Might be kind of a neat feature if that thing had the option of powering itself over POE.
@grumpus811
@grumpus811 Ай бұрын
PiKVM setup can do that since you can power a Raspberry Pi with PoE. That's how I power mine. It's attached to the back of a server and I use it once in a blue moon. It would be a waste to keep it powered 24/7. Now I can remotely enable PoE on the switch, PiKVM turns on and I can do my thing.
@Nevexo287
@Nevexo287 Ай бұрын
There's an open feature request for this, it might be in a future version; you can power it with a USB-C splitter cable or wisdPi is making a board that powers JetKVM over the expansion port.

WisdPi is working on a PoE adapter for it, looks pretty slick! I would like it integrated into a "pro" version though.

The lack of PoE makes it a non-starter for me. Totally surprising that this type of device didn't have it included in the design from the beginning.

Awesome video Cameron! - Just so you know, your unit does have the 16GB eMMC chip, just the image it was flashed with at the factory has the userdata partition formatted to the 6gb-ish size as the previous models have the 8GB chip, and it was upgraded in October. If you reflash your device using the "Factory Reset" guide on the website you'll get the larger partition, and be given more space for images :) The KS pledge & retail units will, of course, be flashed with the newer image before being shipped.

I got this a couple months ago and I just can’t wait to get it. I know there should be shipping soon. I was really hoping to receive it on Christmas break so I had of time to play with it but either way i’m excited to get it whenever it arrives. I’ve been holding off on a couple of projects where it would’ve required me to take my monitor, keyboard, and mouse into my utility closet to do some upgrades so I’ve just been putting them off waiting until this device comes in. Nice demo also this has been the most comprehensive one that I’ve seen. Thanks.

Superb video, Thanks. I have 3 of these on order from the kickstarter. Looking promising, currently using PiKVM with a 4 port KVM switch so needed a few more for other projects so thought I would try the JetKVM out. This device looks way simpler and your video was an excellent overview of the state of play today. Appreciated.

Such a neat little device can't wait until my unit arrives. Going to use it on my 2019 Mac Pro that I use as a server without IPMI. Wish it had alt-mode USBC Display port input and a internal ATX power supply cable with a expansion cable passthrough PCI bracket so you don't have wires just hanging outside the PC for power and reset. I wonder is audio over HDMI will be added in the future.

I would have bought one of these if I hadn't recently purchased a NanoKVM off the back of an LTT video a few months ago. I've had that for a while now and it's working flawlessly. It has a full HDMI port and can connect easily to motherboard ATX control pins. I paid less than $69 landed in the UK for it too from Aliexpress. Admittedly the case doesn't seem as nice as this, and I don't fully trust the software on it, but it's fine for me being on a locked down VLAN.

I assume in the future someone will make a switcher adapter which will just allow you to use a KVM switcher and an addon will send IR commands to swap the ports so you can get multiple computers out of one kvm switch

The current problem with KVM switches and this type of KVM switch are the fact is emulates the KB/Mouse on the same USB port, that confuses things, this is currently a problem with the JetKVM and L1Techs KVM switch, but it should be fixable in a software update. As for other styles of KVM Switch, it'd be fairly easy to make an extension board that can be signalled over the UART extension port to control the switch, just needs more testing with various models of switch.

This would also be really great for provisioning PCs/laptops as well. Someone brings in a system that needs to be imaged, no need to set up a separate station as you could have a script that takes care of restoring the image.

What's the benefit over remoting in (apart from being able to access the BIOS), how many times are you going to remotely install an OS? I'll probably get one because it will look cool on my rack, but I don't see a huge amount of practical usage.

I've kinda half thought same thing. Anyone considering a homelab can get 'good' second hand servers will full RMMs already (you still have to be careful Dell IDrac enterprise is usually 'part' of the package and the perpetual nature allows you to 'make use of it' compared to others like HP iLo that is a bit more fickle). This said, I have experience of enterprise machines with limited RMMs. Also a lot of machines have RMMs that are woefully insecure with no update opportunity, so this is more useful if you are security conscious, let alone for things with no RMM (again I have experience of even fairly 'modern' enterprise equipment - 2019 vintage ' with Java based iKVM consoles which makes me cringe - although critically needed). So I do think it's a niche product for sure, but even in enterprise it has use (although it really does need to follow through with opensource, and even audit of the hardware before I would consider it in such environments). People using commodity hardware for a server would definitely benefit, but given costs between that and a 2nd hand dell are marginal

I have a workstation I use both in person and remotely, and issues can arise when it becomes unreachable remotely. I may want to see what it's doing and diagnose any issues I find if I can't connect to it, I may want to change the order in a dual-boot setup (e.g. load GRUB (for Debian) instead of Windows Boot Manager), or I may want to turn the PC on remotely if it doesn't respond to a Wake-on-LAN command.

Plenty of people want the ability to manage a remote machine at the BIOS level and don't have IPMI. There are also instances where a computer simply doesn't have the option to use something like RDP or it's a hassle to get it set up. Things like this or the PiKVM may have no purpose for you but there is a market for them.
@jonjohnson2844
@jonjohnson2844 Ай бұрын
@@playingwithdata Yeah I'm not denying there aren't any use cases, I just don't think it's necessary for the vast majority of homelabbers...outside of that you have enterprise with IPMI, so where is the market for this product? I hope it succeeds, and I will probably buy one, but the geek market like us won't sustain it.

They might have updated the bios but it is currently packed away for my move. I bought it thinking it could be a nice little pc to run opnsense but nope, when I lost power the internet went out and would not turn on till I turn the pc back on, it was a sad day when I found that out.

whilst it looks like a good product, i wonder what the point of the screen is other than to give it a USP. most people will have these stuck in a rack somewhere so will be unlikely to ever see the screen let alone need to control it via the touch screen. I'd image most of the cost of the product is the screen. remove the screen and make it cheaper and it would probably sell more, but without the screen it's just another IP KVM in the market.
@camerongray1515
@camerongray1515 Ай бұрын
For a situation where you're setting it up and never touching it again, I agree the screen isn't hugely necessary. But for me, I can see myself using this on more of an ad-hoc basis where I'd be moving it around to differnet machines/networks where I need temporary remote KVM access. In that situation, a screen to display the IP address will be useful, and even moreso when it'll let me configure static IP address settings from the screen itself. Especially for environments without DHCP, it'll be a massive timesaver over needing to change my laptop to the same subnet as the KVM console, log in to the console, change the IP address settings and then log back out again and switch my laptop back to the correct IP address settings.
@chenks76
@chenks76 Ай бұрын
@@camerongray1515 yes as a mobile device it makes sense, but i wonder who the target market is and i wonder if mobile users are that marker, that makes me wonder if the screen is just there for the USP. there's cretainly a lot of youtubers doing their own review of this product. i think you've been the only one to mention the benefit of using it as a mobile device - but that might be more to do with those youtubers not actually being in the tech industry.
