Trying Albanian specialty dish from Lake Shkodra!
On this vlog, we continued our roadtrip from Vermosh, stopping at Tamare and a viewpoint called Leqet e Hotit on the way back to Shkoder.
This time we wanted to check out Lake Shkodra and try the local fish cooked on a rooftile as recommended by one of our subscriber.
We also went to Rozafa Castle after our meal.

Okay for those of you who want to know the story of the Rozafa Castle goes like this The story tells about the initiative of three brothers who set down to build a castle. They worked all day, but the foundation walls fell down at night. They met a wise old man who seems to know the solution of the problem asking them if they were married. When the three brothers responded positively, the old man said "If you really want to finish the castle, you must swear never to tell your wives what I am going to tell you now. The wife who brings you your food tomorrow you must bury alive in the wall of the castle. Only then will the foundations stay put and last forever". The three brothers swore on besa(word of honor) to not speak with their wives of that happened. However the two eldest brothers broke their promise and quietly told their wives everything, while the honest youngest brother kept his besa and said nothing. The mother of the three brothers knew nothing of their agreement, and while the next afternoon at lunch time, she asked her daughters-in-law to bring lunch to the workers, two of them refused with an excuse. The brothers waited anxiously to see which wife was carrying the basket of food. It was Rozafa, the wife of the youngest brother, who left her younger son at home. Embittered, the youngest brother explained to her what the deal was, that she was to be sacrificed and buried in the wall of the castle so that they could finish building it, and she didn't protest but, worried about her infant son, she accepted being immured and made a request: "I have but one request to make. When you wall me in, leave a hole for my right eye, for my right hand, for my right foot and for my right breast. I have a small son. When he starts to cry, I will cheer him up with my right eye, I will comfort him with my right hand, I will put him to sleep with my right foot and wean him with my right breast. Let my breast turn to stone and the castle flourish. May my son become a great hero, ruler of the world." And that is why you might hear in a lot of cultures that the woman is the foundation of a house. That a house without a woman would literally fall apart because woman are what keeps a family together. (Idk if they are implying that most men can't take care of a house as good as a woman but anyways) in Albanian culture women were always seen as something sacred i think.

Love this road trip.It’s wonderful how you can just stop and have a swim whenever there is water. That trout dish is a lot like our roasted fish stuffed with chilies,ground onions,turmeric and tamarind paste but ofc it’s roasted over open fire.Nothing fancy like roof tile roasting. Glad you remember our Asam Pedas.It’s my all time favorite fish dish. Steve’s voice scares that poor turtle into a sprint lol

Looks like you got another drone already.. 😁 The term you're looking for to describe the cut of carp is "steak". It's a slice of the fish. In the US the carp is an invasive species and have been taking over rivers in the South. When a speedboat approaches they leap up into the air and hit people. Americans don't like to eat carp because it has a lot of bones, but it's a Chinese delicacy. Most trout are river fish, but what they farm and sell as "salmon" in Norway is actually some sort of trout, which lives like a salmon (they migrate up rivers to spawn). All the Norwegian "salmon" they've been selling here these days has been relabeled "fjord trout" at the supermarket. That roof tile looks like the ones they put on the ridge of a roof.

Glad you enjoyed it. I don't know if you dipped the bread into the fish sauce. That's the best way to eat it and the bread is straight from the oven too. I was there in May and the friends I brought along kept ordering the corn bread. Also they have the molten cheese in a clay pot and many other things but there is so much you can eat 🙂

the kitchen to the roof?. Arh....u r referring to cooking using the roofing tiles. Clay is porous and allow the heat & the moisture to circulate evenly during the cooking process, retaining all the nutrients of the food cooked and hence the food is tastier. Wow!....the stream u took a dip was so crystal clear and clean. Really invigorating. Can imagine the air is so fresh, no pollution and salubrious, I can live to a💯.
