I’m a Pilot at JetBlue and I gotta say it makes me happy to see the mostly positive reaction in the comments! I used to fly corporate before I worked at JetBlue and when I was only a customer for me JetBlue always had the best experience for the price. Now to be in the front of the plane as an employee I’ve been really happy with the company overall!

How are you guys paid? I always wondered if there was a big difference or not between SW or Delta. You seem quite happy, and thats awesome. I worked in aviation as a maintainer and I have to say, I was miserable, though always did the best, up to all standards, but left once I was responsible for 30 jets, doing daily sorties, and it was me in a four man team. Tire changes, oil, preflight, post flight, the oddball repair, refuel, defuel. It was just too much work with too few people and this was in the military, where supposedly we had more stringent standards as far as MX. Still, I love aviation, and miss it. Never became a pilot, which was my dream job due to health problems (the kind that barely allows me to walk and drive, but suck is life and did amazing things in my career, so no regerts as they say lol). Keep the blue side up.

He missed a big thing on the rise. They had political help as it was very expensive to travel from upstate NY to downstate pre-2000. Most of what you flew were puddle jumpers at that. jetBlue connected Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse to downstate. It was a big thing, I used them whenever I could and told my bosses to do the same when they came upstate. This really helped them.

Also, they don’t need too much to fill their plane and still offer an international style business class. The issue is lack of planes preventing more expansion. At the same time, being based at JFK can be a curse.

My family always flies with JetBlue, and it made me love going on a plane. I have only been on a flight about 5 times, but there were never any problems during those flights. I feel like I remember the flight as much as the vacations. I don’t know why I enjoy it so much because basically everyone I know hates flying. I guess it’s just because it’s a rare moment in my life.

One thing to keep in mind is when JetBlue launched and took up residence at JFK, they had a ready made terminal/hangar to operate from, which formerly belonged to Tower Air (which Morris shut down months before - yeah, I worked for Tower and then JetBlue at the beginning). That's a HUGE savings at an airport of that size and stature.
@DaWolf805
@DaWolf805 9 ай бұрын
This is an extremely important, yet relatively unknown/unpublicized aspect of successfully starting an airline. One of the biggest costs is infrastructure, and being able to save on infrastructure by occupying hangars previously belonging to other airlines, bringing service to new airports where you can get politicians to pay for your setup costs, etc. are absolutely huge in making it through the first few years. This is what Breeze has failed at, more than anything else.
@Sacto1654
@Sacto1654 9 ай бұрын
JetBlue also had the support from New York Senator Charles "Chuck" Schumer, too. But at the time, JetBlue pretty much had much of the domestic traffic out of JFK to itself because much of the domestic traffic went through LaGuardia (LGA), a really unloved airport at the time. Today, JetBlue flies out of the former TWA terminal at JFK, which has been modernized specifically to accommodate the airline, but kept the original terminal building (which is a historic landmark).

Hearing anyone call it “The JetBlue Effect” without properly crediting the original airline disrupter, Southwest Airlines, first, makes my skin crawl. I worked for both companies. JetBlue’s effect on new cities pales in comparison to what Southwest does. Do some research. This video annoyed me from start to finish as it wasn’t well researched nor detailed as it should have been. David worked at Southwest! He tried to get company brass in Dallas to implement assigned seating. Southwest showed him the door along with his non-compete agreement. And, why did you bring up the fact David is a member of the LDS faith. It has ZERO to do with this business profile. God. This was a horrible pedantic video.

Since the mid 2000s they overtook both American and Delta in Boston to become the biggest carrier here and it has been amazing to be able to get random flights for less than 100 dollars one way, sometimes as low as 45 dollars to places like NC or FL! Besides having to pay for bags and the usual airport stuff that all carriers have, they have been a pretty easy experience! I have heard horror stories on United and American on the other hand!

Key factors you forgot to include was their expansion into the European market and introduction of a business cabin. As of 2023, JetBlue has flights to LHR (London) and AMS (Amsterdam). The Mint cabin gives American Airlines, Delta, and United Airlines a run for their money, in terms of business class cabins. It’s simply beautiful.

I was a fan of Jet Blue. Their partnership with AA has served me well with the extra considerations with their parner. That said, their systems are broken. I was coming home internationally for a family emergency at the last minute. I was stuck at JFK for two days. They could not tell me where my bags were, they could not accommodate me on another route home with any other carriers including their partners. I had to rent a car and drive 11 hours to my home airport. Thankfully, my bags were transferred and, I was able to retrieve them later. But i was unable to speak to my late grandmother one last time..

Before you even got to it, as a NYer I was like "one of the biggest things was that they flew out of JFK". Most of the other budget carriers you've covered in the past (like Southwest) only fly out of LGA or other NY-area airports that aren't JFK. From where I grew up it was infinitely easier to get to JFK, so it never made sense to try to get to LGA to fly the other carriers (that sound like they're way worse anyway), so I developed a positive association with them. I do still miss the Terra Blue chips though...

While i might have been a bit young when flying to remember everything, i have found memories of flying jet blue. It was always clean and cozy. They also were the first airline i was on that had the touch screens. We always had good experiences, only ever having one issue, and that was a symptom of circumstance more than just them messing up. I actually had to rewind the video to see what year that snowstorm you were talking about was. Our only bad experience was when flying to Hawaii in February 2014, we got to the Newark (spelling? But in New Jersey) airport, got on our plane, and then were stuck in it for 3 hours waiting for a chance to take off in a snow storm. We were one of a few planes to actually take off that day, and had another 12 hours of flying, in addition to the 3 hours of waiting. They were out of most meals by the time meal time came. But again, that was a storm that came in with little warning and much worse than expected. Not necessarily on them.

Those were always crappy movies or heavily edited films to meet a generic G rating. They changed the industry for the better.

A lot of history but not much on the current state of JetBlue. If the Spirit-JetBlue merger goes through (I hope it does), it is overall better for the US Airline industry. The US needs a mid-tier brand between the Legacy 3 (Delta, American, United) and the low-cost fliers (Southwest, Frontier, Allegiant, et al). That's JetBlue. The oddity which Company Man doesn't mention, JetBlue partnered with Hawaiian as a transfer partner (the reason Hawaiian got into the Logan to begin with; to make the longest non-stop US domestic route from Boston to Honolulu); but has since been bought out by Alaskan.

My first time flying as an adult, alone, was jetBlue in 2015. Even out on the west coast it was fantastic. As a tech savvy type, setting up a membership, booking, and checking in online is a breeze. The streamlined process with constant updates on my flight through text very much helped since I can't see well. Not to mention the instant vouchers available. A snowstorm delayed one flight i had become onw of their planes got dented from the wind. They made sure to get a whole new plane up from California and my next flight a year later was free. That commitment to safety over speed keeps me using them when available.

I grew up on on long island as a 90s kid and when JetBlue came on the scene, it was a huge deal. My friends and family all preferred to fly them over every other airline whenever possible. I remember the ice storm fiasco and thinking how far they have fallen...having become just another trash airline. I've since moved away from NY so it's good to see they rebounded.

Excellent video I learned some new things I was not aware of. I will share this video with my students. As shown in comment below co sider a part 2 that provides more details what Jet Blue did to survive after Neelman left. I also wonder why the board decided to let him go . The major incident did cost the company money but they didnt have faith that he could bring the company back ?

Once upon a time I interviewed to be a pilot at jetBlue. I was disappointed to not be hired. But not being hired there ended up being a blessing in disguise. My company is happy to have me serve as a Boeing 747 captain for them and the ACMI world tends to make money regardless of the economy. We made record profits during Covid!

You should do a video on Bose audio. I fly Jet Blue when I can for the bigger seats and the good customer service. Lately though flying Frontier which isn't out of huge JFK type airports but small really small airports so its not overwhelming parking or being dropped off or coming back and getting your car. Thank you for all your content!

JetBlue and Delta are my two favorite choices. I like JetBlue extensive network to the Caribbean which I fly to often from the NYC area. Their service out to the west coast is also pretty good. Lately however I’ve found that they’re no longer the most economical choice on some of these routes. They’re morphing into a legacy carrier.

JetBlue is affordable for domestic flights and their economy seats were comfortable. They also beat their imitators like Song which was a failed low cost airline concept by Delta Air Lines! I remember doing a case study in college about Song and JetBlue!

I can't wait for them to replace their Embraer 190s with Airbus A220s - much as I liked the 2x2 seating, especially when I would fly solo, they definitely are feeling worn (especially the IFE - last time I went on their A320s, OTOH, the refresh for their 320s was implemented in the aircraft I was on and it was really nice - and I assume their 220s are just as nice.) (That, and I really want to hear for myself - as opposed to through headphones watching a video - how quiet the A220 is compared to other aircraft during takeoff!)

My mom always loved JetBlue and was a frequent flyer commuting from her job downstate to our home in Rochester in the early 2000s. Now that I'm in the NYC area, I would love to try them, but there's always something stopping me from doing so. Every time I look, the schedules are either horribly inconvenient or I have to fly up to Boston and connect. Not to mention they still charge for checked bags unless you buy a premium fare, unlike Southwest. There's little to point to for calling them a LCC when they mostly operate like a legacy carrier with a terrible schedule. They're more like JetConfused.

We don’t fly very often, but in the last 20 years, 8 out of 10 flights have been on JetBlue, last being Sept 2023. My wife says she won’t fly another airline. My only complaints are their snack quality has gone down due to shrinkflation and every few flights the IFE at my seat didn’t work.

I generally love JetBlue. There have been issues with bookings when weather is a problem, but their customer support is definitely better than others. The team really wants to help. I remember one “short” flight we asked for a fork and were told they had none because the flight didn’t bring food, but the flight attendant gave us her personal fork from lunch (cleaned) to use. That’s the type of customer service they foster. I hope they get better and better….. Also, did you already do a video on Song airlines?

I like jetblue, for sure. There was a time where I was needing to fly twice a week and I always used jetblue for that. That said, I think they're better for a shorter flight, so my Sacramento to LA flights were perfect. But when I flew from Sac to new York I didn't find it super comfortable for long term flights All the same, I like that they don't nickel and dime you for every little thing like, say, United does. Even if United has more comfortable seating for long term

JetBlue’s automated system and excellent customer service led to a situation where my mother and I kept driving between Newark, LaGuardia, and JFK, constantly chasing a flight that was continually cancelled and rerouted just before we got to the airport. Finally we just parked ourselves at LaGuardia, and when the first customer service person just WALKED AWAY from us, it took a Port Authority policeman to find a supervisor and get them to get mom onto a plane. To Tampa. When her car was in Sarasota. And when she got to Tampa, she found that the guy in New York who promised to arrange ground transportation so she could get her car… hadn’t.

JetBlue is the only low cost US-based airline with European destinations like London, Paris, Amsterdam and I think Edinburgh is one too. That’s impressive in my book for them to do. And air travel has exploded (no pun intended) beyond belief since the pandemic.

You mean the first US airline to equiped all of the seats of their domestic fleet with PTVS. The major US carriers at the time only had their wide bodies or in some cases international configured narrow body planes equiped with PTVS which was primarily used for international flights. However, Jetblue certainly caused them to change that strategy.
