pretty standard for the time, and copied/greatly influenced by ginger baker's cream "toad" solo
@mrgrey3613 жыл бұрын
@@RocknJazzer I've heard Toad a million times, this is not copied from Toad.
@RocknJazzer3 жыл бұрын
@@mrgrey361 he is playing nearly the same stuff as ginger in the toad solo, it influenced so many in 66, really the first real long form proper drum solo in rock period (outside of simple wipeout style surf drumming tom patterns of the earlier 60s). Of course barlow was influenced by it as a young english lad, ginger was one of the first and top players then to influence younger english drum blokes then, gingers 10 years older than barlow.
@mrgrey3613 жыл бұрын
@@RocknJazzer I am not really hearing the Toad solo here. Some similarities in the tom pattern but not exact, and Barrie's playing a bit faster. Of course, most rock drummers at that time were influenced by Baker, especially those in the "progressive" rock sphere. Another big influence on Barrie's playing was Michael Giles.
@RocknJazzer3 жыл бұрын
@@mrgrey361 I like Giles in the early Fripp stuff and solo, more jazzy tho than Barrie. Barrie is good and I dig his playing later on robert plants 80s albums, but for Tull I prefer Clive Bunker. This solo is more Toad based than most any other drum solo I have ever heard, tribal tom patterns, triplets, etc Im not saying anything is bad about that I love it all

It seemed like an eternity after discovering certain bands like Tull until I was actually old enough to see them perform live. I got into Jethro Tull around 1974 and saw them live in 1978. I saw so many great bands back then and I felt I needed to go to all the gigs on every night. Damn I am glad I saw all those great bands back then because unfortunately modern music has not progressed through the years it has regressed into basic nonsense or music for people that do not understand anything about what is creative or innovative or progressive or just plain awesome about real good music like this.

They were only a "blues band" on the first album. Stand Up, Benefit, and Aqualung are kind of like a hard rock/folk/jazz mixture. And then Thick As A Brick is when they went full-blown prog. I suppose Benefit and Aqualung could be called prog, although they weren't doing much odd rhythms yet until Barrie joined in mid-1971.

@RichieEastside Actually I take back that black sabbath statement. If you really want to "ahead of their time" in terms of guitar, look up High Tide - Sea Shanties if you have never heard of them before. They are probably a little bit more acknowledged in england, since it was one of the most important underground prog rock bands in England 69. It's not very well known at all in America though, one of the most underrated bands of all time IMO.

Sabbath's first album & Paranoid both came out in 1970. Led Zep started in 1968. Both were much harder than Tull guitarwise. Mahavishnu Orchestra came out a year later in 1972 which was louder than all of them but more of a mixture of Jazz-Rock Fusion and Prog-Rock since hardly any fusion bands before Mahavishnu used odd meters in every song.
