Chris Rupp made the arrangement for this song. The judges were so impressed by his jazzy arrangement they complimented him for it off-screen. That made me so happy to hear because (like you) I felt so bad for Chris and the lack of compliments he got (on air).

Chris Rupp says that all of them were rather smitten with Jewel, but the contestants and judges were kept well apart. I'm a bit hazy on the timeline, but around this time Home Free hired a beautiful stylist. She and Austin fell very heavily for one another and were together for 5 years. Certainly they were together by the time the SingOff was shown on TV (some time after recording). I wish it could be arranged for the judges to make a video discussing how the band has progressed.

Jewel put the country in her voice with the little breaks in her voice just like # HOMEFREE. You were right Jillian. You are definitely getting the country ear. It’s not all accents. But the way you let your voice sorta like a yodel and your voice have breaks it them it’s harder to do than you think. I don’t mean the people who act stupid and try the fake country sound. J&J it's been a blast watching these Sing Off videos through your eyes! I watched with my daughter (who was a tween then) 10 years ago and we both fell in love with #HomeFree and have been following them since. I was about to ask Jeremy why she was doing all that cupping of the mike, when he asked the same thing. 😮. That was beautiful and HomeFree were perfect, and Jewel sounded great! I didn’t hear the country either, just beautiful music. ❤️🎶

Jewel has such a beautiful voice. She makes some interesting stylistic choices in both her singing and her hand and arm movements. I think that cupping the microphone was just part of that. Great reaction as always.

Yeah, the cupping thing surprised me because she’s pretty knowledgeable, and I would think that she’d not want to cause any “proximity effect” on her vocals, which is what happens when you cup the mic. It’s brings out a ton of low end, and can make the vocals quite muffled and distorted sometimes. So that’s why I was surprised she’d do that. But either way, I love her. She’s absolutely amazing, and I’ve been a fan of her’s since around 1997ish. I remember buying her first cd for my sister because I liked it so much. ☺️
