The pay breakdown does not add up; for ex, making 80 hrs monthly with two weeks off, even with per diem is measly. . The only people i see working this are married ones with extra income coming from their spouse. . It will take about 3+ years, from what ive read, before you start making decent money.

@@JettingJulia If the airline you working for is struggling and not profitable. It's understandable that employees sacrifice and work on the clock at times for free. If the airline is doing very well and has a Billion dollars profit in the bank after playing the bill for the stock holders , employees, equipment and advertising. Then they can and should treat their employees better. With some kind of fair and reasonable compensation. When you're on company property in uniform punch in on the clock at your work station. Or a 1to 4 hour delay and then a flight cancellation. They could offer free or discounted air flights, food, hotel stays or just a lower paid scale for those times. The TEAMSTERS in Chicago IL can give you advice on what is responsible and what's not.

The airline does pay, in a sense. The hourly rate is meant to compensate the flight attendant for all time expended. So if a flight attendant's hourly rate is $40 - it really isn't as you can expect to be on duty around twice the amount of flight hours - so the flight attendant's REAL hourly rate is around $20.

Interesting, especially about the luggage into the overhead bins. Considering the number of people inside those flying tubes and the abusive customers you have to tolerate flight attendants are for the most part great. I witnessed a guy be very rude to a young flight attendant, he was totally out of order. When she got to me and my wife l said not to listen to guys like him and that she was doing a great job. I also told her that her perfume was really lovely too. Unless in business or first class the space is tight. Choose to be nice, get to know your seat neighbour and either chat or respect that they just want to be left alone. My wife and l always have good flights because we make them good by engaging the cabin crew and treating others nicely.

Yeah we F/A's get abused at times, but the passengers that treat us respectful and offer help, at times get "rewarded". I'll slip a free meal, or first class dessert their way, or if they like, maybe a bottle of First Class wine "doggy bag" . Of course it's done hush hush usually in the aft galley, so as to not play favorites in front of the other passengers. I am sure Julia knows some of the tricks. 😉

Hey so what ever you don don’t do cruise lines now I only can say for carnival you don’t make as much and you are gone for months you have to sign a contract so if your single then you may like it but usually it’s like 4-7 months away at sea. Now flight attendants at first will not make that much and it’s a Seniority company so the longer you’re there the better you’re going to get paid and get the better hours in lines however starting out you’re probably going to make less than what you currently make. But in the long run flight attendants make very good and in most cases pay more than what teachers make sometimes double

Super informative video! Thanks for providing such useful info to the public. Regarding being gally on international, it's quite easy once you do it a few times. Just like most things in life, the more practice you have, the less stressful the routine becomes, and you get better at it the more you do it. Yes, you do earn the extra money as it requires organization, good timing, and planning (or else the service goes to hell in a handbasket lol). It has always irked me that FAs don't get paid for handling boarding. I have seen them, especially in First/Business Class, rush about the cabin serving pre-departure drinks and "making nice" with the passengers. Some of them truly go out of their way to make the passengers feel welcome and special in their cabin. All of this is taking place as other passengers shuffle through the cabin and often ask the FAs questions as they are trying to get their passengers settled in for the flight. Whew! That makes me tired just explaining it! LOL! It impresses me that most FAs seem to do this in a good and friendly way when I am quite aware that they are not being PAID to perform this service. Talk about dedication to their jobs! So, hats off to these incredible people. You are appreciated by some of us! Take care and Happy Travels! ♥️🛫🌐

You are covered by workers comp regardless of whether the door is closed. You would be entitled to workers comp if you tripped in the jetway. In the late 90s, a long month was 85 hours. Now, I have friends that are still flying and fly 100-110 hours a month. There are also many incentive rates like for Purser, holiday or night pay. Like you, I tried to fly Lead or Purser as much as possible. I also went to DU (Our ala mater) Law School while flying.

Aloha Julia I just subscribed to your channel, and love your attitude. I have been a F/A for 35 years for a competitor airline. Like to see your informative videos, and of course pay is often asked about, and also thought as a "low paying" career. To those curious about trying to work for a airline, the majors usually are the way to go for the money. As you well know Julia, some hard core F/A's with seniority can make $150 k flying international. It can actually add up more when considering per diem, night pay, galley pay, Purser pay, international pay, 401k match, langiage pay, profit sharing, incentive override pay..etc...it can add up. As you can see my pic here, is Waikiki Beach taken on a layover, and was my base back in the mid 80's to mid 90's. Keep up the great videos and stay safe, especially during this virus outbreak. 🤙

First, Flight Attendants need a stronger union. Training with no compensation is unjust. Obviously that must not have had any Wage and Hour complaints. Second, does the money you earn for extra hours figure into your retirement compensation?
@JettingJulia

Certain airlines pay for training while others don’t, but I agree all training (no matter the profession) should be training. & yes any extra hours we pick up go towards our retirement as well! ☺️ thank you for watching!

I'd never work any job for such low pay, esp. when you factor in all the "extra" hours flight attendants spend traveling to/from the airport, packing/unpacking, checking into hotels, adjusting to unfamiliar cities, dealing with strangers, etc.

Wow, so from your chart, the top pay is about $73/hr.. so if an FA works 8 hrs flight a day, Mon to Friday (5 days), meaning a normal 40 hours a week like many people, that means their pay in a year is about $73 x 40 hours in a week x 52 weeks in a year = $150k? Nice.

Hi Julia, I flew for UA for 24 years (retired in 2000). I've never heard of not getting worker's comp during a boarding injury?? Is that just your airline or maybe something after my time?? I do know they will do anything to get out of paying you! 😒 I injured my back with a pax carry-on during boarding and was paid. I loved flying galley because a 14.5-hour flight, say from SEA to HKG, would fly by - no pun intended. Stay safe out there!✈🙏

Actually Stephen. When I got hired our oldest which we called her "mom" in training was 42 at the time. That was in 1984. So I could easily be called "Dad" and I still fly. Actually a lot of Airlines like to hire experienced "older" people, especially x military and nurses with bubbly personalities. Also the airlines know you won't be around long enough to reach top out pay, if say you start in mid 50 range. Food for thought!

What a beautiful flight attendant, I wish we could choose the flight attendant when booking a flight! The pay is ridiculous, should work only for a couple of years so you can get to travel for free, get to know many places and then move on to a better career, not to mention the risks, the toll it takes on your health.

This is very interesting! Thank you for sharing! I am curious about your home base airport. Let’s say you fly for Delta, can you pick your main airport location? Like for example, if you lived in Dallas, can you make the Dallas airport where you always start and end flights or is it more like a real job where if you were hired to be a flight attendant in Austin, you have to move to that particular city? Does that question make sense?
@kimchow662

I don't fly often. I enjoy your vlog on the airline industry and you come across as sincere and genuine. My only question is when I am flying coach, why is it that I feel like it is such a burden to ask for a refill on my refreshment (i.e., sprite or gingerale). I often get this look from flight attendents like I am annoying them. To me, I hate it when the mainline flight attendent, fills my plastic glass full of ice, and then gives me only a 1/3 of the sprite and never gives me the leftover in the can. This is all about $$$ I am guessing, right? I also have heard sprite takes forever to pour and annoys flight attendents because they have to get to everyone. I hate getting the nasty stares and having to push the call button for a refill. Of coarse, everyone is going to argue, well we are here for your safety first. Well, yes and no. I know some are, but others are simply collecting a paycheck. My point is that the customers should not be discouraged or frowned on for asking for more, so I rarely ask for seconds unless the flight attendent comes back through and ask me if I need a refill. To me, this is one of the most annoying things when I fly. If you want to be cheap, then simply don't bother with the service and charge for the so called complimentary refreshments. Would love to hear your thoughts on this as it varies from which FA you speak with and on which mainline carrier.

I would be worried about the spur of the moment trips, the extremely high expectations of the corporate passengers and the relative insecurity of the job. I have a good friend who works as a corporate FA and have heard horror stories about basically being on call 24/7. It may be an exciting job if you are young, energetic and aren't in a serious relationship with someone. As in every job, there are pros and cons about it. It really depends on what your desires and goals are.
