"Is he gonna play that flute or is it just a prop"? Um, he's gonna play the hell out of that flute!

Jethro Tull were a Phenomenal Band Back in Day, they released something like 20 Albums, and Ian Anderson the Flute Player, was world renowned for his Talent, and The Band came from the Seaside Town Of Blackpool, But they never in my opinion got the public credit, that they so Deserved. Cheers Lee, Thank You. A trip down Memory Lane

Yes, it's a flute Ian Anderson was jumping about the stage with. Bungle in the Jungle, Cross-eyed Mary, Aqualung, Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day are some other tunes of theirs.

Actually my comment, "the flute is a heavy metal instrument" quotes the media thank you campaign to the grammy folks, when Tull won their first and only grammy in the first "Hard Rock, Heavy Metal" category. In true Tull style they used their own brand of humor to calm the crybabies, not the least of whom was Metallica, that they didn't deserve the award.

Ian Anderson's the best! He's a flute maniac! Been a Jethro Tull fan since 1972. Was supposed to go to their concert in Houston in 1974, but the stars didn't align.

It's a song about breaking away from an addiction. The runaway train is his addiction to Old Charlie (Cocaine?)... "old Charlie stole the handle. and the train it won't stop going, no way to slow down". The person in the song loses everything... "he sees his children jumping off, at stations one by one. His woman and his best friend in bed and having fun..." He hits rock bottom ( crawling down the corridor, on his hands and knees". He chances upon a bible in his hotel room "Gideon's Bible, open at page one..." and uses it to beat his addiction.

No drugs involved! Rather a metaphore for world population increase. We were more concerned in the 70s when we only were 3 billion. (Well I an still worried).

I'd like to hear your reaction to a neglected sleeper from the era: “Farewell Song” on the album “Live at Winterland ‘68” by Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin.

When he wrote this, it evolved in to a song about world problems like overcrowding. He is Scottish, that's probably why you don't understand him 😂😂😂

I have my own exprience of Scottish acent as I fell for Scottish exchange student( a girl back in the days )and first I thought I hadn't learned English at all as I only could understand some words but not what she was telling... so finally I asked, could sehe try to pronaunce more like in England and that helped me alot... Rock flute sounds Asian?! It's basically a lead guitar riff -- but with a flute.
