In 1996 at age 24 I left a bad marriage with a newborn, a toddler, and no job. It was the scariest thing I ever did. Jewel (and Alanis) helped me be brave. I just love her!

Foolish Games still brings watery eyes for me. Her voice is so expressive. Thanks for this reaction, Saeed.

This song resonates with Jewel, she speaks from "experience", as she started out her "career" homeless (living in her van) and sang at nightclubs and bars to "pay her bills' and she hung around with the hookers she met and talked with on the streets and nightclubs. It was Neil Young that gave Jewel "that huge break" and "offered" Jewel his big music studio so she could 'record her first album "Pieces of you"..

This is the song that put her in the limelight, and she's still going strong. She was one of the judges on the acapella talent show called The SingOff, when Home Free won. It's also where Pentatonix got their start and won the year prior to Home Free. Jewel is a ( pardon the pun) jewel. Great reaction, my friend😊

you need to see her perform this at Woodstock (1999) featuring her incredible talent and range; scat, yodeling, incredible call and response with electric guitar player. It is remarkable to watch.
@Marnie-hates-winterАй бұрын
I would love to have him react to that in future. I'm the one who requested this one. I thought about requesting the Woodstock version, but then I was thinking that a lot of times, in the live version, if they really stylize it, it will be appreciated most by people who already know the song. If you've never heard a song before, a super-stylized live version of it won't be the best thing to listen to first. That's something to listen to after you already love the song. Maybe I'll request the Woodstock version at some point in the future. I agree, it's really great.

I used to watch her family's tv show Alaska the last frontier for many years. She has a song about her father and grandparents etc and the life they build in Alaska after they came there from Switzerland many years ago. The song is called Fathers daughter, she actually sings it with Dolly Parton the one and only.

Incredible, isn't she? In the 90s she was among the handful of women that made pop music relevant for me again, after I'd put it behind me in disgust in the late 80s. She wrote beautiful and impactful songs, and what an incredible performer she was!

Her debut album was awesome. I was working for a theatre when it came out. She sold out the place in a day. Circa summer 1996 or so. She decided to have her father open the show with yodeling. The fans were not happy. She actually came out and yelled at the crowd.

She has been one of my all-time favourites since her debut 😊. So many of her songs (lyrics and emotive voicing) have left me emotional, even in tears. That entire album was amazing. Others have suggested you check out 'Foolish Games,' 'You Were Meant For Me', 'Standing Still', and 'Hands': I'd also like to add 'Morning Song' because not only is it beautiful but I know that you will get the references; as well as "Near You Always," and finally "Don't"... the emotion is palpable, the impact visceral.

I love Jewel, she has angelic vocals..I lived in Alaska from 82-85, my best friend there was her first cousin. She was way younger than us though. But in 85 I went to Homer to see Al, all the photos I took that weekend were the same views as the Kilcher family's land, so I think that is where Al took us to. I know my ex got to meet them, but she was really young. Wait til you hear her yodel. Love her music. Thanks. Took Al to his first concert lol seen Nazareth. He raced 3-wheelers and we spent alot of time together at the motocross track. Sure miss those days.

As far as I remember she learned four chords on guitar and wrote this song. She hit big with her debut album but it didn't really seem to happen after that. I always think of Tori Amos as well, because they have the same flexibility with their vocals where you feel they could take the performance in any direction they wanted from one moment to the next. Somebody else recommended her Woodstock performance of this song. I will echo that.
