Before Gord died, the Hip went on one last tour, while Gord was still able to. The final night, in their hometown, really was the final night. It was broadcast coast to coast, by the CBC. We had a collective sob.

Canada's house band. The Hip as we call them. David Milgaard was from my hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba. I do remember when all this happened. Gord Downie was a poet and an amazing front man. Unfortunately he passed from the same form of brain cancer as Neil Peart from Rush. Unlike Neil though he wanted to do one last tour before passing. He had to relearn all the songs as the cancer had taken his memory. Their last concert was televised across Canada commercial free. A third of Canada including myself watched that concert.

The Tragically Hip fuses folk with blues with rock. Lead singer Gord Downie was an amazing song writer , poet , story teller , front man , live performer and humanitarian. Hope to see more Hip reactions. “It’s a Good Life if You Don’t Weaken” is a personal favourite.

I live in the city the terrible incident occurred in many years ago, Saskatoon, SK (the Paris of the Prairies). Incidentally, the hometown of Joni Mitchell as well. Such a heartbreaking story, and Gord Downie spent his entire life speaking to the injustices of people who often did not have a voice. Wheat Kings is one of the most beautiful songs, yet for Canadians this sad story is ingrained in our collective conscience, particularly here. Amazing reaction as always.

Next up Hurricane by Bob Dylan, where a former Championship Level Boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter was set up by the Patterson New Jersey Police for a murder he did not commit . 3 Canadian Students found out about it, moved to Patterson, were harassed on a daily basis, but never stopped, leading the charge until he was freed years later. Rubin moved to Canada and helped an organization to free innocent victims.

I'm really enjoying and appreciating your reactions. Congrats, you've discovered The Hip😁, a tremendous source of Canadian pride. Amazingly talented group, and their lead singer & dramatic frontman Gord Downie was our beloved, endlessly-talented national songwriter-poet ☺. As a writer and poet myself, I was immediately fascinated and seduced by Gord's haunting and insightful lyrics, his unique phrasing, and his adept story-telling; I'm sure you'd appreciate his work as well! Suggestions: Nautical Disaster, So Hard Done By, Poets, New Orleans is Sinking, Locked in the Trunk of a Car, Blow at High Dough, Ahead by a Century, Bobcaygeon, Gift Shop, etc.

If you are interested in another similar song, I would highly recommend Hurricane by Bob Dylan. Truly another masterpiece by Dylan. You may already know the true story, Denzel Washington won the Oscar for playing Rubin Hurricane Carter in the movie Hurricane. The balance between "the abstract and vagueness and the specific and the performance", beautifully said Saeed. Gord's gift for doing this I think is at its peak with this song and Fiddler's Green. Fiddle's Green is a heart-wrenching song about the death of his sister's infant son. It is full of nautical metaphor and incredible acoustic licks from Rob Baker A song they would rarely perform live so as not to appear to be benefiting from other's grief. But near the end of Gord's life they performed it regularly, acknowledging how cathartic the song was for others (even though Gord, a true word smith, had something against the word catharsis and would say so rhyming it with My-arsse-is).
