When you went underwater it reminded me of the line from futurama where their ship is getting dragged to the bottom of the ocean "How many atmospheres can she take?" "Well she's a space ship... so anywhere from 1 to zero..."

I admire the Dev's decision to have the dialog in a constructed language. I know that there are some people it will annoy, but personally I love it. I wish we had more of that in the Fantasy and Sci-Fi space. It is the detail in worldbuilding that almost always gets glossed over, but it can do so much to sell the culture, the history, and how the people view the world around them. It's one of the things, alongside the architecture and cinematography that Splat mentioned at the end, that really tell me that the people working on this actually care about the setting they're trying to sell us on.

Sounds a bit like Creole, to me. There are definite linguistic cognates with English in the vocabulary, as might be expected with a Latin-derived patois. =0[.]o= ETA: ...At least the first bits of dialog. The character of the language seems to change starting with the farewell. =0[.]o=

"This is like one of those Akalabeth universes where you can either get a horse, or a spaceship at the local blacksmith..." to be honest, I think in the far-flung future, that's a lot more likely a scenario than we may think.

As I watched this beautiful demo of a stylish, creative game that's an obvious labor of love for everyone involved, and the rocket ascended into the unknown, all I could think was, "What, no gravity turn?" Sucks being a nerd sometimes.
@krdxz

I'm no expert, but I'm guessing the turn is needed if you are trying to orbit. If you wanted to fly out to space I suppose you could just fly out straight.
@todorus
@todorus Жыл бұрын
@@krdxz I have enough hours into KSP to know that that is an EXTREMELY inefficient way to do things. Not to mention the amount of control you would need to start an interplanetary burn when you need to account for atmospheric drag and winds.
@krdxz
@krdxz Жыл бұрын
@@todorus I think you are right. Key here might also be planet's rotation, which I believe is being used to help "fling" spacecraft into space. If you just fly straight up not only you are not taking advantage of rotation, but also have to counter for it.

It is intriguing for sure. But I'm not sure what will be the game like... Are there gonna be decisions to make in the walking/talking stages? Or is the story linear? Will we be able to fly the ship anywhere on an entire world? From the demo, it looks like a ship driving phase followed by a little narrative phase. The visuals sure look astounding, can't deny that, and the story is certainly ominous and captivating, but I'm worried about what the gameplay loop will be like.

lighting, fog n wave fx without much else going on. Looks more like an engine show-reel than a game so depends on igf anything else ever shows up or if it's purely a "float over the ocean" affair or more like "Desert Strike" where you are engaging with the locals, no weapons in the demo so I suspect some form of walking-sim via skimmer/vtol/hovercraft

I wouldn't call this a demo to be fair. It's a presentation of the stage the game is setting you up to with some light interactivity on the piloting the ship to the destination part. I did like what I saw, it was pretty high quallity but actual gameplay and mechanics is what is important to show to people.

I was kind of hoping that "scramjet" wasn't just a name they picked because it sounded cool, but ah well. Ramjets and scramjets are really neat and kind of sci-fi-ish, but even a sci-fi scramjet wouldn't be a scramjet if it worked from a standstill. A scramjet only ignites and produces thrust if you're already going at supersonic speeds when you try to start it, so it doesn't really fit the game mechanic.
@nazaxprime
@nazaxprime Жыл бұрын
As an aviation specialist that has worked on structures, powerplants and everything in-between, you could totally get it started from a standstill assuming you could initiate the compression cycle and endure the transition from 0 thrust to whatever amount you will apply to the frame. I get your point, but yeah, it's my niche. I literally inspected the F-14 on on it's sunset cruise, along with the rest of the fleet, so...👍👍 Mind you, I will give you points for feeding the intake with the volume it would need to maintain compression, and also mention the complexity of transitioning from different atmosphereic densities, but that's a tale for another time... Perhaps about when we get to the part where we operate it in different liquid mixtures. 😂

@@nazaxprime nice! you do kind of sound like a dick flexing on this guy when he wasnt questioning your credentials - but speaking as another person with far too many letters after my name i bet you dialed it back a bit with the edit hahaha - i totally get that annoyance when you see armchair experts regurgitating a popculture + 1 level of technical knowledge as if they wrote the book. so flex on! - i bet thats been a cool ass career, but maybe not - I actually hate mine now. Ive learned so much about things i dont really give a shit about and pushed the sum total of human knowledge a little further on molecular interactions at the atomic scale and how the physics of these can be exploited for supramolecular assembiles... but fuck me as i look at half my lifes work does it bore me to tears now. Perhaps its the same for you. Perhaps like for molecules to me the fast jets have lost their luster, the turbines have ceased to glisten and the only joy this knowledge gives you now is the ability to shit on people who think they could get to the moon cos they played enough kerbal space program to explain what delta V is to their disinterested family at thanksgiving.
@nazaxprime
@nazaxprime Жыл бұрын
@@DrunkenWizardBattle Nah, not flexing, friend, just sharing and trying to add a little to the conversation since he seemed to like the tech and sometimes people take interest in the whole F14 thing. If I was gonna flex I'd have mentioned being an industrial radiographer or heavy haul trucker. XD I think my edit was adding I bit about atmospherics. I get the booted to tears thing though, most of these things that sound cool come with so much baggage they're hardly worth it. Ind I can't flex too hard as a trucker, I've only enough miles under me to make it a bit farther than the moon. 😂 That, and not much impresses me anymore, so I don't really even think to flex. In fact, the only thing that impresses me anymore is passion. If you have that, then we have something to talk about. For me, that means creative design, and any armchair QB can swing that club, so, I guess that makes me a man of the people. 😀

@@nazaxprime I was wondering about the term scramjet as well, but that's neat that there is a real-life version that could work. 5:56 When examining a spaceship for purchase, don't kick the thrusters or slam the hatches. 25:00 The thing about real physics is the realities of space travel are rather depressing. Read sci-fi that takes time dilation and the lightspeed barrier into account, like Arthur Clarke's 'The Songs of Distant Earth' or Joe Haldeman's 'The Forever War'. They illustrate the fact that pretty much every interstellar voyage, even if we come up with fantastic power sources to drive them, will by definition be a one-way trip, because even if you return, you will know nobody and practically nothing about your home will even be recognizable. One of my lines from a play I was in comes to mind: "I didn't go to the moon. I went much further, for time is the longest distance between two places."
