True, most all-in-on stuff nowadays end up spreading too thin, hopefully JetBrains took notice of that. I think this kind of apps that are "all-on-in" is not a future. My opinion is that it's better to be more flexible, and pick tools for your needs. First downside is vendor lock, you can't easily replace some part. Second is complexity, for small teams don't need all these features, the big teams have some specific requirements, and if they will not have something they will now be able to replace this Third, and important specially to me, I want to use editor that I like, it can be vscode and vim, etc. Where I get full control Where I write code I don't want to see any distraction like chats, or any other notifications, even icons, all I need is simple editor without extra stuff inside.

Even without the vendor locking in fact, the idea that a program will be half of your operating system gets annoying. Web browsers are one example, from the view of the elderly. For IDEs there's Emacs which is constantly debated. Overall, why do I need essentially a half bad virtual machine to run my programs on? I want one operating system. Where a text editing panel is, I should be able to take out the text and put a media player there. And where I chat I should be able to take out that chat and put Discord there. I do think we need more IDE like operating systems. In fact I haven't seen one yet.

Bro, you're complaining not having used Space. Plus, who the hell programs on Vim unironically? VSCode can be used along side Space and its an all-in-one program replacing Gitwhatever, Trello, Medium, Microsoft Teams, etc. I think it's a great program to delve into and try out. Complaining is never gonna get you anywhere. 1 - 3 years down the line, you might be even in a position to replace whatever your team is using with Space or propose it to your team leader. Never look down on new technologies before testing them and understanding their capabilities fully.
@Elodere
@Elodere 2 жыл бұрын
@@therussianemirati A lot of people code on Vim? If you want the most productivity, learning Vim makes it so easy? Also, you don´t need to test a software to spot flaws with the premise of the software. The problem is that to get the most of Space, your whole team should be using it, but not everyone will want to-and that’s OK. Personally, I’m currently enamored with the Helix editor, and I don’t want to be forced to switch. Let me code in whatever environment I’m most comfortable in. It’s better to decouple the collaboration tools from the coding environment to allow that freedom of choice. If you’d open access to these other tools from outside the Space IDE, I’d be on board.

I work for a game development studio and have recently been using Space in my personal time to judge the feasibility of trying to convince my company to adopt it. Overall its a fantastic package and I can see it being an incredible all-in-one replacement for things such as MS Teams, Slack, Confluence, Jira, etc. There's one gripe I have with it so far. Currently our SCM solution allows us to filter commits by file type, which proves very useful when you want to explicitly be code reviewing very specific things if your role is more suited to review that particular change. If filtering could be added to Changes, then honestly, convincing won't be at all difficult, because it's near exact what we already have, just not spread over five or six different services. Amazing work, keep up all you're doing

Performance is indeed a major factor. I almost never have only a single instance of an IDE open. I wonder how responsive my machine will be with 3 Spaces open simultaneously. Integrating the chat client, issue boards, container management, and well basically everything, implies either high local resource usage or a lot of cross-instance interdependence. Given the performance impact of the excellent-but-undeniably-heavy ReSharper, I'm guessing it will be the former. But regardless, it looks like a good product and I hope it does well. I am not sure my organization would be willing to switch to a subscription-based development environment though.

Looks to be a great product, and JetBrains has already proven their dev tools are great, so personally I don't have a concern about this all-in-one architecture. Regarding "difficult to convince your team" part from other comments, I believe this type of matter should be decided by higher managers and as a team, rather than individuals. If a company picks this, it'll be fine and productive. My personal concerns are: price & learning curve. While the collaboration tools are not big deals, but you need to switch to JetBrains IDEs, which is a very steep migration, also expensive!

Very true. I wonder though when the open source community will reach this level of integration on vscode. Seems everything can be made into a plugin. (famous last words)

at least one feature is missing, managers like Gantt charts, is there any plan this feature will be incorporated in space like in YouTrack ?

Yes you missed the part where programmers want to focus and not get disturbed all the time. And use vim. And not being boxed into a padded room which restricts what is possible.

Right now, what I need, as an independent developer, is a tool that let's me auto deploy after a git commit & push. I had to create my own script + cronjob that would stop my app, perform a git hard reset, and then start the app again. The cronjob is on a 1min timer so I'm wondering if there is any other way?
