@shamsiahmohdzain856 Жыл бұрын
As a kelantanese, here is my tips on eating sour mango. - Put soy sauce in a small dipping plate + a teaspoon of sugar + some belacan + one tiny cili padi or normal small red chilli. You can add a tiny pinch of coarse salt if you like more salty. Normally belacan, soy sauce and sugar already enough for me. That's how my late father taught me how to eat it😊 For Akok, I normally eat it as dessert after a meal or just as tea time. Coconut grater: you sit on it and cut the old brownish coconut open into half and grate the half coconut on the graters. Be careful it require a lot of force to grate with the grater before the machine was invented. The coconut grater is used to grate coconut then we pressed the coconut and make it into coconut milk (santan).

The hard seed like bean must be jering. Jering is like the father to the petai (stinky bean). The grandfather to the petai is the kerdas. If petai is on the scale of 5 in making your urine smelly, the jaring is a 9 and the kerdas past 10. Like petai, the jering and kerdas are consume so as to make your rice more appetising.

Finally trying Akok! Good job guys! You guys should try to find the one at a kampung stall where they cook the Akok live using coconut shell and husk. It taste better right after cook. The ulam you try to bite is called Jering (a type of stinky bean). It’s kinda tough to eat especially the ripe one as it gets harder as it get more ripe. To be able to bite into one of this, you should try the one which is not that ripe. It will be easier to bite and crunchy. The taste is somewhat bitter and the best way to eat it is with budu + tempoyak. The coconut shredder you saw in the museum is the traditional one where you sit on it and grind the coconut flesh onto the metal tip. Kelantan is also famous for its Wau Bulan (large kite) which is played after harvesting season and during windy time. During a hot day, try your self some Rantau Panjang style ice cream with lots of topping to go with it. It is easy to find along the roadside where the sellers sold the ice cream on bike. The ice cream usually comes with bread crumbs, peanut, and jelly. Percik is the cooking style where you grill the meat (chicken or fish or beef) and then cover with the sauce. Kelantan style percik uses coconut milk as the base of the gravy and poured onto the grilled meat. Yati Ayam Percik restaurant’s has the best Ayam Percik for you to try with Nasi Kerabu or just plain white rice. Before the occupation of westerners, locals use Jawi as a style of writing in Bahasa Melayu using Arabic alphabet. Jawi is still taught in national and islamic religious school and it differs fro Arabic in sense of how you write and the meaning of the words.

I'm a Kelantanese living in Kuala Lumpur for over 30 years, my wife is Filipino, once a while when we back to Kota Bharu and went to Siti Khatijah market, she spends a few hundred ringgit buying all the items, this place makes you ( rabun mata)

u actually can eat the green mangoes with white sugar or kicap pekat tambah gula and chilis padi. the sugar can reduce the sourness n enhance the taste

Steve, when you bought the small green mango...I was like, O....no.....!! It's terribly sour! We use that for sambal pound with chilli, etc... as a dipping sauce. And you are thinking it's like granny smith little green apple, lol. The sour mango is usually eaten with sweet spicy sauce dipping. And my kampong market actually sells good Akok .

The Asam Boi powder (ground dried plum) goes well with crunchy fruits like guava, even apples. Just sprinkle on top of your sliced fruits. Fruit sellers or grocery stores sell it.

Wow.. another beautiful video. So here comments. It was not chicken liver, it was the chicken gizzard. For the coconut, you sit on the grater wooden bench and use the "iron spur" in front to grate the half cut coconut. Wow, those are the most beautiful coconut I ever seen, the wood and the cravings are really incredible rare and beautiful...As for the crunching small mango, only the diehards eat them, with a small pinch of salt..Love them...My mouth already salivating as I type these comments...Hahaha

Chicken gizzard! Good to know. The coconut grater was really intricate and now that you mention it, it does look like a seat/saddle. The sour mango??? OK, we are going to try to eat it. It's been sitting on a shelf since we got it lol

For the jering, you should try “jering rebus” or boiled jering. It is softer and taste so good with grated coconut. Normally there are some makciks selling them at Pasar Siti Khadijah.

For that coconut grater, you sit at the seat and grate the coconut. It's hard to explain. You can find the video to watch how to use it. Just type 'kukur kelapa traditional'. As for that sour mango, the easiest way is to find a ready made sauce. Kuah rojak mak bee. There's another brand of sauce too. Usually written as 'rojak'. You can find pretty easily in big supermarket.
