Jewellery Tutorial | Marquise Diamond Engagement Ring

In this video I go through how I approached this marquise 3 stone ring. In platinum - GLORIOUS PLATINUM - this was such a cool ring to make. This will give you a general idea how to approach a ring like this (one of the ways to approach it).

Marquise shapes have such strong direction. I’m actually a big fan of the shape. I’m doing a set of earrings at the moment with 20 diamonds and having such fun pointing them in all different directions.

Great job as always. One thing I would change from the desing standpoit it to make the shank thinner near the stones. But if the customer like it the way it is then its perfect :)

Thanks Marek, yep, the customer wanted the shank to be chunky and even had an existing ring which had diamonds down the sides as an example. Got to keep ‘em happy 😁

Gorgeous ring! What is the gauge of the metal you use for the boat under the marquis? I love this method as I have only burred the boat out of metal and this looks much cleaner and smarter! Thank you for sharing your experience and talent! I look forward to watching every week.

Thank you and you are so welcome. The thickness on the plate for this is usually around 0.8 mm in my workshop, but of course it’s a personal thing so experiment and see what works for you.

sawing almost all the way through and then pressing the collet together is such a clever alternative to using a plate and punch! you do this on both sides of the collet, correct? i'm definitely trying your method of laying 2 strips on top of one another to make the basic shape, so far i've just done it by sawing into the strip and bending it gradually until the ends meet, but your method looks like it's way faster and smarter :) such an amazing piece, and that diamond, well, daaamn! :D

Hey Alisa, yep, both sides always. I use it for accuracy. The blade will create the same distance every time. This way it tapers real slow so I can get to exactly where I’d like to be.

What size (in millimeters) were the stones you used for this ring? I'm trying to figure out what stones to buy but don't really have a reference as to size.

That's such a stellar piece! I do have a question though. How do you solder a piece together, without melting off the other joints you've previously made?

Thanks for the compliment. I control all that by using the hardest solder, or in platinum starting with fusing the metal, and working my way down to medium. It has a lot to do with the heat regulation. Be careful to over heat - this is where you might find the previous solder melts again. Hope that helps.

@@jacothejeweller thank you so much! I am the most literal amateur when it comes to jewelry making, and I have this issue working with silver. Is there a brand of solder that you would recommend?

@@casulscrub5978 I would just recommend getting hard, medium and easy solder. Can’t recommend a specific brand but I’ve used loads of different suppliers and they all work well so it shouldn’t matter. Just keep going and practice. You will soon master it 👍🏻

I have a stone set in the same way, and my stone keeps coming loose. Is there anything that my jeweler can do to fix this?

@@collegebiologygirl12 this setting would be more prone to movement than one with more claws. I would visit your jeweller and ask for help. The claws can be tightened to secure the stone again and you might want to consider adding a few extra wire claws if this continues.

Thank you for your help! They added side prongs and it seems to be more sturdy.
