are many wonderful channels to learn from. Have fun!!! 🙂

@@FlynndoggWoodwork Just searching "woodturning" will turn up loads of channels. A couple of the tried and true is Mike Waldt and Carl Jacobson. They have good beginner tutorials. I learned a lot from them. There are many more. It takes a lot of practice, but you get better fast. Have fun!

I have had a jet mini lathe for over 20 years and have never had a problem with it. I noticed in one of the comments about obtaining a chuck. My jet has a 8x1" thread head stock. Harbor freight makes a Baur four jaw chuck at a reasonable price, if you are interested. I recommend getting a 4 jaw chuck, not 3 jaw. I looked into it, but I already have two chucks with that thread size and decided I did not need three chucks for that lathe. At present I use that lathe mostly for turning pens, my Nova lathe I use for bowls and other large objects, I also have two chucks for that lathe which has a thread size on the head stock of 8x1 1/14 so they are not interchangeable. Have fun with the lathe, it can be an addictive hobby.

Thank you so much for the tips Pat! I really appreciate it. I think first on my list is to build a stand for it. I'm really interested in doing bowls so I think maybe the 4 jaw chuck may be a great idea. I need to check out HF soon. That nova is one that I would love to have. Love their drill press. Thanks so much for sharing and watching Pat, Really appreciate it!

Another on my ever-growing "some day" list. When you get a chuck, make sure to shoot a few seconds here and there with the key left in, well in the background and just in shot, while talking about something unrelated as if unaware. Matthias Wandel got about double the comments that way. 😁

A good lathe is a very fun and rewarding tool! Jet makes some good ones. Grab yourself a can of paste wax and protect the bed from rust. Also, my experience with that speed control was that it was touchy-small moves made big changes in speed, so be careful. Not as much a problem with a spindle, but can be catastrophic with a larger bowl.

That's pretty cool, Brian. Now let's take it to the next level. Put a large forstner bit in that fancy pants drill press you have, and make a hole to secure that candle better. Makes me nervous just sitting on top with the center of gravity so high. A coworker's son and family lost their home in a fire last year caused by a cat knocking over a candle. Fire bad!

A new lathe!! It took us long enough to get here. If you hadn't been buying so many tape measures you would have had enough money to buy the Rikon. Yet, you didn't go wrong with the JET, especially since you can get an expansion wing. It's a real feature having both head stock and tail stock included with the lathe; a lot of other machines don't include those key pieces. There's the woodpecker. Don't you determine the required RPM by the hardness of the material that you are turning, rather than the diameter (I don't really know, but I was figuring it was like the drill press belt adjustments)? You will find out where you need to put that machine in order to make clean up easy. Beautiful job, Dogg man. Who says you're a beginner. And, now with have nothing to grouse about.
@FlynndoggWoodwork
@FlynndoggWoodwork 3 ай бұрын
Haha! I know right! Maybe I should have gotten that rikon instead of those tape measures! :). Really like the fact that you can add the expansion wing easily. Super impressed with how solid this jet is when comparing it to that vevor. But I guess that is what you get when you pay 5X more! Great point on the rpms. I did a little research and it looked like most people adjusted the speed based on the diameter, but hardness would definitely come into play as well. I do know my beloved nova voyager only allows you to choose hardwood or softwood when changing out bits, so maybe it doesn't matter as much? Heck if I know! :). Maybe someone else who has more experience can chime in! This video was 100% for you meat! :)

Step away from the lathe they are extremely addictive!!!! Pens are quick and easy and a good use of scrap wood You might want a drill chuck for the tailstock, a scroll chuck for the head stock and a bullnose live center. As well as a set of calipers Remove the faceplate when turning between centers Harbor Freight has a very similar lathe for $550 as well as the above mentioned accessories I’ve has an older HF wood lathe for several years and turned hundreds of pens with out a hitch
