My downfall is not seeing them more in concert. How I wish that time could be turned back to see them in their prime and younger years because I was just a little runt back then. Thank God for video and other recording devices so that the music can live on forever.

Jethro Tull continues to astonish me. A Passion Play is my favorite album by that incarnation of the band, composed BY the most talented and gifted players in Tull's career. Ian Anderson will concur.
@jawoody9745

They were a brilliant band, every incarnation. This happens to be my favorite one, with Barrie Barlow, Jeffery H.H. and John Evan. And of course, Mr. Barre and Mr. Anderson.
@blackinblue11
@blackinblue11 4 жыл бұрын
Can't get over it. Barlow was a madman. Hammond was a madman. John Evan, what the hell is that sound 7:33? We heard wild hammond sounds in the old days, but that sounds like a organ dismantled from the church, transported to that chateau to be assembled and connected to leslie amps. What a massive dirty warm wicked sound of a madman. Barre is a madman, unheard sound from the era, so fluid and sensitive but aggressive playing. Ofc that Anderson is a madman. Full on hard rock progressive, with a FLUTE! What a piece of music, musicianship and what a SOUND! As good as the music gets..

When I was 12 years old I heard Dream Theater for the fist time and taught it was revolutionary peace of music way ahead of its time.. now i am 25 and know that Jethro Tull are the fathers of the modern progressive rock- way before and way ahead of everybody else... this tune proves it!

I was introduced and inundated with great progressive music from a very young age. I was 8 when my sister's boyfriend bought me "In the Wake of Poseidon" by King Crimson. He had already turned me on to their first album. So this kind of stuff was played in my room all the time. I remember getting "Tommy" for my 9th birthday along with "Abbey Road" for Christmas. I was also playing Jethro Tull's "Stand Up" a lot during those years, as well as Emerson, Lake & Palmer's first album. My neighbors hated me!!!

This is bloddy wonderful!!! i love it, I truly do. It makes me long all the more to have seen the "Passion Play" tour live & in-person -- it's one of my great regrets that I missed out on witnessing that show. You know what? I did a wicked thing. I took the Chateau d'Isaster tracks and edited them into the "Passion Play" CD, as sort of bonus tracks wherever I thought they fit best. Personally, I think it's great. However, I doubt that Ian would appove. Thanks so much for sharing, Aqua.

This is basically a rather crude working version of the second half of side 1 of APP. What appears on the album is about 50 times better in terms of sound quality. This is an interesting curiosity but little more.
@bandfromtheband9445
@bandfromtheband9445 6 жыл бұрын
I think that it is more than an "interesting curiosity!" It's a better version of "Oblique Critique" than what ended up on "A Passion Play." It has a lot more energy and Ian's flute is twice as menacing than what ended up on that album.The only thing I miss HERE, from the APP album, are the flatted 16th notes John Evan played on piano when the whole thing kicks in at 15:40 on APP side one .

I agree Arjun. Ian Anderson is the musical genius of our time. I listen to a lot of classical music. Anderson's music is more creative then most of the great classical music. A lot of classical music is formulaic. Anderson's music is always new and fresh, highly innovative. I listen to Tull more than everything else combined.

I saw consecutive tours -- probably 10 or so -- beginning in 1974 in Hersheypark Arena, PA, then Philly at the Spectrum. I, too, regret not seeing this tour, though a good friend, a tidy bit older than I, saw it. She said it was incredible, the first musical "play" she ever imagined seeing. Incredible genius. Martin Barre is so incredible. Now I'm in TX and Tull skips the hick state, for some reason.

There are some of their songs that I like, and I don't like most of them. Is that fu-ing OK with you? Who do you think you are? Of course I've listened to them and owned them. I started with "Court Of The Crimson King" which was very progressive and literate, then they moves into some kind of modern classical jazzy stuff which some of it is OK, but it's not the kind of stuff you listen to often and some of it - TO ME - is unlistenable.
