Saw this tour I think before the album came out in the states, had no clue what was going on with the white suit. I was 19 so this brings back great and somewhat bittersweet memories. Taking the train into Madison Square Garden (Penn station in NYC is under the Garden), seeing Ian run out onto the stage, the effects of the various imbibements! Glad to see it got the Steven Wilson treatment, the original sounds at best OK, and his work on the other stuff has been stellar. Thanks as always Barry, it remains a privilege to support this channel.

I was there too, and also took the train to the MSG at 20, also didn't know what to expect. I'd seen them there in 79, and it was a very different Tull! I was thrilled at the show, although the A pieces didn't do much for me. Will need to listen to this new treatment- Wilson is a wizard, as well as being a helluva musician in his own right!

I remember walking into the record store and seeing "A" (I think I also bought Gary Numan's "Telekon" the same day.) Jaw on floor, plus sadness with the band gone. Saw the concert with Eddie Jobson which was astoundingly excellent. The "A" songs were much better live.

I loved the A album and appreciated it even more after hearing them play those songs live. The sound in concert was mind blowing. I was so excited when Slipstream came out as I was at that very concert. One of the biggest disappointments in my life is in Slipstream the added weird videos and not enough film of the concert. I have always loved the live version of Sweet Dreams and did not mind that being thrown in. I agree…where is the rest of the live footage? I would love to see it. They filmed the whole concert as far as I remember. The concert and show was so freaking good. That big pink A was so cool. Heartbreaking. I do love the surround live disks in this set. Brings back memories. Thanks for reviewing this as I might not have ever known about this set.

@@fourpoint64 I also didn't realise that 'Crossfire' was a true story. Very often 'A' isn't given it's proper credit but I have a lot of affection for it. In fact perhaps my favourite span of Tull albums is from 'Songs From the Wood' , 'Heavy Horses', 'Stormwatch', 'A', and the brilliant ' The Broadsword and the Beast'. Those are 5 great albums IMO.

I love this album, it was never a great sounding record even back then for whatever reason but hoping it's slightly improved now. First then-new Tull release I ever bought so it's special for various reasons. They heavily promoted it on German TV, where I heard the singles first and went straight out and bought the LP. It's strangely underrated, not sure why exactly as it mostly sounds like classic Tull music to me with a few new 'modern' tricks.
@TheHumbuckerboy3 жыл бұрын
@@LarryFleetwood8675 I own 'A' on both vinyl and also CD and I would say that the sound quality is pretty good on both that I own. Funnily enough, I had bought 'The Broadsword and the Beast' as a single CD and the sound quality was very low and unclear . Then I got 'Broadsword' again as part of a Jethro Tull 5 CD set and the sound quality is actually fine !

I really enjoyed the Trio Instrumental track. That is one that you could only listen to once or twice in concert. that is why I used to love to see Tull in-concert because they would come up with these incredible improvised instrumentals that always blew me away.

It was never an album that really sat with me upon its release and an album that perhaps got the least attention in JT's discography. Though I will be looking forward to receiving my copy on Friday if all goes well with my preorder and it will give me a chance to revisit it in a fresh light knowing how remarkable Steve Wilson work in this field is. These packages are by far the best and are bang on for the buck or even "Book". I hope it's not too long before the repackaged 1970 album Benefit hits the shelves so to speak as well. Another GRAND! job done here Barry and thanks for giving us a detailed look at what to expect and roll on Friday for me...

Seriously? Benefit never got this treatment? Does anyone know why it was skipped? My plan has been to get all of these eventually, won't feel right w/o Benefit in the bunch 😕
@LeeLucas3 жыл бұрын
@@kayleenilsson3825 The reason really goes back to how these Book Editions started and they were not released in chronological order. Thick As A Brick Was the first of the albums to get the treatment and around that time they had already released 5.1 Surround Mixes of Stand Up. Aqualung and Benefit in Digipaks. I can only think that Ian liked how Thick As A Brick had been newly packaged in a book that he decided to do his entire catalogue with the same idea and started to put more out. They were not in chronological order until Songs From The Wood came out and the rest started to be released in chronological order. Because of the work being done on each of the packages, it's taken some time to get around to repackage and write about Benefit. But I do know that it is in the process of being done and I dare say that will also get released this year at some point. By the way, if you are intending to get them all it's going to cost you an arm and a leg most of them are out of print and you will end up paying silly money for them. When they first came out they were retailed around £17.99 and I picked up the first 3 brand new from Amazon for £14 each. They then went up to around £27.99 and now over the last few years around £35. The new one is the only one of them all I have saved the least money on and I pre-ordered every one of them on Amazon well in advance. I only saved 14p on 'A' (a la mode). Even Songs From The Wood cost me less than £20 when it was retailed around £34 on Amazon. Best of luck getting hold of them and it's a shame they are not re-issuing them.
@kayleenilsson38253 жыл бұрын
@@LeeLucas Oh okay, did not know they weren't released in chronological order, that explains it, thanks for the information, man 🙂 I feel slightly more at ease now about Benefit, guess I'll take your word for it 👍 (someone else mentioned it as well so...) Yes I know they are extremely expensive now unfortunately. Even though I've been a casual fan since about 8 years back I only just became a hardcore fan in the last couple of years and recently found out about these glorious must-have editions, so bad timing there sadly... However I live on the hope of one day being able to afford at least some of them. High priority goes to APP/Chateau, War Child, Minstrel, Stand Up, TAAB.... Oh screw it, I gotta get 'em all! 😫😤 Yeah I guess I been living in denial here... Think I'll just keep doing that actually, the truth is too painful 😭😛

I once had the nice experience of meeting and getting to know a bit Chris Amson, a lovely guy who was Tull's chief live sound engineer on a number of their tours, including "A". He once remarked that recordings taken right off the main mixing board, with no special effects ("dry", as they say) in JT concerts were notable in being consistently note-perfect performances. From a fellow who had done sound for many bands from Zappa to King Crimson, this was high praise indeed.
