Handwriting is better. I just feel like you can truly express yourself with your handwriting. I mean, you could express your personality though typing, but it is not as expressive as something handwritten. :D

Do that too! I wrote my Master's thesis that way. Writing long hand can help you edit when you have to type. I still have notebooks loaded with paper and paragraph starters. I throw grammar, spelling , and neatness out the window. As long as I can get my ideas down with my favorite pen and notebook. I even rewrote my class notes so I didn't have to study much.

Most ideal situation is having the professor upload the PowerPoints and to just annotate it in your own handwriting. That way, anything that the teacher feels is necessary is already written out for you, you can mostly just sit back and listen during lecture, and occasionally make notes that are relevant. Rather than scrambling to write during class.

Writing out notes is definitely a sure way to remember things . I write note all the time lol because I am forgetful. I am practicing my cursive writing because I don’t want to lose that skill, since it was how I was taught in school back home in Ecuador. I was forced to print when I came to Canada in 1991. I'm writing a novel by hand. Have started many novels on my laptop - but never got as far as I've done with my current novel. Much easier to carry a cheap ring bound A4 book along than a laptop. When I have 10min to write I just open the book and start - not waste the same amount of time for my laptop to power up and load up the manuscript. The process also feels more natural and organic - and I have a great excuse for buying new pens ☺️

For anyone who ever has to sit through a staff meeting (in-person, not online), taking notes by hand is the only way to go! I've been looking through years and years of notes that I've taken at committee, faculty, and staff meetings, and have found very little of consequence, but lots of good commentary - everything from asides I wrote about the body language of the other people there ("___ looks like she's on the verge of sleep, guess she's past caring anymore..."), to a doodle I did after we adopted our first cat, to some really good expletives expressing my disdain for the subject of conversation, and so on. I've even found 2 nonsensical, very funny stories that some co-workers and I wrote, each writing a few sentences then passing the paper to another, during a long and boring meeting. I've even inked up pens just for the purpose of trying the new colors out at what was expected to be a long meeting! And you really can't do any of that with a computer, esp. at the same time that you're looking up, nodding, and appearing to pay complete attention!

I always prefer writing by hand. Even in school, my notes and rough drafts would be by hand and my good copies would be typed up. I just have an easier time putting stuff down by hand. I'm a very tactile person, so I like feeling the paper and the solidity of the pen. Even now, I have a health ledger for any health issues I have (chronic pain, weak immune system and several physical issues due to bad genes), and I far prefer writing it. I also sometimes like practicing calligraphy because it can be very meditative. It's basically the same as why I prefer physical art to digital art, though I kind of want to learn to do digital art.

As I was in school well before the laptop, I took all my notes by hand. Ballpoint, as I had trouble finding ink for my fountain pen back then. And the combination of a ballpoint and hurried note taking destroyed my handwriting for the next few decades... Took a stroke and getting back to a fountain pen (everything else hurts to write with, now), and practice, and I have decent handwriting again. 😁 Even the letters I send out I feel help. Not only my handwriting, but retention of things in general.

even tho I’m still young I grew up with handwriting only. this helped to prevent copying from the net so teachers never let us give in typed papers until college. but now even the school rules are changing & teachers prefer typed essays bc it’s easier for them to read & students can’t cheat with given page numbers. I think both should be used bc there are occasions when one is more appropriate & pragmatic then the other I also believe that handwriting should be a part of everyone’s life. it’s good for the brain & for creativity

I definitely agree! I find writing so much better than typing. For example, I had a math test coming up and decided to take down notes during a lesson in my notebook. I was able to write down all the key terms and definitions, make little drawings, and organize my thoughts clearly. I remembered all of the info and I got a very good grade on that test. On the other hand, I had a science test one week and I was kind of lazy and typed all my notes on a google document. I got a B+ on that test since I couldn't remember my notes all that well. I also agree that writing is more personal and therapeutic. I rarely type things unless its absolutely needed. :)

I'm a mathematician, and I just can't understand what people could be wiriting on their computers during class. Not only is it extremely time-cpnsuming to pick the right symbol, but it also minimising doodling - I wouldn't be able to pass a single class without arrows, asteriscs and all that jazz. I teach a remedial undergrad class of basic engineering for my doctorate's supervisor, and I just don't know what the kids with the computers are doing. How are you going to make a complicated structure image on screen? And they're not using tablets with styluses, they're actually typing. I genuinely want to see those notes and ask them how it works, because it's beyond my understanding.

For someone who frequently switches between languages, getting the keyboard to give me the right diacritical marks can be very distracting and frustrating. Writing by hand is much more stress free in this aspect, plus it's easier to have all of one language in one ink colour when all I have to do is grab another pen. I also find that doodling helps me focus, so when I'm tying things out I always have to type very quickly or my mind will wander.

I think the issue with typing is because the keys (unless you get custom keypads of course) feel the same and the part of your brain that learns from the sense of touch and feeling texture can't tell from touch alone that the buttons being pushed are different despite feeling mostly the same. With writing, there's the sense of touch and muscle memory of flexing muscles and moving joints with a tool in-hand to create words on a page. It's more of a difference in tactile surfaces and how we interact with them. That's just my guess, I am not an expert in this stuff so I could be wrong.

I love fountain pens, but I gotta admit, Ipads are incredible for note taking. you can easily share/erase/edit the notes and, and they usually don't easily get damaged with water, the ipads aren't waterproof but I somehow always keep that in mind unlike notebooks lol. you can backup your notes automatically too. they're more environmentally friendly too. but ipads start at 400$ for a meh one and 800-1000$ for a good one, and they also have batteries "tho tbh pretty big ones" and they don't have the same awesome feel of ink flowing under your hands, and Atlhough I heard apple is way better at this, the samsung ones suck at palm rejection. i think i'm gonna use a nice paper/ink for my college when i get there, it feels nice to feel ink under your hands :3

Yes to all of these, my students who handwrite their notes have much better retention and will get to the higher level thought processes faster. It also helps with focus for students (and myself) with ADHD and dyslexia they have less distractions at their fingertips, they can draw and arrange the notes to help them focus. The red and blue spelling and grammar checks are nice but they can stop thought flow in its tracks.

writing on paper makes writing in other writing systems so much easier, especially if you have to write the text in RTL language

Agree with all of your thoughts. I have found...as I am sure many others also have, that doing almost all my text on a keyboard has left my hand and finger muscles needing to be retrained. ....Your video would be more enjoyable Without that background sound track.

1. Write notes by hand 2. Read and type the notes 3 read the notes in a voice recorder. 4. Listen to the notes 5. Explain the process in your own words

Although I have been clocked at typing 100 wpm (on an IBM Selectric, no less) I much prefer writing by hand. I use different colors and often draw ideas. My pet peeve is when people hold their writing instrument “incorrectly”. I know it’s a personal preference but kids today cannot write cursive because they never learned how to hold a pencil the right way. Frustrating.

When I took a class in grad school where I had no choice but to use a computer, I noticed that I really didn't pay much attention in class, so I didn't use a computer unless I had to for note taking.

I agree with all the reasons but especially #2 Using a smartphone or laptop you constantly want to check your email or maybe look up the definition of a word online and the next thing u know you’re watching dog videos Paper is much less distracting and also more accessible

Given how badly many people grip their pens, sometimes I wonder what's good to recommend, handwriting or typing. I sometimes cringe when I see the grips of many people, thinking about the cramps and ultimately the injuries (hopefully not) in the future.

How does the tombow pencil hold up for lefties? I hold my hand level with the text and would therefore brush it as I write. Would I smear it a lot?

I would love to write more by hand, but my grip is terrible and I cannot do a proper tripod grip. I end up holding the pen or pencil with my thumb and middle finger only... while my index finder is stretched out and does nothing! 🙈💦

I always think writing is very soothing to do so I just write everyday, but I really need to improve my penmanship.

I have more reasons why people generally write better on paper than on the computer, or anywhere else. Your computer will stop working , or there is something in your computer a virus or whatever and you lose what you typed. On the sheet of your paper you can read it through and improve what you want to type and think about, but it is sometimes true that you may have to print it right away or have a copy made with the copier , so I prefer writing 🖋️ Even though my hands will hurt

I prefer writing by hand. ✍🏾 I keep a journal that I write in everyday. If nothing happened, I say nothing happened. It’s so calming.

Could writing on an iPad be a good strategy? As you are still 'hand writing' it and it's saved to the cloud for better storage.

Haha, even if it was, why would JetPens say "yes"? You must realize that even though the reasons they list for writing by hand are valid, this is essentially one long commercial meant to persuade you to buy pens/pencils. By the way, I don't see how a cloud is actually better storage because such services may fail or be hacked. Digital storage is definitely vulnerable. Unless your home is set ablaze or you don't know to keep liquids at a distance (permanent inks are available, though), whatever you write down on paper is fairly safe.

There have been multiple studies showing that students retain new info better when they read it from paper rather than a backlit screen, which is what almost everything electronic is. So the answer to your question is no, not completely.
