@@FallNorth She caressed my earlobes and told me how nice they were when I saw her at Insomnia coffee house in 1995. I think it was 1995, anyway, it was right before she went out on tour supporting Peter Murphy because she had to cut the "Coffeehouse Residency" tour short to do that tour. She was amazing in those tiny venues. I had met her when I was working at the record store in the City Center mall at the end of 1994, Waves Music. I stopped working there in the fall of 1995, at a different location with far less foot traffic from famous musicians (like Steve Perry from Journey).

Once in a while the industry gets ahold of someone who still writes their own music and sings from their heart. And they exploit them and do what the industry does. And, once in a while, its someone like Jewel, whose voice and artistic expression is so strong free and real that it will still allways shine through all that they are pushed through. Dont be supressed, let your creativity smash through those that try and change it! And, thanks Jewel, its a gift to us all!

Auto-tune wasn't invented in 1995. And she had a co-writer on this song. Lip syncing isn't an indicator of talent, but more of production aesthetic in a live performance. As a side note, metronomes WERE around in '95...

+Jason Vanhoy you can speak all the bullshit you want but if you gloss over this woman you are a blind fool!!!
@shotgun2a8 жыл бұрын
MusicHeartofMine2012 Who's glossing over? I'm a huge Jewell fan, I bought this record as soon as it dropped. My point was that the melodramatic, emotional way some people talk about music is ridiculous. Usually it's people who couldn't point out the Antares gear if they were IN a studio, who really just want to say "hey, I really like this person's work"; but, instead they have to go off on some rant about things they have little experience with to somehow justify what is already a perfectly valid opinion. Which music you like is always valid because it's your choice. Saying something is universally "good" because it does or does not use some particular technology or production methodology is ignorant. What if plate reverb was a new thing, would OP be all up in arms because of the fakeness of it and only like "real" music that was really recorded in a huge physical space? No. Likely he wouldn't know a plate reverb from a plate reverb plugin from a large hall reverb from a large hall reverb plugin. Bottom line: calling one person a "real artist" and another person not a "real artist" because of the tools they use is a completely masturbatory exercise with no redeeming value whatsoever.

I couldn't agree more. Watching a true musical craftsman getting into it, eyes wandering but not really looking at anything, owning the audience with their performance, draws in such a positive ambiance that its physically and emotionally attractive. This is a good genuine performance by a professional and she's just a kid.

The record label must have freaked out when they found her. You don't expect someone who looks like this to put out music like this. It's a record label's fantasy! She can appeal to little kids and older, more cynical music lovers simultaneously. Very rare and unusual quality.

They busted their ass to get her out there, too. It wasn't easy. The thing that got her out there was her role as Dorothy in a TV version of The Wizard of Oz. Before that, she was still kicking it around in smaller gigs, though she had gotten to open on some decent theater tours like Peter Murphy.
